Bonus Round 5: Clue

Clue

This round is CLOSED as of 7PM EDT on 5 August. Late comments are screened and will not receive points.

Sometimes, all you need are a few little details to imagine something bigger. This round is inspired by a classic board game with a cast of colorful characters, but for SASO your only limits on "who", "where", and "with what" are what you can imagine (and the SASO fandom list, of course)!

This round closes on 5 August @ 7PM EDT. (Countdown Timer.)

Please read this whole post before commenting to ensure that your team gets the most points possible. (There are changes from last year!)

RULES
  • Submit prompts by commenting to this post with the format of a Clue mystery - "[character] in the [location] with [item]", along with any ship/ot3/etc. from one of our nominated fandoms.
    • Example: Sawamura Daichi in the teachers' lounge with the Hello Kitty! lunchbox
    • The person in your prompt MAY be a member of your ship, but is not REQUIRED to be part of your ship. They must still be a named character from a SASO-nominated fandom.
    • Your place must be a physical location, not a state of being or a state of being. However, this location is not required to be real, nor must it be from the same setting as the characters.
    • The "item" used must be a physical object that the character can hold or manipulate.
    • Unlike the board game, your prompt is NOT required to imply murder. The scenario implied can be anything at all! (As always, please tag properly!)
    • Your prompt MUST include some kind of relationship. Platonic relationships are indicated by an "&" between the names (e.g., Natsuo & Yuzuko). Non-platonic relationships use "/" (e.g., Natsuo/Yuzuko). Please don't say "Any pairing," either!
  • Fill prompts by replying to the prompt with your Clue-inspired fanwork.
  • Remember to follow the general bonus round rules, outlined here.
  • Here is a prompt/fill index for your convenience.

Toudou knew he should throw a curtain over the mirror. It was too distracting. He had other work that needed to be done. Farseeing and sniffing out dangerous magic and subtle wards in all the right places. There were so many things within his power to keep his kingdom running smoothly and he had a schedule to keep.

As soon as he finished telling himself this Toudou found himself standing once again in front of the magic mirror. It hung over the table he used to make talismans, and while he worked he would sometimes give it a command like, “Mountains” or “Birds,” because there were no windows in the hidden part of the dungeon where he had his workshop.

That was until he discovered an anomaly in the mirror. Toudou glared at it, but until he gave it a command all he would see was restless smoke that threw no reflection.

“Mirror, mirror on the wall; Who’s the fairest one of all?”

The mirror, which should have simply reflected his beautiful face, shivered all across its surface and showed another form. This was a young man with gangling limbs and a painfully awkward smile and hair the shiny green of a beetle shell.

“You are not more beautiful than me!” Toudou snapped at the mirror and stormed away, letting the image ripple away to smoke.

He would not have been so irritated if the mirror had showed him almost anyone else. If it had been some sweet young thing or a handsome stranger or his sister he could have shrugged it off as a matter of taste. Who could tell how a mirror measured such things.

But he knew Makishima. Makishima was not beautiful. He held himself like a spider when he was uncomfortable, which was often. His laugh was so sharp it sounded like a sneeze and his jaw clenched when he smiled. He was awkward and sardonic on his best days.

Which wasn’t to say he didn’t enjoy Makishima’s company. He did. Makishima felt magic in his bones the way Toudou did. They had ridden out together, ostensibly to gather potion ingredients, and raced each other to distraction. Toudou had come away more than once giddy from laughing, and the smile that slid across Makishima’s face at times like that could not be called awkward.

They were rivals, of course. As magic practitioners their pride would allow nothing less, and Makishima was the best of rivals.

Toudou spent some time gazing out at weather patterns. The spring rains were coming in at more or less the same pace as ever. He wouldn’t attempt to shift them for anything less than a drought. He couldn’t do it on his own anyway. It meant collaboration on a scale that included treaties, some in blood, and far too many egos. Toudou would have to hold court, as it were, and so few could actually keep up with him.

He was back at the mirror almost before the thought finished. The one who could keep up with him would have to be Makishima, but Makishima couldn’t keep up with him as far as beauty, obviously.

This time when Makishima appeared in the mirror he was reading. He smiled to himself, and maybe he was a little more beautiful when no one was looking at him and making him self-conscious.

Toudou wasn’t about to do something rash like poison him out of jealousy, of course, he just hated how it didn’t make sense. Maybe if Makishima had a more symmetrical face, but there was the mole by his eye and the one by his mouth. Toudou actually though the beauty marks added to his appeal, but that was the sort of thing only a human could fully appreciate, right?

