Bonus Round 4: Quotes

Quotes

This round is CLOSED as of 7PM EDT on 22 July. Late comments are screened and will not receive points.

An oldie but a goodie—in this round, we draw inspiration from famous words said by other people.

Please read this whole post before commenting to ensure that your team gets the most points possible.

RULES
  • Submit prompts by commenting to this post with a quote attributed to a specific person or character, along with any ship/ot3/etc. from one of our nominated fandoms.
    • Example: "That which does not kill us makes us stronger." -Friedrich Nietzsche
    • The quote can come from almost anything—famous people, poetry, songs, books, movies, etc.— but please don't quote personal conversations you've had or overheard.
    • Your prompt MUST include some kind of relationship. Platonic relationships are indicated by an "&" between the names (e.g., Natsuo & Yuzuko). Non-platonic relationships use "/" (e.g., Natsuo/Yuzuko). Please don't say "Any pairing," either!
  • Fill prompts by replying to the prompt with your quote-inspired fanwork.
  • Remember to follow the general bonus round rules, outlined here.
  • Here is a prompt/fill index for your convenience.

It's somewhat unexpected to see Sadaharu again across the net. Not entirely unexpected, of course; he had done his research into Seigaku's players before the match and knew that there was a chance he would be facing Sadaharu again.

What surprises him more is the look on Sadaharu's face. It's not one he remembers Sadaharu making before, not that he once created a mental catalogue of every expression Sadaharu made and its corresponding meaning or anything. He's not entirely sure how to interpret this face, but Sadaharu's tennis has improved too much for him to spend too much time on it currently, so he files the look away for later analysis.

They've both improved, and their match falls into an almost familiar pattern. They haven't seen one another in years, but within seconds they're already finishing one another's sentences again.

It's not until five games later that Yanagi realizes just how familiar the game feels, and in the same heartbeat, he realizes that he's underestimated Sadaharu's growth. The match up until now hasn't been their true battle; it's merely been the setup for them to show what they've each become.

In the end, it's Sadaharu who gains the upper hand. That is surprising to Yanagi; he had felt confident in his data when his probability of winning was over 95% earlier in the match, but then again, Sadaharu had always been able to surprise him in ways that few others had.

He catches up to Sadaharu after the match. He's not sure exactly what he wants to say. He doesn't think it's to congratulate Sadaharu on his victory, not when it came at the cost of Rikkai's loss. Saying hello again doesn't seem quite right either, not after they laid everything out on the courts less than two hours earlier.

In the end he settles for, "you've grown."

The look that Inui gives him is even more of an unknown than the one he first saw across the net that day. His first thought is that it's the equivalent of a "404: Page Not Found" error on a website. He has more time to analyze now, so he tries to dissect the expression down into its core pieces. Sadaharu's face has changed over the years, but it's still similar enough for his old reference sheets to work well enough. There's some similarity to "surprise," and to "uncertainty," and "hesitation," but the ones that catch Yanagi off guard are what he swears are matches for "anger," and "pain."

He doesn't understand, and he's not sure how to formulate the question. He tries his best, but Sadaharu snaps, "you left. You didn't say anything," and then he tries to storm off in turn.

Yanagi follows. It's impossible to miss the hurt on Sadaharu's face now, and even if it's been years since they last saw one another, the need to make that hurt go away is as strong as ever.
