Bonus Round 1: AUs

AUs

This round is CLOSED as of 7PM EDT on 10 June. Late comments are screened and will not receive points.

This popular round is back once again! To begin this year's SASO, we encourage you to let your mind run wild with alternate ideas and settings.

Please read this whole post before commenting to ensure that your team gets the most points possible. (There are changes from last year!)

RULES
  • Submit prompts by commenting to this post with an alternate universe idea, along with a ship from one of our nominated fandoms. There's a comment template below for your convenience.
    • Your prompt MUST include some kind of relationship. (This is not the sports anime gen olympics.) Platonic relationships are indicated by an "&" between the names (e.g., Izumi & Sakaeguchi). Non-platonic relationships use "/" (e.g., Izumi/Sakaeguchi). Please don't say "Any pairing," either!
  • An AU can be a canon divergence, e.g. "what if [character] was the Team Captain instead of the canon captain character?", or a completely different setting altogether, e.g., pop idol AU, coffee shop AU, superheroes AU, etc.
  • Fill prompts by leaving a responding comment to the prompt with your newly-created work.
  • Remember to follow the general bonus round rules, outlined here.

So! Fair bit of warning, this totally got away for me, and I'm kinda feeling I won't be able to have it even close to finished before the end of the round. I'm not entirely sure why I started trying to tell their entire life story but?? Here we are??? Hopefully at a later point I'll be able to fully tell the story I wanted to, spanning them falling in love, Rin having to go (ANGST ANGST ANGST)... There was even this whole like... subplot about Rin being separated from his mom and not consciously remembering his past and where he came from before he was sent to live with Haru. It was going to be a whole THING. But, hopefully bby Haru going from intense dislike of Rin to kind of not? disliking??? maybe?? will suffice haha.

***

Haru didn't see the point of Rin. He wasn't incapable of making friends, he just had no desire to. They were bothersome, bringing stress and trouble wherever they went. He didn't want them, and as far as his mother was concerned, that was the problem.

The boy -- Haru mentally scoffed at that. He was a robot, not a person -- was made to look about his age, and acted like most boys his age: irritatingly. He seemed bursting with energy, running to and fro and chatting Haru's ear off. "He'll be good for you," Haru's mom had said, patting his cheek, but the only thing he seemed good for was giving Haru headaches.

"Say, Nanase!" Rin chirped, leaning over his shoulder. No matter how often he tried to put distance between them, Rin seemed incapable of understanding the basic concept of personal space. His hair tickled Haru's cheek, and he leaned closer to his homework to escape it.

"We should do something. We've been stuck inside alllll daaaay!" Rin sprawled his upper body dramatically over the desk, crumpling a few papers and sending a pencil rolling to the ground. Haru glared at him, and turned away hoping for once ignoring Rin would make him go away.

Of course, it didn’t.

"Naanaaseeeeee..."

"What!?" Haru snapped. Rin grinned at him, and he swore it was smug. He could act as sweet as he liked, but he could push Haru’s buttons like no one else, and he knew it. He hummed, feigning thought (planning was a foreign concept to a bot who operated solely on explosive impulsives, and then jumped up as if an idea hit him.

“Let’s go to the pool! I know you like the pool!” He leaned close (of course he did) and gave Haru an exaggerated wink. Haru had to turn away, gritting his teeth and hating how easily swayed he was.

"Fine."

----

In the water, Haru was free. Free from responsibility. Free from trouble. Free from Rin. He surfaced and narrowed his eyes at the bot sitting a few feet from the pool, who waved as soon as he noticed the attention. It was weird that Rin suggested the pool.He usually liked to stick annoyingly close to Haru, and the pool was the one place he couldn’t follow. Bots were waterproof of course, but “prolonged exposure still posed a serious risk”, or so Rin's manual said. Haru had skimmed through it a few times hoping to find a way to shut him up, but there didn’t seem to be one. Annoying. Haru dived back into water to do a few laps.

He let his mind wander as he swam. It touched upon a few topics (feeling the water, the swim club he hadn’t joined, hopes to have fish for dinner that night) before landing back on Rin. Rin, Rin, Rin. He was like a disease, infecting every part of Haru’s life. Even his own mind wasn’t free of the bot. The longer he spent with him, the more it seemed like Rin would be there bugging Haru for the rest of his life, not just til his eighteenth birthday. It was a scary thought, and as if responding to it, Haru’s lungs began to protest.

Haru surfaced again, and when he looked, Rin was leaning over the edge of the pool watching him with wide, bright eyes.

"Rin, get back!" he yelled, surprising himself. Rin fell back, startled, and realizing where he was, scooted back further from the pool.

Haru sighed and pulled himself out of the water before grabbing his towel and heading to the lockers. When he exited, Rin was waiting for him, and he wasted no time in bothering him.

