Bonus Round 2: Tic-Tac-Toe

Tic-Tac-Toe

This round is CLOSED as of 7PM EDT on 24 June. Late comments are screened and will not receive points.

Get three in a row! That's the goal of this bonus round. Inspired by a fanwork event type called kink bingo, this round encourages you to create and fill out themed prompt cards.

Please read this whole post before commenting to ensure that your team gets the most points possible. There's a lot of text here, but if you read carefully and follow the instructions step by step, you will be okay.

RULES
Please refer to the first comment thread of this post for an example of how this round works.

PROMPTING

  1. Select a ship to create your prompt card about. Platonic relationships are indicated by an "&" between the names (e.g., Haruki & Kazuma). Non-platonic relationships use "/" (e.g., Haruki/Kazuma). Please don't say "Any pairing," either!

  2. Visit this card generator.
    • Here is a visual guide to using it.
    • The large text box is where you can list prompts if you have your own ideas. Please list at least 9 prompts; you can list more if you want. (The generator says you need at least 24, but it's lying.) Single words or short phrases are better than sentences.
    • Otherwise, you can use the dropdown menu found right below it. Note: some of these prompts lists are NSFW. (NSFW prompts are a-ok as long as you tag for it.) If you don't like some of the options that appear in a prompt list, you can delete them.
    • Text prompts only, please. Also, each card square must be unique—don't list the same prompt 9 times.
    • In "Configuration Options," make sure you select 3x3 and (Normal prompt). This is the most important step!
    • Leave the tic-tac-toe card with its default colors, so everyone can read it clearly.
    • Click the "Create a bingo card" button.
    • Scroll down to see the card that was created for you. If you don't like the prompts it picked, you can reroll by clicking "Create a bingo card" again.
    • When you're satisfied, scroll further down the page until you see a textarea box full of HTML.
  3. Copy and paste the HTML from the box and into the body of your prompt comment, then post!

FILLING

Fill prompts by selecting an individual square to create fanwork for, then leaving a responding comment to the prompt with your newly-created work. (Optional:) If you can fill three squares from a prompt in a horizontal, vertical, or diagonal line, you get a tic-tac-toe (and an additional point bonus)! You can also just fill prompts as you please and get standard points.
  • Prompt squares are labeled as follows:
    A1 B1 C1
    A2 B2 C2
    A3 B3 C3
  • If you're trying for tic-tac-toe, you cannot combine squares into one fill. If your fill can satisfy multiple squares, pick the most relevant square: e.g., one square is sailing and another is pirates and you make a fill about pirates sailing, it's mostly pirates so put down the pirates square.
  • Each fill must stand alone as an individual piece, but all your fills can slot into a larger universe if you'd like.
  • You cannot fill a prompt square more than once, but you can fill every square on a tic tac toe card if you want to.
  • You cannot work with your teammates to get a tic-tac-toe. Only individually achieved tic-tac-toes get the bonus.
  • Multiple people can fill the same prompt square. You cannot "block" others from getting tic-tac-toe.
  • Remember to also follow the general bonus round rules, outlined here.
  • Here is a prompt/fill index for your convenience.

SCORING
These numbers apply to your team as a whole, not each individual teammate. Make as many prompts/fills as you want!

For prompts: 5 points for each tic-tac-toe card (maximum of 50 prompt points per team per round)

For fills:
First 4 fills by any member of your team: 20 points each
Fills 5-10: 15 points each
Fills 11-20: 5 points each
Fills 21-50: 2 points each
Fills 51+: 1 point each
Tic-tac-toe Bonus: 2 points each for the first 12 achieved by your team

All scored content must be created new for this round.

Etc.
If you're hunting through the prompts looking for what to fill, a good trick is to view top-level comments only (see the line of links below this post).

to be real I know a tiny bit about herbs but if this isn't a very accurate portrayal of anything druidic, i'm sorry?

***

Otabek is slow to explain what is going on with him long after any reasonable person would have noticed. Yuri had always known there was something different about him, something electric, like if he leaned in close and took a deep breath there was a taste of something on the back of his tongue like the ozone of a lightning storm.

