Bonus Round 4: Quotes

Quotes

This round is CLOSED as of 7PM EDT on 22 July. Late comments are screened and will not receive points.

An oldie but a goodie—in this round, we draw inspiration from famous words said by other people.

Please read this whole post before commenting to ensure that your team gets the most points possible.

RULES
  • Submit prompts by commenting to this post with a quote attributed to a specific person or character, along with any ship/ot3/etc. from one of our nominated fandoms.
    • Example: "That which does not kill us makes us stronger." -Friedrich Nietzsche
    • The quote can come from almost anything—famous people, poetry, songs, books, movies, etc.— but please don't quote personal conversations you've had or overheard.
    • Your prompt MUST include some kind of relationship. Platonic relationships are indicated by an "&" between the names (e.g., Natsuo & Yuzuko). Non-platonic relationships use "/" (e.g., Natsuo/Yuzuko). Please don't say "Any pairing," either!
  • Fill prompts by replying to the prompt with your quote-inspired fanwork.
  • Remember to follow the general bonus round rules, outlined here.
  • Here is a prompt/fill index for your convenience.

It's unusual to take on an assignment with no lead time. Kinjou especially is a planner; he refuses to go into a situation without having as much information on it as possible, and if something he comes across in his planning stages makes him believe the assignment is not what it appears to be, he has no qualms about dropping it then and there.

Sometimes though, extenuating circumstances arise, and standard procedure falls by the wayside. It's due to one such situation and Kinjou currently finds himself gearing up for a mission with Makishima and almost no information at all. The call had come in less than half an hour earlier, and the data given was severely limited. But it had come from high up their command chain, and it had included several of their close colleagues in danger. Kinjou didn't even have a chance to finish asking the question before Makishima agreed. They tried to take as many precautions as they could in their normal work, but their friends would always take priority.

They arrived at the site with little more information than they had had when they left, but one look at the evolving chaos was enough to have Kinjou wincing internally. It wasn't the worst situation he had ever walked into, but he would probably put it in his top ten. Events were still unfolding though, so there was time yet to turn it around.

As much as he wanted to spring into action immediately, he forced himself to wait for Makishima's okay. After all, it was Makishima who would be keeping him shielded from the worst of the danger; rushing ahead blindly would only put both of them at risk.

In the end, it turned out not to have been nearly as bad as he had feared. The chaos had arisen from miscommunication and poor execution on both sides, and turning the tides was more a matter of regaining control and cohesion among his comrades than about overpowering their enemy. It was still too close for Kinjou's comfort though. If their target had regrouped before they had, the tide could have easily turned in the other direction. He tried not to think about that too much; sometimes sleeping at night required not thinking about a lot of things in their line of work.

"It looks like we arrived just in the nick of time," Makishima remarked after everything had been settled and all of the reports had been filed.

"Does that make us heroes?" Kinjou asked as they drove away.

"Damn right it does."

Kinjou laughed. Neither of them would say as much in public, and neither of them liked it when others tried to attach that label to them, but it was different in private. It was a long-standing tradition that they could pat themselves on the back after a good mission and reward the other for a job well done.
