Bonus Round 1: AUs

AUs

This round is CLOSED as of 7PM EDT on 10 June. Late comments are screened and will not receive points.

This popular round is back once again! To begin this year's SASO, we encourage you to let your mind run wild with alternate ideas and settings.

Please read this whole post before commenting to ensure that your team gets the most points possible. (There are changes from last year!)

RULES
  • Submit prompts by commenting to this post with an alternate universe idea, along with a ship from one of our nominated fandoms. There's a comment template below for your convenience.
    • Your prompt MUST include some kind of relationship. (This is not the sports anime gen olympics.) Platonic relationships are indicated by an "&" between the names (e.g., Izumi & Sakaeguchi). Non-platonic relationships use "/" (e.g., Izumi/Sakaeguchi). Please don't say "Any pairing," either!
  • An AU can be a canon divergence, e.g. "what if [character] was the Team Captain instead of the canon captain character?", or a completely different setting altogether, e.g., pop idol AU, coffee shop AU, superheroes AU, etc.
  • Fill prompts by leaving a responding comment to the prompt with your newly-created work.
  • Remember to follow the general bonus round rules, outlined here.

For fills:
First 4 fills by any member of your team: 20 points each

Sorry, Ryouma.

I tried to keep the matches the same except for switching out Ryouma, but I did have to cheat a little bit for Hyoutei, because let's be honest, if Momo had still replaced Oishi in this AU, then the final match of Hyoutei would have been Hiyoshi vs. one of the Ichinen, and Seigaku would have lost (and then not faced Rikkai, and I really wanted to include the Rikkai match here).

***

Ryouma feels his racket shatter, but he can't react quickly enough, and the sharp edge of the broken piece rakes across his eyes. The pain is nearly all-consuming, drowning out everything but the wetness running over his fingers. He thinks he's going to be sick.

Oishi is the first one onto the court. He's seen his fair share of injuries over the years; they all have, but this looks worse than the usual. There's already a curling knot of fear in his gut as he signals to Tezuka, and his captain doesn't hesitate before forfeiting the match.

Oishi goes to the hospital with Ryouma, but he doesn't get any updates until after Tezuka has wan his match and joined him along with the rest of the team. The news is as bad as Oishi had feared; Ryouma has lost one eye entirely, and most of his sight from the other.

Ryouma is still in the hospital when Seigaku faces St. Rudolph. The Ichinen come to visit him after the match and tell him about how their lefty captain had defeated Lefty-Killer Yuuta, but all they can think about is how it should have been Ryouma on the court facing Yuuta in a battle between the first-year prodigies.

Ryouma misses the match against Yamabuki as well, but he's back on the sidelines when Seigaku faces Hyoutei. Sitting next to him, Tezuka sees how he flinches at every strike of the ball. Ryouma hasn't been on the team for long, but it's obvious how much of a fixture he has become.

Oishi hurts his wrist before the match, but he pushes Tezuka to let him play anyway; they can all feel how thin their roster is. Eiji covers for Oishi's weaknesses, and they win, but Tezuka isn't so lucky. He's playing Atobe when his shoulder finally gives out. He can't afford himself the luxury of withdrawing. Seigaku has already lost one pillar; they can't afford to lose the other.

Sheer will isn't enough though, and Momo has to take up the mantle. He feels the pressure as he steps onto the court. He has to win if Seigaku is going to make it to Nationals, but that's not what's motivating him.

"Remember, Echizen?" he wants to say. "Remember all the times we've played together?" He hopes he says it with his tennis.

He scrapes by with a win somehow, and making it to Nationals should have been a cause for celebration, but no one's heart is in it. Inui takes copious notes before their next game. Ryouma continues to come sit in on practices, but he doesn't seem to be enjoying it, and his dejection is casting a pall over everyone else. Tezuka's absence doesn't help either. Oishi is struggling to fill Tezuka's shoes, and he's too stressed to be open to advice, so Inui does the only other thing he can think of: he brings his notes to Seigaku's future captain. The team is hanging together by a thread, and he hopes Kaidou can help. If not, he hopes his notes will at least serve Kaidou well in the future.

Seigaku is starting to come back together by the time Fuji steps onto the court to face Akaya. They're still shaky, but they're shaky as a team. But that doesn't change the fact that they've already lost two matches. He can't afford to lose here.

He's feeling fairly confident, and then a ball hits him in the head.

Everything is dark.

He wonders if this is how Ryouma felt back when they played against Fudoumine.

He wonders if this is fear Ryouma has mentioned in whispers when he hangs back after practice.

"I can't see," he whispers. He means the words for his ears only, but the sharp gasp from the bench says Ryouma has heard them too.

He tunes out the hyperventilating happening behind him, trusting Momo to calm Ryouma down, and focuses on controlling his own breathing before he ends up the same. There will be time enough to feel guilty later. For now, he has a match to win. For Seigaku. For Tezuka.

He wins. His sight returns. Ryouma's doesn't. He thinks, researches, and plans.

A few weeks later, he presses a tennis ball into Ryouma's hand. It's softer than a normal one, and it rattles as it moves.

"You said tennis is fun, right?" he asks. "Come play again."

...The ending killed me. I can't believe you found a way to make it hopeful! Like I was just after standard issue angst but THIS. Such a good piece of thinking/research, such an awesome inspirational message about not being ableist about who can play and who can't.

I'm so glad that Tezuka had the sense to forfeit Ryoma's match vs Ibu. The way you detail all the following matches is just amazing attention to detail and canon. It all unfolds so very believably and logically.

Momo wanting to talk with his tennis is adorbs but 'Seigaku has already lost one pillar; they can't afford to lose the other' HURT MY HEART SO MUCH. Why, Yrin. Why.

Also Akaya hitting Fuji in the head with a tennis ball so that Fuji empathizes with Ryoma, I can't stop laughing. I know it's serious but KIRIHARA. XDD Somehow him hurting people always makes me grin.

Really, really love this! Especially the ending. It's just so GOOD and strong. Perfectly put together, awesome ensemble characterization, fantastic closeness to canon while definitely being an AU. Thank you tons for doing such a beautiful fill!

BECAUSE TEZUKA HURTS. Tezuka hurts, Hyoutei hurts, and Tennis in general makes your heart hurt.

Thank you for the lovely comment, and I'm glad you enjoyed it! I really wanted to show Seigaku and Ryouma struggling to come to terms with his injury, but I also absolutely didn't want that to turn him into a doorstop. Adaptive tennis for the visually impaired actually originated in Japan, which is what Fuji is alluding to at the end (if you're interested here's a video; the first two rallies are between two fully blind players, the third between two partially sighted players). Thanks for giving me this prompt to play with.