But once Otabek is living in St. Petersburg, the little things start to add up more quickly. Otabek refusing to share his metal water bottle, and when Yuri snitches it out of his bag while Otabek is on the ice and unscrews the cap, only the pungent scent of herbs hits his nose, not the alcohol he'd been expecting. The window of Otabek's apartment is always spilling over with a riot of herbs, even in the dead of winter when it's dark half the time and freezing cold all the time. Otabek always has a wreath of rosemary hung on his door, replacing it every two weeks without fail, and when Yuri reaches up to fish the spare key off the top of the door way, he finds a stick of cinnamon instead, fresh enough to smudge his fingers orange.

"Move in with me," Otabek murmurs into the curve of Yuri's neck, making the lightning Yuri tastes in the back of his throat spill all over his skin. Yuri says yes, yesyesyes, as fast as he can force the words past his lips, and then goes in mouthing them into Otabek's skin until both of them are too exhausted to move. They lie in Otabek's bed, sweat drying on their skin, watching the shadows on the ceiling of cars going by on the street.

"When I live here will you tell me all the stuff finally?" Yuri asks quietly. Otabek is drawing on his side with a fingertip, as he often does, in a way that Yuri knows is meant to seem idle but he's learned over time to feel the familiar touch of symbols that aren't Cyrillic or English.

"Stuff?" Otabek asks mildly.

"The stuff you won't tell me about." Otabek draws Yuri closer, kissing the space just behind his ear, his temple. "If I move in, you have to tell me."

"All right," Otabek whispers, and Yuri's blood sings.

The first night after Yuri's things are shoved in the closets and bookcase next to Otabek's, Yuri sits expectant on the floor across from Otabek and watches raptly as Otabek chalks a figure of complicated lines and runes on the hardwood. He lights the end of a bundle of sage with his lighter and then shakes it out so that the smoke wafts up, stinging Yuri's nose as Otabek hands it to him. Yuri doesn't understand any of it, the runes or the herbs Otabek grinds down with the mortar and pestle, but Otabek puts his palm flat on the hardwood and draws a flower straight up out of the hardwood, Yuri's mouth falling open along with the pink flower's delicate petals.

"It's a sweetpea," Otabek tells him. He looks faintly embarrassed, as if Yuri's caught him showing off. "It's for loyalty and devotion."

Yuri grins at Otabek so fiercely it hurts, and if the way he feels is some kind of spell Otabek cast on him, he doesn't care even a little. "Teach me everything."

“It’s not,” says Aomine, frowning.

Momoi can see the crease in his forehead; he’s always been a bad liar but that’s not a giveaway sign that this is a blatant falsehood. It shows he’s worried, worried that he’s obvious or that nothing will come of this. Momoi supposes this is common, especially when it comes to someone like Aomine who masks all the things he’s not so confident in with the same veneer of oversecurity to compensate. It’s easy to fool people who want to stuff him into the box of hyperconfidence and arrogance, who see only what they want to see out of him and dislike that image (and dislike him for being something he really isn’t in the first place).

“It is,” says Momoi. “You like him, Dai-chan. It’s okay to admit it, you know?”

“I don’t,” says Aomine. “It’s not a crush.”

“Okay,” says Momoi.

She stares at him, crossing her arms over her chest. Aomine looks back at her, defiant at first, but that fades back to the same worried creasing of his face.

“Are you worried he won’t like you back?”

Aomine nods, a jerk of his head.

“He looks up to you.”

“Which is what makes this so fucking pathetic!” Aomine says. “I don’t want him to look up to me and beat me and then have me confess like some fucking…I don’t know, loser, and him find some way to let me down nicely. Or laugh in my face.”

“Kagamin wouldn’t,” says Momoi. “If he does, I’ll kick his ass, but he won’t.”

Aomine snorts at that, but Momoi’s serious. (If she doesn’t protect Aomine, who will? He’s certainly not good at letting anyone else close enough to try.)

“I just…he think’s I’m cool.”

“But he might think you’re unattainably so,” says Momoi (and God knows why Kagami would, but he’s definitely the type to pine and wish for Aomine’s happiness, not out of any desire to martyr himself but because he’s got that kind of interior). “You tell him, you seem more…on his level. You can’t wait for him to lift himself up there and realize it first.”

