Bonus Round 4: Quotes

Quotes

This round is CLOSED as of 7PM EDT on 22 July. Late comments are screened and will not receive points.

An oldie but a goodie—in this round, we draw inspiration from famous words said by other people.

Please read this whole post before commenting to ensure that your team gets the most points possible.

RULES
  • Submit prompts by commenting to this post with a quote attributed to a specific person or character, along with any ship/ot3/etc. from one of our nominated fandoms.
    • Example: "That which does not kill us makes us stronger." -Friedrich Nietzsche
    • The quote can come from almost anything—famous people, poetry, songs, books, movies, etc.— but please don't quote personal conversations you've had or overheard.
    • Your prompt MUST include some kind of relationship. Platonic relationships are indicated by an "&" between the names (e.g., Natsuo & Yuzuko). Non-platonic relationships use "/" (e.g., Natsuo/Yuzuko). Please don't say "Any pairing," either!
  • Fill prompts by replying to the prompt with your quote-inspired fanwork.
  • Remember to follow the general bonus round rules, outlined here.
  • Here is a prompt/fill index for your convenience.

***

When Kuroo first saw Kenma, he was walking past the slave pens in the market. He hated the things, but on market day, there was no faster way to get back out of the city than to go past them, and with his baskets heavily laden with everything he had brought that morning, and everything he had purchased, he didn't want the added hour it would take to go around.

He usually tried to avoid looking at the pens, the sight of all of the poor slaves too much to bear, but today, someone caught his eye. He couldn't have been any older than Kuroo himself, a small boy curled up in the corner, shying away from prying eyes as much as possible.

Kuroo didn't know what compelled him, but the next thing he knew, he was signing the papers to purchase the slave as his own. The boy's name was Kenma, the papers said, though the slavemaster said he was welcome to change the name should he so desire.

Once the papers were in order, Kuroo's first stop was to the blacksmith to have the heavy metal collar removed from Kenma's neck. Kenma didn't speak a word the entire time, but the look in his eyes spoke volumes. Kuroo wished he knew how to reassure him, but he knew Kenma had no reason to believe anything he said.

His next stop was a stall in the market to buy Kenma a new set of clothes. The to the town magistrate to sign the papers that would free him.

"You can still stay with me if you like," Kuroo said. "Unless you have somewhere else you'd rather go."

Kenma followed him home. Something about the situation made Kuroo uneasy; he didn't know what he had expected, but something didn't feel quite right. It wasn't until Kenma was drying his hair after a bath that Kuroo saw the red padlock on the back of his neck. It was a faint pink currently, and normally hidden by Kenma's hair.

Kuroo's heart froze in his chest.

"You...?" he said, resting a finger on the mark when he couldn't find the appropriate words.

Kenma nodded, his eyes sparkling with some combination of hatred, challenge, and satisfaction.

Kuroo knew the spell. It wasn't technically illegal to place it on a slave, but it was heavily frowned upon. The mark was faint now, but if Kenma strayed too far from Kuroo or stayed away for too long, then it would grow darker and darker until it was hot enough to burn. It had been hidden by the collar, but now that he saw it, Kuroo knew that removing Kenma's collar wouldn't be enough to free him the way that he had hoped. For that was one of the reasons the spell was so despised. Unlike collars that could be cut, or papers that could be destroyed or voided, there was no way to remove the spell. It could be transferred from one owner to another, but there was no way to ever fully free one marked from it from its hold. Some mages had tried to redirect the target of the spell to the person who bore its mark, but none had been successful.

"I'm sorry," Kuroo said.

Kenma curled closer to him, hesitant but not afraid as he had been earlier.

"I don't hate you," Kenma said, and Kuroo thought that would have to be enough for now.