Why was he pretending he knew how a mirror thought?

Toudou went around this way for the entire day. He seemed to get half as much done as he should and yet he was exhausted. At one point he turned away and had trouble dragging his focus, and his powers, from the mirror until he snapped his fingers impatiently at the mirror as if it were misbehaving.

He immediately felt silly. It might be enchanted but he was still scolding an inanimate object.

The mirror hadn’t even been interesting when he knew it would always show him. Then he tried to use it to check his hair before he went upstairs and there was Makishima’s face and now he couldn’t leave it alone.

Much later, Toudou woke up cold to his bones. He didn’t remember sitting down at the table in front of the mirror, but that was where he had laid his head down.

Now he distantly remembered the first time he’d used the mirror. He hadn’t seen himself, but his mother. He had been so excited at how perfect the picture was. He could see the flash of temper in her eyes and all the familiar laughter lines. Except when he told her she had said that he couldn’t have seen it, because he and his sister had surpassed her in beauty a long time ago.

After he inherited the magic mirror it never showed anyone else, only him. Toudou had found it wrapped up in black velvet and put it back on the wall because there was no window.

And now when he asked for the fairest it showed him Makishima.

“You’re showing me who I want to see. You sneaky-” Toudou tried to stand too quickly and his head swam. He had to put his head in his hands until things stopped reeling.

When was the last time he’d seen Makishima? It must have been at the ball where Fukutomi’s fiancé ran out with one shoe. Had it been so long?

Makishima was awful company at parties. Toudou was forced to choose between being in the middle of the excitement and attention that he loved and being on the sidelines where he didn’t belong, but that was where Makishima was and he wanted to be with Makishima.

Toudou plucked that thought out of his lightheaded rambling. He wanted to be with Makishima.

He wanted to see Makishima so badly he had been pouring magic into a stupid mirror. Toudou glared at the foggy surface as if it had tricked him.

“Well, now that I know what the problem is, I’ll just go see him.”

This sounded very calm and reasonable. Moving carefully, he managed to get to his feet. If he was going to see Makishima it was going to be at his best, not weak and overtired.

Except even if he woke up in the morning and immediately started planning it would still be days before he actually set eyes on Makishima, possibly weeks.

Toudou could swear he had started towards the door yet here he was in front of the mirror. In the low light his shadow could almost be confused for an unfamiliar face lying under the shifting smoke.

What did he even expect to see? Makishima would surely be asleep by now anyway.

He was too tired to cast anything. His bones were drained out. His mother had warned him countless times: never sleep where you practice magic. Not even the most benign magic. She would have been livid if she’d found out he’d dozed off like that.

She was always careful about things like that. She must have covered the mirror for a reason. The thought came and went and left nothing behind.

The one thought he couldn’t let go of was that he wanted to see Makishima, just for one second more.

Sekizan has a habit of finding what he's looking for when he isn't actively searching for it.

He never really puts very much thought into becoming a hedge witch: he likes magic, and he likes plants, and it's something that comes together quite well for him so he doesn't really think about it past that. He's content just working on it in his spare time, working in the café to earn money so that he can buy more spell books that he can read through until he learns how his own magic works.

It's by pure chance that the manager of the café sees him playing around with the flowers that they place on each table as he sets up for the morning. Sekizan can do this much at least, making the flowers bloom bigger than they would on their own, their petals a touch brighter.

"Sekizan," Komori says, making him jump and nearly knock over the vase he's currently bent over.

Komori's expression is always a little difficult to read. When Sekizan looks over his shoulder, Komori is frowning, as he usually is. He folds his arms across his chest and raises an eyebrow at Sekizan. "Do you really think you should be proud of being able to do so little?"

Sekizan looks down at the flower that's blooming, at least one and a half times bigger than it was before. "I…"

"You can do better," Komori tells him plainly. "Why are you content with flowers in vases when you can turn the interior of this café into a living garden that thrives under your magic?"

"Oh." Sekizan blinks. "Is that something that I'm allowed to do?"

Komori grins, in that way of his that always makes Sekizan's embarrassing crush on his manager surface. "Do you think you can do it?"

"Do you know how magic works?" Sekizan asks, rubbing the back of his neck. "I'm mostly going off what I've read, but I've never been taught."