“It’s…” Aomine starts, trailing off.

“Tough to cede the advantage?”

Aomine shrugs, but then nods when Momoi’s look turns sharper.

“Well, if you really like him then you’re going to have to at some point,” says Momoi. “It’s a give-and-take.”

“You’ve never dated anyone,” says Aomine, but from him that means her advice is being taken very much to heart.

I don't know anything about the golfing experience, sorry if I got stuff horribly wrong. But I'm not sorry about the title.

***

Putt a Ring on It

"Sorry, we're having a 'couples only' day," says the bored looking receptionist at the golf course.

Robo can feel frustration well up inside him, a feeling familiar through repetition, happening very often in conjunction with Youzan and the prospect of a rematch. If he subscribed to Tomoya's idea of fate, he might be inclined to think it's solidly against them.

Every time it looks like they may finally meet in a competition, something happens to prevent it, things ranging from bad luck of the draw to just short of natural disaster. Last time, unexpectedly, it was Youzan's team that failed to qualify far enough for them to play each other. At this rate they may not get to settle the score before graduation, and if there's something Robo learned about himself, it's that he's not actually a very patient person.

Their latest attempt is a little desperate. They've left unsatisfied after the competition and by mutual agreement decided to head to another course nearby in the hopes of playing an unofficial match. But even that seems to be beyond their reach thanks to the unforeseen limitation.

Robo starts deflating, ready to give up for today. But then, instead of thanking the receptionist and turning back like Robo expects him to, Youzan clears his throat and straightens up.

"Actually," he says, putting his arm around Robo's shoulders, "we are a couple."

We are?, Robo thinks, suddenly worried that he's missed some major social cues.

"You are?" the receptionist echoes his thoughts, peering at them in what's probably suspicion.

"Yes," Youzan says, his hand squeezing Robo's arm. "It's, uh. It's our honeymoon and I promised we'd have a golf match, so."

Oh, it's a lie then. Youzan is trying to save their opportunity by pretending they do in fact meet the criteria. A morally questionable plan, but Robo can't disapprove, not when it might give them a chance at the rematch after all.

Only it seems that Youzan has gone too far in trying to establish the legitimacy of their fabricated relationship. It's not outside of the question for two high school students to be together, but claiming they're married stretches the credibility. As expected, the receptionist narrows her eyes at them, looking unconvinced.

"Uh, but if we can't..." Youzan continues, seemingly lost now that his first attempt didn't end in success. He looks at Robo, his eyes wider than usual.

It does seem like their only chance to play here today, so Robo decides to go along with the plan. He may not have any romantic experience to draw on, but he did spend his whole life near a very affectionate couple (his parents), so he should be able to reasonably fake it. With that in mind he leans heavily into Youzan's side, putting his arm around his waist.

Youzan goes stiff against him, his fingers digging into Robo's arm. It doesn't seem very conducive to giving off the impression of a long-time couple. Hopefully it's just a result of surprise and not the level of participation Robo can expect from him from now on.

"It's not your fault, honey," he says, trying to inflect his voice with feeling. It's a lie to match Youzan's — in fact, everything is Youzan's fault, starting from getting Robo interested in golf in the first place. Even now, Youzan just makes a faint strangled noise and doesn't do anything to sell their case better, leaving all the work to Robo.

Robo takes off his visor so it doesn't get in the way and raises up on his toes to press his lips against Youzan's cheek. "Although I did very much hope we'd get to play this match," he adds. That much is true.

"Um," Youzan says, unhelpfully. Robo has to repress the urge to sigh.

A glance out of the corner of his eye reveals that the receptionist is still watching them, her eyebrows raised. Youzan's just looking down at Robo, cheeks growing more red with each passing second. If it's embarrassment due to the poor quality of their act, it could be greatly helped by taking action to follow up on his own plan.

Youzan's hesitation is starting to hurt their case, or so it seems to Robo. To offset it, Robo rocks up again to fit his mouth to Youzan's. If there's one thing that may sell their act, an unambiguously couple-y thing to do, it must be a kiss.

