Bonus Round 1.5: AUs

AUs

This round is CLOSED as of 7PM EDT on 10 June. Late comments are screened and will not receive points.

Second verse, same as the first! This is an overflow post for br1, meant to hold new prompts and their fills (so that we don't hit comment cap on the first br post).

Please read this whole post before commenting to ensure that your team gets the most points possible. (There are changes from last year!)

RULES
  • Submit prompts by commenting to this post with an alternate universe idea, along with a ship from one of our nominated fandoms. There's a comment template below for your convenience.
    • Your prompt MUST include some kind of relationship. (This is not the sports anime gen olympics.) Platonic relationships are indicated by an "&" between the names (e.g., Izumi & Sakaeguchi). Non-platonic relationships use "/" (e.g., Izumi/Sakaeguchi). Please don't say "Any pairing," either!
  • An AU can be a canon divergence, e.g. "what if [character] was the Team Captain instead of the canon captain character?", or a completely different setting altogether, e.g., pop idol AU, coffee shop AU, superheroes AU, etc.
  • Fill prompts by leaving a responding comment to the prompt with your newly-created work.
  • Remember to follow the general bonus round rules, outlined here.

First 4 fills by any member of your team: 20 points each

All scored content must be created new for this round.

Etc.
If you're hunting through the prompts looking for what to fill, a good trick is to view top-level comments only (see the line of links below this post).

***

The library is quiet when Akashi wakes up in the middle of the night.

(He is used to this, by now.)

He turns towards the window slowly: there, bathed in the moonlight, is someone whose face he has never seen, a silhouette of a man. Akashi doesn’t know if he wants it to look back, to run away, to talk. A shadow cannot talk, surely.

It is not a dream.

-

“Did you sleep well last night?” Mibuchi asks later, in the morning, when it is not moonlight but sunlight streaming through the large windows.

“There’s a painting in my room,” Akashi replies, without really answering the question. “Who is it?”

At that, Mibuchi’s smile falters just a little, but he picks it up in time before Akashi could really ask for more. “That’s—well, I’m afraid I don’t know, either.“

-

The painting is of a young man, silver-haired, sitting on the beach. Akashi can see the same beach outside his window, beyond the curb and shrubs on the other side of the road. It must’ve been painted some time ago, perhaps even before Akashi had been born.

You should find out, shouldn’t you? asks the Other Akashi, who’s now sitting beside him, cross-legged. He’s smiling, not unkindly. Isn’t that what you’re here for?

Akashi stands up and looks down, beyond his legs and bare feet, at his shadow.

There is nothing there.

-

“You know,” Nijimura tells him, over the phone, “I read this Greek story once about how people used to have two of everything. Two sets of hands, feet, whatever.”

“And what happened to that?”

“It was kind of unwieldy going around like that, I guess. That’s why people got split up into two. Then they’d spend all this time looking for whoever they originally were with—the other half.”

“The other half,” Akashi says. “I see. Thank you, Nijimura-san.”

“You doing okay out there? I know you’re an adult now, but—“

“I’m fine.”

When Akashi puts down the telephone in the room, something else lingers, coalescing in the air.

-

Akashi had run away from home, away from the university and what remains of the family mansion in Tokyo. None of it matters now, he thinks, as he sits up in bed at three-fifteen, watching the shadow stand in front the window.

Today the shadow turns, and Akashi can see the silver outline of his hair.

“Tell me your name,” Akashi says. He is not a young master anymore, not since the day he decided to wander, but it is hard to shake old habits. “Why are you here?”

But shadows, Akashi finds, cannot speak for themselves.

-

He shouldn’t stay here for long. One day, the police will find him, take him in for questioning, and everything will come crashing down. Promising university student sets fire to house, runs away days after father discovered dead. They would round up everyone who’d helped him along the way—Mibuchi, Nijimura, the others who had sneaked him out without asking questions.

Akashi doesn’t know why he’s here, how he got here. All he knows is the hollowness inside him growing larger and larger, waiting to be filled. If it had not been filled by the achievements of his schooling or upbringing, what else could he look forward to?

You shouldn’t wait any longer, the Other Akashi says, impatient this time. He’s always been the rasher of the two, demanding, wanting. If it fades away, you will never have a shadow.

“I know that,” Akashi replies. He sits on the bed, waiting, willing himself to not fall asleep. “I know what to do.”

-

When Akashi steps into the darkness, he finds something washing over him, a chill not of dread but of wonder. The shadow places its hands on his shoulders, leaning forward, and looks at him. There is no face there Akashi can see, but—

“I belong to you,” the shadow says, touching his face, “You already knew that, didn’t you? The moment you saw me.”

“Yes.”

Akashi can feel the wind coming in through the window, gently ruffling his hair. There is no warmth on his skin where the shadow is touching him.

It says, “I don’t want to be a shadow anymore.”

“You don’t want to, because you are alone.”

“No,” the shadow whispers, leaning in. “You don’t want to. You cannot bear the thought of it, to be invisible, despite everything you have done.

“Isn’t that why you ran away?”

Akashi smiles, showing teeth. “Perhaps.”

-

In the morning, when Mibuchi comes to knock on his door, he gets no response.

“That’s strange,” he says to himself, pushing on door. It, to his surprise, is locked. “Sei-chan always wakes up on time.”

When he finally finds the keys and unlocks the door, there is nobody in the room anymore.

-

“Where are we going?”

“If you do not want to be what you are anymore,” Akashi says, his footsteps heavier than he remembers them to be, “We need to fix that.”

“And here I thought you wanted me to be yours.”

“You obviously do not want that,” Akashi replies. He is standing on sidewalk, waiting for the bus. In his backpack, bulging slightly, is a wrapped portrait with an unfamiliar name inscribed in its frame. “But for now, this is the arrangement.”

“Otherwise I’ll never go anywhere, huh.”

This time, Akashi does not answer. But when the bus comes, and when he takes a step forward, the shadow following his movements is solid and real.
