Bonus Round 1: AUs

AUs

This round is CLOSED as of 7PM EDT on 10 June. Late comments are screened and will not receive points.

This popular round is back once again! To begin this year's SASO, we encourage you to let your mind run wild with alternate ideas and settings.

Please read this whole post before commenting to ensure that your team gets the most points possible. (There are changes from last year!)

RULES
  • Submit prompts by commenting to this post with an alternate universe idea, along with a ship from one of our nominated fandoms. There's a comment template below for your convenience.
    • Your prompt MUST include some kind of relationship. (This is not the sports anime gen olympics.) Platonic relationships are indicated by an "&" between the names (e.g., Izumi & Sakaeguchi). Non-platonic relationships use "/" (e.g., Izumi/Sakaeguchi). Please don't say "Any pairing," either!
  • An AU can be a canon divergence, e.g. "what if [character] was the Team Captain instead of the canon captain character?", or a completely different setting altogether, e.g., pop idol AU, coffee shop AU, superheroes AU, etc.
  • Fill prompts by leaving a responding comment to the prompt with your newly-created work.
  • Remember to follow the general bonus round rules, outlined here.

If you see anyone breaking the code of conduct (e.g., causing drama, being rude) anywhere (not just DW), please contact the mods immediately.

SCORING
These numbers apply to your team as a whole, not each individual teammate. Make as many prompts/fills as you want!

For prompts: 5 points each (maximum of 50 prompt points per team per round)

For fills:
First 4 fills by any member of your team: 20 points each
Fills 5-10: 15 points each
Fills 11-20: 5 points each
Fills 21-50: 2 points each
Fills 51+: 1 point each

All scored content must be created new for this round.

Etc.
If you're hunting through the prompts looking for what to fill, a good trick is to view top-level comments only (see the line of links below this post).

Have a question? Check The FAQ first. If you still need help, feel free to contact the mods. Happy fanworking!

No one is sure what determines who ends up with wings and who doesn't. There are almost as many competing theories as there are papers written on the subject, and Haru isn't sure he believes any of them. On bad days, he wonders if it's his own fault he has no wings. He wonders if he ruined them before they could even grow by slamming into the mats so many times in judo practice, or if he ruined them when he hurt his shoulder.

He tries not to let his jealousy show when he runs his hands over Kazu's wings. Kazu's wings are beautiful, wide and strong and covered in dark brown feathers brindled with gold. Haru loves running his hands over Kazu's wings and feeling the muscles tense under him.

But as strong as Kazu's wings are, they aren't strong enough to pick up a second person. They tried a few times once, but with Haru in his arms, Kazu couldn't generate enough lift to get off the ground. Haru tried not to show just how much it hurt, just like he tries not to show how much it hurts to see Kazu fly up over the railing to join him on the roof.

"Here," Kazu says, putting a flyer into his hands. "You should join."

"Cheerleading?" Haru asks.

"I think you'd enjoy it. I'm joining too."

Haru isn't convinced, but he joins for Kazu. Cheerleading seems to make Kazu happy, and Kazu's smiles have been rarer and rarer recently as his grandmother has declined.

Haru wasn't convinced, and he's even less convinced when they move on from the basics to acrobatics and formations. Cartwheels and even backflips were fine, but the first time someone suggests he should be a flyer, he swears his heart skips a beat.

He hates heights. Whenever he looks down, he's terrified he's about to go plummeting to his death, and that's just another painful reminder of his lack of wings. Heights wouldn't be so terrifying if he could fly.

Kazu is insistent though, and so Haru agrees to try despite his reservations.

It turns out Kazu is right, as he often is. It turns out it's different when Kazu is spotting him from below, when he trusts everyone who's supporting him as his base. The first time he jumps from the top of a pyramid, he wonders if this is what Kazu feels when he flies. He's never felt so free before.

That night when he runs his hands over Kazu's wings, he doesn't have to fight down the wave of jealousy. He knows what it feels like to fly too.