That's another thing Robo doesn't have experience with, but the basics seem simple enough. Although calculating the angle proves more tricky than expected with their noses in the way. Still, it's a success — his lips touch Youzan's, if a few millimeters off-center, both compressing lightly between their teeth.

It's pleasant, though perhaps not as much as Robo believes it should be. That may be partly due to his inexperience, but he's happy to assign the rest of the blame to Youzan, who just breathes in sharply at the contact and then stays perfectly still, his lips unmoving beyond parting slightly. It hardly seems like an ideal kiss, but it will have to do in the circumstances.

They stay like that until Robo draws away, lowering himself to the ground. Youzan continues to stare at him, his face edging past just flushed and into a shade of red that may be unhealthy for humans. Robo is the first to look away, turning to the receptionist to check if their charade had a desired effect.

It's very hard to decipher the expression of a person he's just met, but she doesn't look particularly convinced. If Robo had to put a name to it, he'd says she's closer to amused. He's reading to admit defeat, but when she speaks it's to say: "Okay, wouldn't want to ruin your honeymoon."

"Oh," Robo says, taken over by surprise for a moment. "Thank you."

"No problem. Your name?"

"Hatohara," he says when it seems like Youzan's not about to speak anytime soon.

The receptionist collects their money and hands the keys to their lockers to Youzan with a smile and a "Here you go, Hatohara-san."

"Uh," Youzan says, looking startled. "Right. Thank you."

Robo starts for the locker room, his spirits rising now that it seems like they'll finally be able to get their rematch. Youzan trails after him, jangling the keys in his hand.

"Why was it me that ended up with your name, anyway?" he asks once they're alone in the locker room, with a laugh that sounds a little forced.

"Oh," Robo says, turning back to him as he realizes his mistake. "I apologize. I should've asked before I gave my name as ours." It does seem like something one should agree on beforehand, even if they didn't exactly get a chance to discuss the details.

"No, it's not actually a big deal," Youzan protests, somewhat urgently.

It's kind of him to excuse Robo's blunder, but it was still one, and it would be bad to leave it hanging between them. "I promise to be more considerate next time," Robo says.

Youzan opens and closes his mouth a few times before he settles on an "Okay" and turns to fumble his key into the lock.

Robo does the same, relieved that he's been forgiven. "I confess I didn't really expect this to work," he says.

"Yeah," Youzan replies, clearing his throat. "I didn't expect this either."

He seems distracted when they head out to the course, almost forgetting his soil bag and tripping over a seemingly flat plane of grass on the way. Robo watches him a little worriedly as he sets up for his first shot.

Hopefully Youzan will manage to collect himself for the game so they can play the whole match in optimal condition. Robo would hate it if they didn't get to finish this time.

This is always a fun pairing to write!

***

Atobe's insight was legendary. It first made a name for him on the tennis courts, but that was only the beginning. He quickly rose through the ranks of the business world with one shrewd decision after another putting his name on everyone's radar. The business journals all declared him the new superpower to watch, and the management at rival companies all feared the day they drew the short straw and had to face him in negotiations.

By the time he became the youngest board member in the history of his company, everyone had heard of him, and more importantly, had heard of his insight. They said that when one was in a meeting with him, he would look up with his piercing blue eyes, and then it would be over. He could see through any attempt at dissembling, exposing even the deepest of secrets and filing them away to use for his own ends at a later point.

Less than a month after Atobe moved into his new corner office, his vision began to fail. It was subtle at first, a slight haze that hung over the pages of his notes and blurred the letters on his computer screen. He purchased glasses in the latest style and wrote them off as a concession to fashion and to too many late nights spent with his laptop. But his glasses could only slow the inevitable.

It wasn't hard to hide his condition from his rivals. His insight was still stronger than theirs, even as shaky around the edges as it was, and his rivals both feared and admired him, two emotions that were easy to steer in the directions he wanted.

