Bonus Round 1.5: AUs

AUs

This round is CLOSED as of 7PM EDT on 10 June. Late comments are screened and will not receive points.

Second verse, same as the first! This is an overflow post for br1, meant to hold new prompts and their fills (so that we don't hit comment cap on the first br post).

Please read this whole post before commenting to ensure that your team gets the most points possible. (There are changes from last year!)

RULES
  • Submit prompts by commenting to this post with an alternate universe idea, along with a ship from one of our nominated fandoms. There's a comment template below for your convenience.
    • Your prompt MUST include some kind of relationship. (This is not the sports anime gen olympics.) Platonic relationships are indicated by an "&" between the names (e.g., Izumi & Sakaeguchi). Non-platonic relationships use "/" (e.g., Izumi/Sakaeguchi). Please don't say "Any pairing," either!
  • An AU can be a canon divergence, e.g. "what if [character] was the Team Captain instead of the canon captain character?", or a completely different setting altogether, e.g., pop idol AU, coffee shop AU, superheroes AU, etc.
  • Fill prompts by leaving a responding comment to the prompt with your newly-created work.
  • Remember to follow the general bonus round rules, outlined here.

If you see anyone breaking the code of conduct (e.g., causing drama, being rude) anywhere (not just DW), please contact the mods immediately.

SCORING
These numbers apply to your team as a whole, not each individual teammate. Make as many prompts/fills as you want!

For prompts: 5 points each (maximum of 50 prompt points per team per round)

For fills:
First 4 fills by any member of your team: 20 points each
Fills 5-10: 15 points each
Fills 11-20: 5 points each
Fills 21-50: 2 points each
Fills 51+: 1 point each

All scored content must be created new for this round.

Etc.
If you're hunting through the prompts looking for what to fill, a good trick is to view top-level comments only (see the line of links below this post).

1.

“Just because you can do it doesn’t mean you should.”

Akashi turns towards him; the blood on his chin and white robes stand out starkly in the moonlight. Chihiro wants to reach out, draw a hand across his face, but he cannot.

“I’m fine.” He clasps his hands together, the firelight glancing off his eyes telling. “Assist me again.”

Lies, Mayuzumi thinks, but he only does what he is told.

2.

Mayuzumi had been wandering the outskirts of Heian when Akashi had found him, all of fifty-seven years dead and yet still lingering. Nobody had noticed him before—not even the other lingered, who all eventually moved on or away.

It wasn’t for lost souls to care so much about human affairs any longer, but even Mayuzumi had in life heard of the Akashi clan of onmyouji sanctioned by the imperial family. The child standing before him couldn’t have been more than thirteen, but his eyes were bright and curious and burned with an intensity that Mayuzumi found both fascinating and frightening.

“Will you be my shikigami?” Akashi Seijuurou had asked him, reaching out a hand.

It was not a question.

3.

Enenra, by the most literal definition, are spirits of the flames, the physical manifestation of smoke and shadow cast by the fire. They need fire to survive, to project themselves into the human world.

At least that had been Mayuzumi’s understanding, before all of this.

“That’s not quite true,” Akashi tells him, after the disorientation and discomfort of the binding ceremony had subsided from Mayuzumi’s new body. “Any fire can cast a shadow, create smoke, but they are dead things, without wills or the ability to speak. To create enenra with a mind of its own, that requires the fires of hell.”

Mayuzumi touches himself, his solid but wavering body, and stares at Akashi. “You don’t mean—“

“Yes,” Akashi says, unflinching. Like a moth to flame, Mayuzumi is rendered immobile by a single gaze. “That is exactly what I mean.”

4.

“It was cruel,” Mayuzumi says, not entirely unsympathetic. He can’t say he appreciates what Akashi has done, but he doesn’t want to let Akashi know just yet. “Can’t you just get rid of it?”

“It was necessary,” Akashi replies. He isn’t looking at Mayuzumi, but at the remains of the house after the exorcism. He’s panting a little harder than usual, Mayuzumi realizes, but somehow his voice remains calm. “The imperial capital was besieged on all sides. My father could only find one way to contain—“

“You were five.”

“Yes.” This time, there’s a hint of a tremble in his voice, but it does not stay long. “I was five. Do you know, Chihiro, what will happen were I to let my guard down?”

“The whole city will burn,” Mayuzumi yawns, already halfway out the door. If he feels just the slightest tinge of regret for asking, well—it’s Akashi’s fault in the first place. “You’ve told me five hundred times already. Come on.”

5.

Akashi may be the most gifted onmyouji to grace the land, but every human body has its limits, and the heavens are merciless in their ways of fate and fortune.

“Why do you continue to pretend nothing’s wrong?”

“Would it do otherwise?” Akashi asks suddenly, pulling Mayuzumi down until they are face-to-face, the tatami mats underneath dry and brittle to the touch. His arm, Mayuzumi sees, is deathly pale, though an ordinary person would only see the enchantments of a healthy glow. “The city is in disarray. If I do not continue my activities—”

“Then let it burn.”

The fire in Akashi’s eyes have not dulled one bit since the day Mayuzumi met him. In time, Mayuzumi knows, it would consume him from the inside, escape through every crevice of his body, raze the city to the ground before returning to from where it came. There is no method to extinguish something that is not supposed to be here in the first place, the flames that had let Akashi bring Mayuzumi back into the physical world.

“I never promised to be yours,” Mayuzumi continues, prying Akashi’s hand away from his face. It’s so easy to do it, now that Akashi is lying here, staring up at him harmlessly. But Mayuzumi is not foolish enough to take the bait. “You brought me here.”

Akashi smiles, his cheekbones sharp and high and much too thin. “Are you telling me I made a mistake, Chihiro?”

“No,” Mayuzumi says, leaning in to savor the heat. “I did.”