"Here," Komori says, and walks over to stand right beside Sekizan. He places his hand over Sekizan's and guides it to the edge of the vase.

"Komori-san—"

"Concentrate," Komori tells him, and Sekizan does, but he's not sure that he's meant to be focusing on the feeling of Komori's hand on top of his. "Magic doesn't go anywhere unless you can visualise where you want it to go. I doubt that you have any trouble seeing exactly what you want. How do you want the plants to grow? What do you want it to look like?"

Sekizan shuts his eyes and imagines it. He imagines ivy along the walls, vines hanging from the ceiling, the entire place picked out with bright flowers. It's almost as if his magic is pulled out of him and into the spell that he casts, and he opens his eyes in time to see the burst of green as it grows out of the vase and all around the room.

"Oh," Sekizan breathes in wonder, looking around.

Komori squeezes his hand, then pulls away. "Good. Finish setting up the rest of the place before we open."

Sekizan blushes, biting his lip as Komori walks away. "Yes, sir."

Soft footfalls echo in the walls, the sound of careful feet on crumbling stone the only noise that Daichi makes as he goes deeper into the castle. There isn't anyone left here, not after the war and the pillaging army and—

Daichi's foot slips into a hole in the floor he hadn't seen in the near dark. He stumbles forward, the firelight cast by his torch wavering and making the shadows lurking in the shadows dance.

There are ghosts here, they say, unhappy spirits of those who didn't make it out. Nobody should go near the castle ruins, let alone into the castle itself. If the falling crumbling castle didn't get you, the ghosts would.

Daichi had believed them and that is why he is here, making his way through a castle in ruins with only a handmade torch as his guide. His previous misstep makes him careful, watching where he places his feet and avoiding the parts of the castle that have completely fallen away.

He sees the ghosts too, skittering things at the edge of his vision, hiding from his firelight and his footsteps. They are watching him, gathering in the shadows and whispering words that get caught up in the wind before they can reach Daichi's ears.

When he reaches the castle annex, Daichi stops. He stares down into a hollow abyss in the floor, separating this part of the castle from the next. There isn't a way to cross so large a gap and he paces at its broken edge, waving his torch to illuminate both ends of the corridor in hopes of finding a way across.

The wind picks up behind him, ruffling his hair and tugging at his clothes. A whisper reaches his ears, a collective voice of many saying, "Jump. We'll help you across."

His firelight flickers and in that moment, Daichi feels the presence of the many that had been here, inhabitants of the castle that had lived and fallen with it. He wipes a hand across his eyes, catching his breath as he backs up. Then he runs towards the edge of the gap, his muscles straining as he leaps as far as he can.

For a moment, he is suspended in midair, nothing but the gaping abyss beneath him. Then the wind howls, phantom hands settling on him, carrying him across the rest of the way and depositing him on solid stone.

"Thank you," Daichi says, adjusting his grip on his torch. They dance out of range of his firelight but Daichi can hear their whispers around him, incoherent again now that they aren't speaking as one.

He trudges on, making his way through this part of the castle by the light of his torch, trusting his legs to remember the path he had taken so many times before. He goes up the stairs and all the way across the corridor, into the room at the highest and farthest end of the castle.

Daichi knocks out of habit, three sharp raps of his knuckles against splintered wood reverberating through the empty castle, an echo of the past. Then he pushes the door open and steps inside.

Moonlight floods through an open window, illuminating the room so brightly, so vividly that Daichi almost forgets about the war and the crumbling castle it had left in its wake. He knows every inch of this room from the grand collection of books lining the walls, arranged alphabetically and according to the space left on the shelves, to the massive table in the middle of the room, two chairs knocked askew on the floor, to the bed tucked away in a corner, fitted for two.

The whispers that had followed him through the castle fade away and his torch comes to the end of its life, the firelight giving way to the light of the moon. There is a breeze coming through the window, ruffling Daichi's hair and caressing his face.

"Daichi," a lone voice whispers, tickling his ear.

"Kuroo," Daichi says, his voice cracking on that name.

A weight settles over his shoulders, invisible arms pulling him into a hug. Daichi knows this presence even if he can't see it. He would know Kuroo in life and in death.

"I'm sorry I didn't make it in time," Daichi says and his breath hitches, coming in short spurts and wracking his chest. His eyes are wet and he swipes a hand over his face, finding tears streaming down his cheeks. "I'm sorry. I should have been here."

