Bonus Round 4: Quotes

Quotes

This round is CLOSED as of 7PM EDT on 22 July. Late comments are screened and will not receive points.

An oldie but a goodie—in this round, we draw inspiration from famous words said by other people.

Please read this whole post before commenting to ensure that your team gets the most points possible.

RULES
  • Submit prompts by commenting to this post with a quote attributed to a specific person or character, along with any ship/ot3/etc. from one of our nominated fandoms.
    • Example: "That which does not kill us makes us stronger." -Friedrich Nietzsche
    • The quote can come from almost anything—famous people, poetry, songs, books, movies, etc.— but please don't quote personal conversations you've had or overheard.
    • Your prompt MUST include some kind of relationship. Platonic relationships are indicated by an "&" between the names (e.g., Natsuo & Yuzuko). Non-platonic relationships use "/" (e.g., Natsuo/Yuzuko). Please don't say "Any pairing," either!
  • Fill prompts by replying to the prompt with your quote-inspired fanwork.
  • Remember to follow the general bonus round rules, outlined here.
  • Here is a prompt/fill index for your convenience.

Sanada had always thought that the key to victory lay in strength. Whether it was in the dojo or on the tennis court, he relied on his strength to crush his opponent. He knew he was stronger than many, and he took pride in his strength. He was never satisfied with what he had, always striving to be stronger and more immovable than he had been the day before. Through his entire childhood, it never occurred to him that there were types of strength beyond pure physical power.

Then he joined the tennis team at Rikkai and met Yukimura. There was no doubt as to which of them would win in a contest of physical strength; Yukimura didn't look like much even compared to their teammates, and he looked positively frail next to Sanada. But the first time he watched Yukimura play, Sanada knew there was no question which of them would win if they ever were to face one another. He had always believed that one could overcome anything with sufficient strength, but looking at Yukimura, all Sanada could think was that even a mountain would crumble if it's base were shaken. In fact, the more rigid something was, the more vulnerable it seemed to be to Yukimura's approach. That which was soft and malleable was easier to crack, but it also could absorb those cracks more easily. Something as rigid as Sanada was was more difficult to crack, but even the smallest crack could spread rapidly until it shattered the entire stone shattered.

Yukimura didn't need physical strength to win. He had mastered the art of turning his opponent's strength back around on them; the stronger and more confident his opponent was, the harder they tended to fall when Yukimura drew them into his net.

When Sanada fought, he met his opponent's strength with his own, confident that their stamina would run out before his. Yukimura needed no such thing. The matches where he spent the most physically were those against weaker opponents. The harder his opponent threw themselves at him, the more they hurt themselves when he pulled that strength out from under them.

Sanada had always valued physical strength above all else, but from the day he met Yukimura, he knew he had met someone who was truly a master. From that day, he was proud to call Yukimura his captain.

When he tried to explain Yukimura to his grandfather that night, his grandfather had smiled and handed him a well-worn book from a shelf.

"The Art of War?" Sanada asked.

"Read it and you will understand."

Tennis grandfathers truly understand... Thank you so much! This is such an excellent expression of how Sanada would feel about Yukimura being so overwhelming!