No, the biggest threat to his position wasn't from any outside company; it was from the CFO who sat in the office adjacent to his. Like Atobe, Oshitari Yuushi had risen quickly through the company hierarchy, and it was no secret that he had his eye on a board position and corner office of his own. He didn't have Atobe's insight, but he was cunning nonetheless and had an arrogance and drive that matched Atobe's own. And whatever he lacked in insight, he made up for with an unshakable poker face.

Oshitari's carefully schooled expressions were unreadable even to Atobe, but not even Oshitari could keep every gesture and twitch under that degree of control. After years of their game, Atobe had learned to read Oshitari's tells like an open book—the way Oshitari's eyes flicked to the corner as he thought and darted back to Atobe once he had made his decision, even if his words continued to vacillate. The way his fingers tightened ever-so-slightly on his pen when he felt cornered, even if he put on a mask of nonchalance.

They were all tells Atobe relied on to continue to hold his position of dominance, and he was rapidly losing his ability to discern any of them. He had never said anything publicly, but he knew that Oshitari had known even before the day Atobe's insight faltered during one of their skirmishes, and he caught Oshitari watching carefully.

He also knew that Oshitari knew that their battle was far from over. He was not going to give up that easily.

I think this is going to be a few one-shots in this AU. We'll see.

***

Kazuya walked into the bar and headed straight towards the bartender, hoping against hope that this would be the place he’d find his answers.

“Hey, Kazuya,” she said, plopping a shot glass on the bar top and filling it from the special bottle she kept behind the bar. She looked over his shoulder at the door. “Where’s your sidekick?”

Kazuya picked up the glass and downed it. “I don’t know; that’s why I’m here. I was hoping he’d been by or you’d heard from him.”

She shook her head. “Nope, nothing since you boys were in here last month. What happened?”

“I don’t really know.” Kazuya shrugged. “I just woke up and he was gone, I’m not sure where he went off to.”

“Were you guys fighting?”

“Not any more than usual, you know how Mochi and I are.” Kazuya picked up the second shot and stared into it, not sure if he wanted any more alcohol in his system.

Kuramochi had disappeared last Wednesday, five days ago. The angel had learned a lot in the last few years accompanying Kazuya on his hunts, but he was still not quite worldly enough for Kazuya not to worry about. There weren’t many of their acquaintance that knew Mochi was an angel, that was a secret they worked hard to keep, but it made it harder to look for him when nobody could understand why he was worried.

“Yeah, I do. I don’t know—you want me to make some calls, see if anyone’s seen him?”

“If you don’t mind, Haruno, that would be great.” Kazuya sipped at his shot, wanting to make it last.

“You mind the bar for me and I’ll be right back.” She slipped under the pass through and handed Kazuya the bar towel. “And don’t let Toujou down there convince you to give him another beer, he’s been cut off.”

Kazuya heard a loud groan from the end of the bar and waved at his friend. “Sorry, boss’s rules.”

“That woman’s going to be the death of me,” he sighed into his club soda. “I don’t know why I put up with it.”

“You love her.” Kazuya wiped at the bar.

“For my sins, yes.” Toujou went back to nursing his drink and Kazuya dealt with the few customers that needed service.

Thirty minutes later, Haruno emerged from the back with a post-it note in her hand. “He was seen yesterday down south, near Seido.”

“Seido? What would he be doing…?” Kazuya cut off as he realized exactly what Mochi would be doing down there. Dropping a quick kiss on Haruno’s cheek, he ducked out of the bar area. “Thanks, Haruno, you’re a peach!” Grabbing his jacket, he exited the bar and climbed behind the wheel of his car. “Come on, baby, let’s go. We’ve got a long drive ahead of us.”

He knew he needed information as quickly as possible, there were quite a few things in Seido that would love to get their hands on an angel, and Kazuya had no idea what he’d gotten himself into. Pulling into the province a little before midnight, he knew what he was going to have to do.

He went down to the crossroads.

Pulling the bone of a black cat and graveyard dirt from his trunk and a photo from his bag, he put them in a box. He trudged to the very center and dug a hole, burying the items and stepped back to wait.

“Hey, how can I help you?”

Kazuya spun at the words and saw a man, gold eyes gleaming in the dark. He’d heard of the yellow-eyed-demon, but he didn’t know of a golden-eyed one. “Wait. Don’t you guys usually have red eyes?”

