Bonus Round 1: Memory

Bonus Round 1: Memory

Let's start our summer by looking at the past—things that happened in canon, or maybe in an AU, or maybe just as wishful thinking...

This round is CLOSED as of 7PM on June 9 EDT. Late fills may be posted, but they will not receive points.

Please read this whole post before commenting to ensure that your team gets the most points possible. (There are changes from last year!)

RULES
  • Submit prompts by commenting to this post! You prompt should consist of one scenario beginning with the phrase "Remember when", along with any ship/ot3/etc. from our list of nominated fandoms.
    • Your prompts can take the form of recalling canon facts/events ("Remember when Nozomi and Eli got parfaits after school?"), non-canon events ("Remember when Megumi and Jin met at the Tadokoro Family Reunion?"), or somewhere in-between ("Remember when Bokuto and Kenma first met?"). Headcanons and AUs are welcome!
    • Your prompt MUST include some kind of relationship. (This is not the sports anime gen olympics.) Platonic relationships are indicated by an "&" between the names (e.g., Rei & Nagisa). Non-platonic relationships use "/" (e.g., Rei/Nagisa). Please don't say "Any pairing," either!
  • Post fills by leaving a responding comment to a prompt with your newly-created work.
  • Remember to follow the general bonus round rules, outlined here.

    • Replace [YOUR SHIP] with the name of the team you belong to, including Grandstand or Sports Teams
    • Place the prompt's relationship in the first bolded line of the comment. Including the canon isn't required, but it's nice.
    • Below that, place applicable major content tags (when applicable; otherwise write "no tags" or "none")
    • Visual example

Posts not using this format will be understood to be unofficial discussion posts, regardless of what they contain. They, like all comments in this community, are subject to the code of conduct.

    SCORING
These numbers apply to your team as a whole, not each individual teammate. Make as many prompts/fills as you want!

For prompts: 5 points each (maximum of 50 prompt points per team per round)

    For fills:

First 3 fills by any member of your team: 20 points each
    Fills 4-10: 10 points each
    Fills 11-20: 5 points each
    Fills 21+: 2 points each

All scored content must be created new for this round.

    Etc.
If you're hunting through the prompts looking for what to fill, a good trick is to view top-level comments only.

Have a question? Check The FAQ first. If you still need help, feel free to contact the mods. Happy fanworking!

Tags: None applicable! SORRY LIRA I HAVENT WATCHED PINGPONG BUT i really fucking love mitani. though my other problem is i haven't read hng in a year and i've never written hikago so who knows about my characterization, but. i can't pass up a chance for bitter uncomfortable mitani.
Word count: 1006

The ticker tape familiarity of stones from bowl to board keep Mitani's mind where it is supposed to be. With no one at the bar, he finds it several meters further down than he would like. Cold tea stopped helping much after the first hour out of Golden Week. But strangers always come around most after lunch, before dinner, the quiet zone of no man's land that made up 3 p.m.

A drink and searching eyes, blatantly sporty. Mitani snorts at the jersey adorned by brand and school. No pockets - but as he walks past, he draws a hand along tables and chairs, before pausing at an empty seat. A recently vacated board. Mitani gets impatient.

"You gamble much?"

The stranger's fingers jolt away from stones, before calming. "What?" His palms catch when he rubs his hands together, near negligible. "Nah," he says, "Or I guess it depends on what you'd call gambling."

"That so?" Mitani drawls, peering upward. "We don't have to use such unsophisticated words if it makes you uncomfortable."

It's been a long time since he opened like that. Akari would never let him hear the end of it if she knew - but strangers make him do foolish things. He'd learned well enough how dangerous adults were. Enough that he found himself curling up and away any time it got late enough for them to come out in droves. Someone his age, however. He allows a sly smile to cross his face.

A hand in his face - he's forward. Mitani takes it, as an opening. "The name's Teshima. I was just ... looking. I didn't realize this bar would have much of a game scene."

Calluses betray enough, even with carefully cut nails. A stranger without the hands for Go. "Every bar does," Mitani says, only putting in enough effort to be half-scathing. "You must not come at the right times."

"Have I come at the right time today?" Teshima's quick - a fancy shake of his head, already sitting down in the opposite chair. "I learned a bit about this back in junior high. White goes first, right?"

"Mhm," Mitani hums. He doesn't move from his bored slouch. Eyes flickering between hands and the door's bell, he waits for someone to interrupt.

But no one comes in, and Teshima says, "Then I'll take black."

He says it like there's a story behind it. Mitani resolves not to ask. He takes white before telling him, "The komi difference probably won't help you much."

"Thanks," he says. "Glad to have that confirmation."

Mitani makes the first move and says, "How much do you plan to put down."

"Smooth," Teshima says, completely unnecessary. "If I say ... what, a thousand yen? You won't act like it's dollars, will you?" He makes the second, after staring at the board. Right at the center. Not a clue what he was doing.

"You're cheaper than I expected."

Grimace of a smile, he answers, "Gambling isn't just about money."

Another story desperate to be told. Mitani taps a finger along with the next click of white. The last time he met someone this stupid - he bites the inside of his cheek when Teshima puts down the next. Hikaru was gone. He isn't interested in that mess anymore.

Someone like that happens once in a life-time and the rest of them are left to this.

"Where do you go to school?"

"Here," Mitani says, flat.

"I biked over from Chiba." White begins to overtake the board. It would go faster if Teshima didn't ponder every move for so long, even with the childish mistakes Mitani sees himself making. "It was a bit rougher on me than I'd expected, so I figured I'd take a break."

Probably the southern peninsula. He didn't have a clue about cycling. "Is that so." It sounds a little difficult, at least. "You should have brought company." If it meant he wouldn't have needed to waste his time on such a small bet.

At that, Teshima laughs. "I couldn't bother them with this." A stone clicking. "They don't need me dragging them down with extra practice." And another - Mitani loses track of whose. More form and more are taken, but through the clatter, he says, "A captain should be better than that."

"I didn't ask for your life story," Mitani spits.

Ticker tape falls silent. It hadn't helped here at all.

"Right," Teshima says.

With the next stone, Mitani makes to close.

"Do you plan to forfeit?" He gestures to the board. "You might not be able to see, but there's no way to come back from this." A challenge in his smile, he can't make it go anywhere good. "It'd take a miracle."

Lips pursed, Teshima rolls his head back. "A miracle?" Knuckles crack. "I'll take my chances."

"For a thousand yen?"

"Doesn't have to be about money," he echoes.

Pride. Mitani tries not to chew on his thumb as the game goes on, discomfort rising high in his chest. Going on with a game when it was pointless to win. Staying here when anyone knows you'll never take the top. Going on when you'd been rejected by the person who had asked you to stay. It comes out and -

"After the komi difference," he mutters, "White wins by ten."

Teshima's hovering over the back of his seat now, all the ease of access to see Mitani's white knuckles. "Guess it wasn't close at all."

Too close. "It took a miracle."

"I wouldn't know if I didn't try," he says. "Thanks for the game." A bill placed at his side - Mitani doesn't take it. Teshima flicks open a phone. "But it looks like I should get on my way." He goes on, almost too quiet to hear. "Appreciate you putting up with me."

Mitani focuses on the clatter of stones back home over steps and an empty bell.

Hands enough for Go - it isn't like he has such a thing, either.

On his phone are the usual texts from Akari.

Are you out alone at one of those bars again? Worried and nosy. Why do you never let me come with you?
