Bonus Round 1: Memory

Bonus Round 1: Memory

Let's start our summer by looking at the past—things that happened in canon, or maybe in an AU, or maybe just as wishful thinking...

This round is CLOSED as of 7PM on June 9 EDT. Late fills may be posted, but they will not receive points.

Please read this whole post before commenting to ensure that your team gets the most points possible. (There are changes from last year!)

RULES
  • Submit prompts by commenting to this post! You prompt should consist of one scenario beginning with the phrase "Remember when", along with any ship/ot3/etc. from our list of nominated fandoms.
    • Your prompts can take the form of recalling canon facts/events ("Remember when Nozomi and Eli got parfaits after school?"), non-canon events ("Remember when Megumi and Jin met at the Tadokoro Family Reunion?"), or somewhere in-between ("Remember when Bokuto and Kenma first met?"). Headcanons and AUs are welcome!
    • Your prompt MUST include some kind of relationship. (This is not the sports anime gen olympics.) Platonic relationships are indicated by an "&" between the names (e.g., Rei & Nagisa). Non-platonic relationships use "/" (e.g., Rei/Nagisa). Please don't say "Any pairing," either!
  • Post fills by leaving a responding comment to a prompt with your newly-created work.
  • Remember to follow the general bonus round rules, outlined here.

    SCORING
These numbers apply to your team as a whole, not each individual teammate. Make as many prompts/fills as you want!

For prompts: 5 points each (maximum of 50 prompt points per team per round)

    For fills:

First 3 fills by any member of your team: 20 points each
    Fills 4-10: 10 points each
    Fills 11-20: 5 points each
    Fills 21+: 2 points each

All scored content must be created new for this round.

    Etc.
If you're hunting through the prompts looking for what to fill, a good trick is to view top-level comments only.

Have a question? Check The FAQ first. If you still need help, feel free to contact the mods. Happy fanworking!

Losing hurt. Training together for countless hours, perfecting their teamwork, and still losing to the new first-years hurt. Falling from their bikes when their bodies refused to go any farther, and then being picked up by Tadokoro when they could no longer walk themselves hurt. Tadokoro holding them the next morning as Kinjou massaged the worst of the knots out of their bruised and sore muscles hurt.

But none of that hurt as much as the day a couple of months later when they learned they would never ride competitively again.

They had been doing everything the physical therapist at the training camp had recommended, and everything Mr. Pierre had ordered later, but even weeks later, their injuries hadn't healed, and they still couldn't make it through even the shortest and lightest of the team's practices. One afternoon, Kinjou declared that enough was enough, and after practice he ordered Tadokoro to get his family's truck. Teshima and Aoyagi sat nervously in the backseat as Kinjou gave Tadokoro directions to the specialist who had treated his knee.

When they arrived, they were directed to separate rooms where they were put through a seemingly endless battery of tests that left their legs as sore as the first night. Then, they limped back to the waiting room to rejoin Tadokoro and Kinjou.

The minute the doctor came out and pulled Kinjou aside, Teshima knew the results weren't good, a conclusion that was confirmed when she brought all four of them into a small conference room and explained that both Aoyagi and Teshima had done irreparable soft-tissue damage to their legs. With enough physical therapy, they would be able to ride again if they wanted, but never at a competitive level.

After delivering the news, she left, leaving the four cyclists alone to process. Tadokoro immediately swept both of them into a tight bear hug, crying into the tops of their heads. Aoyagi and Teshima cried too, their dreams of ever riding in the Interhigh abruptly ended. Kinjou stood in the corner watching them, his face stoic as ever. Only those who had ridden with him would have seen the sadness and guilt hidden underneath it.

It fell to Teshima to convince everyone that he and Aoyagi really would be okay. No, they couldn't ride with the team anymore, but they could still come watch practice and go to the races to cheer on the team, and he and Aoyagi would find a different activity to do together.

Most of the time, Teshima was good at that, and sometimes he could almost start to believe himself. But when he was alone with his thoughts at night, he struggled to maintain that facade, and he often found himself sneaking over to Aoyagi's in the wee hours of the morning, the trip taking far longer than it had before. Aoyagi would always be waiting for him when he arrived, quietly letting him into the house and into his bedroom. Aoyagi would hold him as he cried, running fingers through his unruly curls until he finally exhausted himself enough to sleep.

Aoyagi let him grieve for a month, until one night when Teshima came over, and Aoyagi pressed something soft and stiff into his hand. Teshima looked down, and even in the darkness, he recognized his cycling glove. He had thrown it out in anger when he learned they would never compete again, but apparently Aoyagi had saved it for him.

Aoyagi slipped the glove onto Teshima's hand before holding up his half of the set next to it.

"Certain Victory," Teshima said bitterly. "Victory at what? Failure?"

Aoyagi squeezed his hand hard, cutting him off before he could launch into his whole tirade. Aoyagi told him it was time to move on, and as much as he wanted to be bitter about what had happened, he trusted Aoyagi.

And maybe Aoyagi was right. Maybe the end of cycling didn't have to mean the end of them. Maybe they could find a new place for themselves. He pressed his fist to Aoyagi's.

"Team of Two," he promised.

"Forever," Aoyagi replied.

Note: I love T2, I really do, and I want them to be all domestic and fluffy and happy, but then things like this happen. I blame the prompt.