Gold eyes rolled at him. “You’re joking, right? You believe all those stories...Miyuki Kazuya?”

“You know my name.” Kazuya squinted at him.

The demon grinned at him sunnily. Kazuya blinked. He’d expected seduction, temptation, not sunshine.

“Of course, I know every person who’s played professional baseball for the last twenty years.”

Kazuya felt his eyes widen. “Wait.” He held up his hand. “You know I played baseball? This doesn’t make any sense.”

“It seems like we’ve gotten this off to a bad start, please let me try again.” The demon cleared his throat and bowed a little. “My name is Eijun, thank you for summoning me. How may I assist you, Miyuki Kazuya?”

“I’m looking for a friend.” Kazuya started.

Eijun looked a little dubious. “I’ve never had anyone looking for a friend before, it seems like a strange wish, but sure, I’ll be your friend!” He grinned. “We can play catch! You can catch for me!”

“No, no.” Kazuya shook his head. “I mean, I’m trying to find someone, and I thought you could help.”

“Oh! That’s different. I can help you with that.” Eijun deflated a little. “Does that mean you don’t want to be friends?”

“Let’s start with the finding and see how it goes, okay?”

“Yes!” Eijun pulled out a black book from his pocket. “The cost of finding a person is...six hundred catches.”

“Six hundred...catches?” Kazuya floundered some more. “Not ten years and my soul?”

“Seriously, do you believe everything you read? Remember, history is written by the victors.”

“You’re not collecting souls.” Kazuya deadpanned.

Well, not yours. Not right now.” Eijun hedged. “Do we have a deal?”

“Can I have some time to pay? I don’t know if I can do that tonight and with my knee, I can’t catch for long.”

“You’re right!” Eijun proclaimed, resting his finger on his chin. “Okay, you have a year. In the course of a year, you have to catch for me six hundred times.”

“That’s fine, I can do that.” Kazuya agreed.

“Okay, then.” Eijun was suddenly right in front of him. The demon was an inch or so taller than he was, Kazuya’s brain noticed idly, while Eijun’s hand hooked under his chin. He leaned in and Kazuya’s brains shut down when he felt the press of soft lips to his. The kiss seemed to go on for a bit before Eijun broke it, straightening up. Kazuya fumbled for his snark.

“I thought you didn’t do traditional?”

“We don’t have to; I just really wanted to kiss you.”

Kazuya sighed. He didn’t know if Eijun was an idiot or really smooth, but he was thinking the former. Hoping the former. If it was the latter, he was screwed.

“Is there anything else we need to do?”

“Nope, just tell me who you’re trying to find.”

“Kuramochi You—”

Eijun cut him off. “Mochi-senpai is missing? Why didn’t you say so? I didn’t know you were the human he’d been hanging around with, when did he disappear?”

“Wait, you know Mochi?”

“Fallen angel, remember? Accent on ‘angel’?”

“Oh, yeah. Right.”

“Anyway, what happened? Last I heard from him he was fine hanging out with you.”

“You speak...never mind, I don’t know if I want to know.” Kazuya rubbed his eyes. “At least it makes the explanations shorter. I think he’s looking for Ryou. We got word that Haruichi was down here and I think he left to find him.”

“He didn’t tell you where he was going?”

“Not that I could find, but he’s got an odd sense of what’s obvious, so who knows?”

“Haruichi was here, but he left a week or so ago. If Mochi-senpai came down this way, he’d have figured that out. So we just need to go to where Haruichi is and see if he made it. If not, we’ll come back here and find out what happened.”

“Wait, we?”

“Yeah. I’m coming with you. I need to protect my catching investment.”

“Really?”

“No.” Eijun laughed and explained. “He’s an angel; I can’t find him like I can a person. Plus, I’m worried about him, he’s my friend. I’m coming with you. “

“You can just leave the crossroads untended?”

“Yeah, it’s fine. Chris-senpai wants us to do more community outreach and it’s not like I’m super busy anyway. If someone does come, I have a pager; I can get back here in a matter of seconds. When you called, I was at a Yankees-Mets game. Subway series, there’s nothing like it.” Eijun’s eyes grew unfocused as he gazed into the distance.