"Shh. Don't be," Kuroo murmurs, his presence settling over Daichi, wrapping him up in all of him. "I'm glad you didn't get caught up in this. Everyone was so happy to see that you survived. Daichi? Daichi, don't cry.”

a strange courtship.

***

Miyahara hums tunelessly as she kicks her feet in the tidal pool.

Everything is touched by the yellow summer sun here; the rocky outcrop radiates a warmth that curls pleasantly inside her chest, the ocean salt dries white and crystal under her hand where the tide had left sea grass and abalone shards strewn across the rock, glittering like stars under the bright blue sky. It’s been a series of beautiful days, and Miyahara knows that like all the other things summer has always given her, it won’t last forever.

A voice joins hers in humming, a thing so lovely and sweet, Miyahara can only think of the soft swell of the waves as they sculpt ribbons into the sand at dawn. “Hi again,” the voice hums brightly along with hers. “You came,” the voice continues in harmony. Miki is singing from the sand bank as she swims up and Miyahara has never felt a sound vibrate so light and breathless inside of her lungs; she wants that voice of bright summer sun and the deep blue sea to live inside of her lungs until there’s nothing left. She wonders if her own voice can even say a thing like that. She wonders if courage could ever live alongside such sweetness.

But Miyahara just nods seriously instead, twin tails moving like shadows across her bare shoulders as she says, “Of course I did. We had a date. And who else would bring you your favourite?”

The stories can’t even begin to describe the way a mermaid’s smile lights up like the sun scattering white and blinding off the waves at noon. Miki swims right up to Miyahara’s feet dipped in the water, and her fish tail flashes golden and green. “I brought snacks, too! I know we had that little accident last time, but I made sure that you can eat this. I saw the fisherman by the dock eating something similar, too.”

“You went to the docks?” Miyahara’s back goes stiff. Clouds pass over the water and she feels their shadows moving cold and grey, too.

“Don’t worry, I can take care of myself,” Miki smiles, and the way something sly and sharp touches the corner of her mouth, Miyahara believes her completely. “Besides, now I know that this is something we can share!”

Sea urchin. Slices of abalone. Miki takes them out slowly from a bag of sea grass and she peeks from under her bangs at Miyahara as she lays them out at her feet. Miki’s fingers pat fussily as she works and her gills are fluttering nervously, and Miyahara wonders at that.

“What are you thinking?” Miyahara asks. She’s slowly uncapping the thermos of jasmine tea that Miki loves so much, and the sweet floral of it lies like a strange taste of spring amidst all the heavy salt and sea that surrounds them; when something of the soft earth walks knowingly into the deep dark swell of the waves. Miyahara is not afraid.

“Come down into the water,” Miki breathes as she pulls herself up on her arms. Her beautiful voice is a hook of bone inside of Miyahara’s chest. “Eat the meal I brought for you and come down into the water with me.”

Miyahara knows that the bright yellow sun on the waves doesn’t go deep; she knows that right under the surface everything drops away to something dark and cold. But Miyahara is still not afraid. “Only for a little while,” Miyahara lies as she eats a slice of abalone.

“Only for a little while,” Miki lies, smiling brightly as she pulls Miyahara to her under the water.

Imayoshi arranged the sheets around him neatly, frowning a little as the sun stung his eyes. Perhaps he should get those glasses where the lenses darkened automatically in response to sunshine? They’d be expensive, though. He couldn’t ask his parents for them and really, it wasn’t as if they played outside that often--

“This is the first time I’ve seen anyone with a folder of printed-out spreadsheets,” an amused voice said.

Imayoshi twisted from the waist and tilted his head up, staring up at the other teenager. Brown hair, glasses, eyes also squinted so he couldn’t tell what color they were - the stranger was blocking the sun so it was hard to make out his features but Imayoshi was fairly sure that Imayoshi didn’t know him.

“If you bring a laptop outside into direct sunlight, it overheats immediately,” Imayoshi said and then nodded in the direction of the court. “Sometimes it breaks even before that when it gets hit by a basketball.”

The ball resounded with a thunk against the backboard before swishing into the net. Wakamatsu celebrated loudly and the stranger smiled briefly.

“I see. Our analyst always takes notes by hand too.”

Our? Imayoshi’s interest sharpened. Was this a competing player from a different school? What a day for Momoi to take Aomine out shopping. She was so good at getting information out of people.