"You're so fast when you swim. It's amazing! You're just like whoosh, whoosh. Back and forth like it's air or something! Like you're a fish."

Haru hummed.

"You know, I used to swim."

"What? How," Haru said incredulously.

Rin's face went blank for a moment, then he just looked confused. "Huh. I don't know where that came from. I can't swim, can I?"

"No," Haru said firmly. "You need to stay away from the water. It's dangerous."

Rin was suspiciously quiet for a moment, then suddenly an arm was over his shoulder, and Rin was cooing at him. "Awwww were you worried about me?"

"I wasn't," Haru turned his head away.

"Liar! You were, weren't you!" Rin looked extremely pleased by that, and for some reason, Haru didn't shrug his arm off as they made their way home.

----

Haru wondered when he stopped seeing Rin as a nuisance. It wasn't as if Rin had stopped being one. He was loud as ever, energetic as ever, and still pushed himself into Haru's personal space like he belonged there. The worst part was that Haru was starting to feel like he did. He chanced a glance at Rin who was laying on his bed (his own since his parents had decided they'd grown too old to share), bobbing his head to whatever song he had stuck in his head. He was even humming along, but the broken, off-key sounds didn't resemble anything Haru had ever heard.

Rin met his gaze and smirked. If one thing had changed, it was that Rin had gotten even more smug. It was even worse since he'd beat Haru in their last race. Haru blamed it on Rin being an android and therefore having an "unfair advantage," but he knew he just wasn't that fast on land. Sometimes he wished Rin could swim so he could really show him a race. He had a feeling RIn would still be a challenge, and it was one he really wanted to take on.

Haru sighed and shut his book. "Come on. We should be helping with dinner."

Rin followed with no issue until they reached the hallway and he turned it into a race to the kitchen. It was just barely a tie, putting Haru in a sour mood that only worsened when he realized they were having steak for dinner. Rin on the other hand was bouncing.

"Yes! I love steak!" he cried, rushing to help out.

"You don't eat," Haru reminded him, grabbing a knife and starting to chop the carrots.

Rin's face blanked in the way it had a lot lately whenever he said something weird and... not bot-like. His smile was back a moment later as he waved Haru off, stammering some lie about just liking to prepare it.

Haru just hummed in response.

Bonus disjointed bits I got tired of trying to connect:

Haru’s first day of swim practice was a mess. First, Rin had insisted on coming even though Haru demanded that he didn’t. He spent the whole afternoon with a knot in his stomach, sure Rin was going to do something stupid and land himself in the water. As if sensing his inner turmoil, the water outright rejected Haru, landing him with one of the worst times after a kid named Tachibana. When they were lined up in order of times, the kid gave him a friendly smile and wave, which he pointedly ignored.
----
They ended up friends. Rin, of course, had had a meddling hand in things, taking it upon himself to “fufill his duty to help Haru make friends.” It wasn’t as bad as he thought it’d be. Makoto wasn’t pushy and loud like Rin, and he didn’t get fed up and annoyed with Haru like others did when he ignored them. He kept a respectful distance and made the times Haru refused to talk to him (most of the time), companionable silences.
----
Haru hadn't meant to kiss him.

They were at the Iwatobi High School pool, Rin laying by the edge with his head resting on his folded arms as Haru alternated between swimming laps and just enjoying the water. The swim club had ended a few minutes earlier, and as usual, Haru stayed back, promising Makoto to lock up before he left. Haru surfaced a lot closer to Rin than he'd meant too, and suddenly he was right there, his lips twisted in that dumb grin he always gave Haru, the setting sun behind him outlining him in gold.

Haru's body moved of its own accord, pushing him up to meet Rin's lips. They were soft, too soft for someone who wasn’t even human. Then, it was over, and Haru was pulling back to see a dumbstruck Rin.

OOOOOOOOOOMG THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR THIS FILL!!!! AND PLEASE DONT WORRY ABOUT GETTING CARRIED AWAY, I LOVED READING EVERY WORD <333 im gonna list my favorite bits now

was made to look about his age, and acted like most boys his age: irritatingly. --> this is such a haru thing to say. you really captured the essence of him as a kid

He was like a disease, infecting every part of Haru’s life. --> i can really feel his frustration here, of this THING that keeps following him around when it has to business doing that

"You know, I used to swim." --> uh oh.

ahhh the bits where Something is clearly Up with rin are so wonderfully ominous, patches of darkness in otherwise 'bright' story

MAKOTO'S INCLUSION MADE ME REALLY HAPPY along with how it was rin that prompted it :')

THE KISS. HOW DAR EYOU LEAVE IT AT THAT

THANK YOU SO MUCH AGAIN I REALLY ENJOYED THIS<3 and pls do link me sometime if you continue it :D