“Alright, then.” Kazuya finally found his ‘just roll with it’ button. “Get in the car; we’ve got a ways to go.”

nothing weird happens bc they're middle schoolers ok just to put that out there

***

“What do you mean there can only be one?” Nijimura says, frowning at the charts Momoi had just delivered piping hot into his hands. “This can’t be right—“

“Unfortunately the school doesn’t enough funds to send more than two people, Nijimura-san,” Momoi says, a little apologetic, and a little too pleased in the way Nijimura takes to mean trouble is brewing on the horizon, “So only one other member gets to go to the conference aside from the captain.”

“So you’re coming?”

“Don’t be silly,” Momoi says. “Akashi-kun is the vice captain. Of course he’s the one going.”

“But you’re the manager, shouldn’t you also—“

“I’m actually not available that day, Captain Nijimura,” Momoi replies, flashes him a big smile that’s completely not terrifying or anything coupled with her enunciation of his name. Nijimura could order her to attend, of course, but something tells him that would be a bad idea. “Anyway, if you two go together, that’ll make assigning rooms easier, won’t it? Akashi-kun can give me the details when you’re back.”

(Oh, he’s in for it now.)

-

The conference is in Nagoya, and Shuuzou would’ve gladly taken the shinkansen or even the slow local trains to get there despite the extra time. Anything but flying, and anything but flying with Akashi Seijuurou sitting next to him, looking like he’s completely at home despite their surroundings (Shuuzou’s sure Akashi’s never flown in anything less than first class before outside of school trips.)

Shuuzou, for his part, wants to die. Badly.

He hates flying—Momoi knows that, the whole team knows that, but it doesn’t change the fact that he’s forced to be present. The rumble of the airplane as it lifts off, each little movement that tells Shuuzou oh god, what’s happening now, the rattling of trays and cutlery on the food cart. It’s only an hour, he reasons as he tries to settle in to his aisle seat. At least he could get up and walk around if he feels too jittery.

“Are you okay, Nijimura-san?”

Akashi’s concerned voice brings him back from his jumbled thoughts, and Shuuzou looks at him a little apologetically. This is no way for a senpai to act. “Yeah, no, I—I’m fine. You should get some rest before we touch down.”

“Nijimura-san should do the same.”

He touches Shuuzou’s arm briefly, the kind of touch that says either please take care or something else upon reexamination a few more minutes into Shuuzou’s troubled sleep. So briefly, in fact, that afterwards Shuuzou’s starting to think he might’ve hallucinated the whole thing.

(Why’s he so hung up on that, anyway?)

-

They share a room—of course, this is what Momoi had meant by saving money.

And of course, with Shuuzou’s luck, there’s only one bed.

“Um,” he says, as soon as they enter. Akashi nonchalantly walks over to the bed, pats it, and promptly turns around. “Akashi, do you mind—“

“They’re out of rooms,” Akashi says, back still towards him. “I heard the staff talking on the way up. Do you want me to sleep on the—“

“No,” Shuuzou says, cutting him off immediately. Having Akashi sleep anywhere but the bed would probably result in his untimely death via mafia hit, or whatever security the Akashi family keeps employed. “I’ll…it’s just for one night.”

“Yes,” Akashi replies, looking back with a small smile, the kind that only too late does Shuuzou realize reminds him of Momoi’s. “Just for one night.”

-

“I hate you,” Shuuzou says an hour later, covering his face with his hands.

Akashi puts a hand on his back, and Shuuzou could feel the heat through his clothes. “Do you mean that, Nijimura-san?”

“Of course not, idiot!” He feels Akashi laugh against his back, arms wrapped around his middle. “I just…you could’ve told me.”

“Is Nijimura-san flustered?”

If by flustered you mean am I embarrassed to high hell after accidentally confessing my feelings to my kouhai while in the same bed, Shuuzou thinks, but the only thing that happens is him turning around to flick Akashi on the forehead. “Go to sleep.”

(He’ll be relieved to be alive come morning.)
