Bonus Round 4: Quotes

Quotes

This round is CLOSED as of 7PM EDT on 22 July. Late comments are screened and will not receive points.

An oldie but a goodie—in this round, we draw inspiration from famous words said by other people.

Please read this whole post before commenting to ensure that your team gets the most points possible.

RULES
  • Submit prompts by commenting to this post with a quote attributed to a specific person or character, along with any ship/ot3/etc. from one of our nominated fandoms.
    • Example: "That which does not kill us makes us stronger." -Friedrich Nietzsche
    • The quote can come from almost anything—famous people, poetry, songs, books, movies, etc.— but please don't quote personal conversations you've had or overheard.
    • Your prompt MUST include some kind of relationship. Platonic relationships are indicated by an "&" between the names (e.g., Natsuo & Yuzuko). Non-platonic relationships use "/" (e.g., Natsuo/Yuzuko). Please don't say "Any pairing," either!
  • Fill prompts by replying to the prompt with your quote-inspired fanwork.
  • Remember to follow the general bonus round rules, outlined here.
  • Here is a prompt/fill index for your convenience.

There were many pairs who fought on the battlefield. For some, it was an alliance of convenience—a defensive mage paired with a reckless swordsman to guard him, or a heavily armored knight who shielded a battle mage from harm. For others, their partnership was a sign of something deeper.

Aoyagi and Teshima fell into the latter category. Their partnership had started the day they met as new recruits in the army, but they didn't fight together for the first time until several months later.

Their first battle had been an alliance born of sheer desperation. Aoyagi had found himself cornered by the enemy and cut off from the rest of his allies. Teshima, scouting from the cliffs above, had seen him and loosed most of his quiver on his attackers, sacrificing his position to come to Aoyagi's aid. The bond that had been slowly growing between them solidified on that day, for a life debt wasn't something easily forgotten.

Now, their bond stretched between them like an invisible cord, tying them together even when they were apart. They fought side by side whenever they could, each filling in the gaps in the other's defenses. Even when they were apart, they could sense the other through their bond, always keeping them in the back of their mind.

It was in one such battle, when they had been forced apart by an enemy that stretched their army uncomfortably thin, that everything went wrong. Teshima was fighting his way out of cluster of attackers trying to cut him off from the group when he felt a sharp flash of pain from Aoyagi's end of the bond. It wavered briefly, then re-solidified, but in the split second where Teshima's attention was elsewhere, the enemy saw an opening and sunk a sword deep into his side.

Teshima barely made it to the edge of the battlefield before he collapsed, the sounds of the battle slowly fading away.

The last thing he felt was the surge of desperation coming through his bond to Aoyagi. The last thing he saw was Aoyagi's face appearing at his side. He held onto the image for as long as he could as his vision faded.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
In the darkness, a single thread of light wavered into existence. It glowed but weakly at first, but them pulsed stronger and stronger. Its other end was far out of sight, but it seemed to beckon, tugging on Teshima like a hook.
He followed it.
When he opened his eyes again, he was no longer on the battlefield, but Aoyagi was still at his side, holding his hand as if he'd never let go.
