Bonus Round 4: Quotes

Quotes

This round is CLOSED as of 7PM EDT on 22 July. Late comments are screened and will not receive points.

An oldie but a goodie—in this round, we draw inspiration from famous words said by other people.

Please read this whole post before commenting to ensure that your team gets the most points possible.

RULES
  • Submit prompts by commenting to this post with a quote attributed to a specific person or character, along with any ship/ot3/etc. from one of our nominated fandoms.
    • Example: "That which does not kill us makes us stronger." -Friedrich Nietzsche
    • The quote can come from almost anything—famous people, poetry, songs, books, movies, etc.— but please don't quote personal conversations you've had or overheard.
    • Your prompt MUST include some kind of relationship. Platonic relationships are indicated by an "&" between the names (e.g., Natsuo & Yuzuko). Non-platonic relationships use "/" (e.g., Natsuo/Yuzuko). Please don't say "Any pairing," either!
  • Fill prompts by replying to the prompt with your quote-inspired fanwork.
  • Remember to follow the general bonus round rules, outlined here.
  • Here is a prompt/fill index for your convenience.

In high stakes games, every split second and hair's breadth mattered. Toudou had learned that lesson well, and he had lost count of how many times he had seen an outcome decided by that small a margin.

To anyone looking at him, he would have appeared completely relaxed as he leaned back in his chair in the cafe and checked his hair in the mirror for the fifth time in so many minutes. It was all an act, of course. His hair was perfect, like usual, but it gave him an excuse to check the room over his shoulder in his reflection, and while he looked relaxed in his seat, he had his feet carefully positioned so that he could be standing and clear of his chair in an instant if necessary.

He didn't have to be looking in his mirror to hear when the door slammed open behind him. He'd recognize the way Arakita moved any time; it was less deliberation and more something akin to a force of nature, if a force of nature could be permanently irritated. He waited until Arakita slammed down into the chair across from him before he cut off whatever he was about to say was a laughing "well well well" into his coffee.

He had learned early on that such an unexpected opening inevitably caught the other person off guard, and he would use any advantage he could to keep the upper hand over Arakita. Technically they were supposed to be working together, but nothing was ever that simple when Arakita was involved, or when their line of work in general was involved. On paper, their relationship was simple: Arakita was the one they planted in the field, and Toudou was his handler, but of course in practice, handling Arakita required a degree of finesse that even Toudou had struggled with. If he were to describe their relationship, Toudou would likely have described Arakita as something closer to an informant than to a partner. They technically reported to the same place, but unlike with most of his former partners, Toudou had never been able to read Arakita easily, and sometimes he found himself wondering exactly where Arakita's loyalties lay. It wasn't that he distrusted Arakita exactly. It was just that Arakita was hard to read even among those in their profession, and he would do almost whatever it took to maintain his cover and carry out their objectives, even if that required crossing lines Toudou wasn't sure he would have been willing to cross himself.

Toudou wasn't expecting anything quite so heavy from Arakita today, but he it never hurt to be prepared, and to remind Arakita of just who was in charge. As usual, Arakita grumbled and cursed not-so-quietly at Toudou. Toudou just raised his eyebrows and waited until Arakita's cursing trailed off into muttering that finally faded into silence. If nothing else, the sudden curveball seemed to have worked to settle Arakita, and he was no longer bristling quite so much when he took a flash drive out of his pocket.

Toudou appreciated the tactic for that if nothing else. There was no one he'd want to have his back more in a fight than Arakita, but that same ferocity and quick thinking could make his reports difficult to follow, especially if he was on edge going into them. It never hurt to give him a little reminder of their respective places before they began.
