Bonus Round 4: Quotes

Quotes

This round is CLOSED as of 7PM EDT on 22 July. Late comments are screened and will not receive points.

An oldie but a goodie—in this round, we draw inspiration from famous words said by other people.

Please read this whole post before commenting to ensure that your team gets the most points possible.

RULES
  • Submit prompts by commenting to this post with a quote attributed to a specific person or character, along with any ship/ot3/etc. from one of our nominated fandoms.
    • Example: "That which does not kill us makes us stronger." -Friedrich Nietzsche
    • The quote can come from almost anything—famous people, poetry, songs, books, movies, etc.— but please don't quote personal conversations you've had or overheard.
    • Your prompt MUST include some kind of relationship. Platonic relationships are indicated by an "&" between the names (e.g., Natsuo & Yuzuko). Non-platonic relationships use "/" (e.g., Natsuo/Yuzuko). Please don't say "Any pairing," either!
  • Fill prompts by replying to the prompt with your quote-inspired fanwork.
  • Remember to follow the general bonus round rules, outlined here.
  • Here is a prompt/fill index for your convenience.

***

Sometimes, it feels like a dream. Fuji doesn't know how he was so lucky as to find someone like Eiji for his life, but he's never looked back since then. He's lost track at some point of how many days they've spent together. Of how many times he's seen Eiji's smile, or heard Eiji's ringing laugh as they watch a movie together. Of how many nights he's laid in bed by Eiji's side, or woken in the morning to Eiji curled up next to him with an arm over his shoulder.

But like all things, even it has to end eventually. It feels far too soon. Even if all the time in the world would have felt too soon, he still finds himself wishing for even a little longer. Ever day feels like it has passed too quickly, even if he has a vast library of memories and countless moments together to look back on. He knows he'll never forget all of the memories, even if he should live another ten thousand years.

That's the heart of the problem though. Eiji won't live another ten thousand years. Eiji likely won't even live another ten thousand seconds. There's a sad smile on Fuji's face as he brushes Eiji's hair back out of his face. Eiji looks at peace now, sleep smoothing out the creases that have increasingly crossed his face in wakefulness recently. As much as he loves hearing Eiji laugh, even as weak as the sound is now, Fuji knows he would give it up in a heartbeat if it allowed him to take away Eiji's suffering.

It's hard to imagine a world without Eiji by his side anymore, but he doesn't have a choice in the matter anymore. Eiji stirs and opens his eyes, and Fuji takes his hand. Eiji smiles at him, and somehow Fuji knows this is the end. When Eiji speaks, it's barely more than a whisper, and Fuji leans in close to catch every word.

"I guess this is goodbye," Eiji says. "Thank you for everything."

"Thank you," Fuji says. If he whispers, it hides the way his voice is shaking. "Thank you for all of the memories."

Eiji smiles. It's the smile that Fuji remembers, a smile he's seen less and less of recently. Then Eiji's eyes close again. His hand is still in Fuji's. Fuji finds himself breathing with the steady rise and fall of Eiji's chest.

He doesn't notice when Eiji stops breathing. He notices later, when his body is suddenly screaming for air, and time seems to hang frozen in that moment. It feels almost like if he never breathes again, maybe he can make this moment last forever. This in-between time where Eiji isn't truly gone.

Then nature takes over. He gasps for breath, and time resumes it's normal flow. Eiji doesn't come along with it. Fuji runs a thumb over Eiji's cheek. "Goodbye," he whispers, no longer trying to hold back the tears that fall onto Eiji's forehead. "Thank you. For everything."