“Oh, what’s his name? Perhaps I know him,” Imayoshi said casually, adjusting his glasses as if he weren’t paying too much attention to the conversation.

“Inui Sadaharu,” the boy supplied. “And I’m Fuji Shuusuke.”

“Imayoshi Shoichi,” Imayoshi said in response, leaning back against the mesh backing. “What school do you play for?”

“Seigaku,” Fuji said, shifting a little to block out the sun better for Imayoshi.

Imayoshi smiled briefly in thanks before he frowned as he recognized the name. “Seigaku… Isn’t that the middle school that had a 12-year-old go to the US Open? I didn’t know you had a basketball program as well.”

It couldn’t be very good. Imayoshi didn’t remember having played them or even heard of them.

“We don’t, as far as I know,” Fuji said equably though his smile had a new edge to it. “I play tennis. And yes, Echizen won the US Open.”

The slight stress on the word made Imayoshi smile, just as brief and sharp as Fuji’s smile.

“Thinking of coming here?” He asked, sizing the younger boy up as best as he could.

“I was,” Fuji said and let his smile vanish. “But I don’t think this is the school for me.”

Somehow, Imayoshi felt insulted.

i'm kind of fuzzy on the timeline and i wrote this at work so there's probably a bunch of errors about their past

***

Renji runs his fingers over the cover of the binder. RENJI, its labeled, in what is unmistakably Sadaharu's writing. He pauses for a second, letting his fingers run across its well-worn spine. He usually disapproves of this, looking at secondhand data, instead preferring to collect it himself, but curiosity gets the best of him as he flips open the cover.

Today the professor and I learned about "data tennis" from a senpai. He said that we should keep notebooks filled with data so that we can better analyze our opponents' moves. I'm not sure who we're going to be playing in Hawaii, so I'm going to start by compiling data on Renji so that we can play together better.

Renji suppresses a small smile. That explains the thickness of the binder, filled with multiple spiral bound notebooks. He flips to the second notebook, curious to see what data Sadaharu had managed to compile about his younger self.

He appears to have skipped too far. The handwriting is slightly shaky.

Why did he leave? Why didn't he tell me where he was moving? I thought that we were better friends than that.

Probability that he has something to hide from me: 83%
Probability that he wishes to maintain contact with me: 0.8%

He flips about a third of the way through the notebook.

Renji didn't give me his new landline and he didn't have a cell phone. He didn't give me his new address and he won't answer any of my e-mails.

Oh. Renji had made a new e-mail address shortly after he had moved and had never bothered to check his old one. He figured that ryanagi93 was more professional than tennisprofessor3000.

Probability that he wishes to maintain contact with me: 0%
Probability that he no longer wants to be friends with me: 99.8%

Renji feels something clench deep within him. It was his fault, he knew, but that didn't mean that he couldn't regret it. He flips further through the second notebook. The rest of it is blank. The remaining three notebooks look much newer, much shinier. He opens to the first page of the third notebook. It states simply, in Sadaharu's neat handwriting:

He's back.

He flips back and forth through the notebook, but it's all data from his three years at Rikkai, all things that he knows already, without any of the insights he's searching for. He flips to the back of the final notebook.

Data collection requires impartiality and I am afraid that I'm no longer able to maintain it in this case. I snuck up on Rikkai's practice today—

Renji glances at the date of the entry. He hadn't noticed Sadaharu's presence.

—and I could not properly focus on collecting data. I had meant to collect more data on Kirihara and other underclassmen, as a parting gift to the tennis club, but I couldn't tear my eyes off of Renji. It wasn't even because I was analyzing his moves.

Probability that my personal feelings are beginning to interfere with my data collection: 74%

I can't help but focus on every detail about him, about the rise and fall of his chest, about the exact angle he tilts his head back when he drinks water, about the frequency with which he wipes sweat off of his forehead, about how many centimeters he unzips his jacket by.

Renji opens his eyes.

Probability that I'm in love: 100%

the water's--
vast, still, endless--
cold.
(i've never been so alone.)

it's dark here.
dark and empty,
like something's missing.
gray, except--

red.
bright, brilliant red,
tied around my fingers.
endless, but a direction.

a guide:
(how to find you)

no guarantee,
no promises.
but hope.
hope in all the darkness.

i don't know
what i'll find
or where this will lead me.
but it might be to you.

(after so long,
if it's you,
i'll take any direction,
any hint i can get.)

because we always find our way
back to each other.
in the end.
(until the end.)
