Bonus Round 3: Gift Tags

Bonus Round 3: Gift Tags

Feeling generous? In this round, you get to give creative gifts as prompts.

This round is CLOSED as of 7PM on July 7 EDT. Late fills may be posted, but they will not receive points.

  • Submit prompts as a gift tag in the format below. You can specify the size and a characteristic of the gift, who the sender is, who the recipient is, and a one or two sentence note from the sender to the recipient. Descriptions of the package and the included note don’t have to be explicit, see below.
    • Package: medium sized cube, rattles
      From: Kageyama Tobio
      To: Hinata Shouyou
Note: These will help you get better.
    • Envelope: manila, 12''x17'', very thick and heavy
      From: Tezuka Kunimitsu
      To: Kinjou Shingo
Note: Enclosed - Play without regrets!
  • Your prompt MUST include a relationship. Platonic relationships are indicated by an "&" between the names (e.g., Riko & Momoi). Non-platonic relationships use "/" (e.g., Riko/Momoi). Please don't say "Any pairing," either.
  • Fill prompts by leaving a responding comment to the prompt with your newly-created work. Fillers can get creative with how to interpret the prompt: your fill can be about the character receiving the gift, one or both characters using the gift, what prompted the sender to send the gift—the physical gift itself can even be excluded from your fill. What’s important is that the gift tag is clearly the inspiration for your fill.
  • Remember to follow the general bonus round rules, outlined here.

Bonus round shenanigans all happen in the comments below. Brand-new works only, please.

Required Work Minimums:
  • 400 words (prose)
  • 400px by 400px (art)
  • 14 lines (poetry)
There is no max work cap.

Format your comment in one of the following ways:

  • Replace [YOUR SHIP] with the name of the team you belong to, including Grandstand or Sports Teams
  • Place the prompt's relationship in the first bolded line of the comment. Including the canon isn't required, but it's nice.
  • Below that, place applicable major content tags (when applicable; otherwise write "no tags" or "none")
  • Visual example
  • Replace [YOUR SHIP] with the name of the team you belong to
  • Replace RATING with the rating of your fill (G - E)
  • Place applicable major content tags and word count before your fill (when applicable)
  • NSFW FILLS: Please cross-link these fills and use clear tags in your comment. Written/text fills should be hosted at AO3 ONLY as a new, unchaptered work. Art/visual fills can be hosted anywhere. You may include a small safe-for-work preview of the fill in your comment.
  • To place an image in your comment, use this code: <img src="LINK TO YOUR IMAGE" alt="DESCRIPTION OF YOUR IMAGE"/>
  • Visual example
  • Replace RATING with the rating of your fill, G - E, as explained in the rules
  • Place applicable major content tags and word count before the fill, where applicable
  • NSFW FILLS: Please cross-link these fills and use clear tags in your comment. Written/text fills should be hosted at AO3 ONLY as a new, unchaptered work. Art/visual fills can be hosted anywhere. You may include a small safe-for-work preview of your work in your comment.

Posts not using this format will be understood to be unofficial discussion posts, regardless of what they contain. They, like all comments in this community, are subject to the code of conduct.

These numbers apply to your team as a whole, not each individual teammate. Make as many prompts/fills as you want!

For prompts: 5 points each (maximum of 50 prompt points per team per round)

For fills:

First 3 fills by any member of your team: 20 points each
Fills 4-10: 10 points each
Fills 11-20: 5 points each
Fills 21+: 2 points each

All scored content must be created new for this round.

If you're hunting through the prompts looking for what to fill, a good trick is to view top-level comments only.

Spoilers for Season 1. 771 words

Kazuki leaves practice too quickly. He doesn’t mean to, and he knows he shouldn’t. But it’s hard to laugh and joke alongside your teammates when your throat feels like you’ve just swallowed glass.

Every minute in practice is a reminder that this is the end. Tosei will not be returning to Koshien. Soon Kazuki will no longer even be at Tosei. His last year and he had captained his team to a first round elimination.

None of his teammates said anything to him about the loss, of course. Not even Junta, who now pitched to Riou instead of Kazuki. The two of them were practicing intensely, and Kazuki had spent the day trying to guide them. Riou wasn’t a bad cathcer, not by a long shot, but privately Kazuki had found himself thinking that they had a long way to go. Riou was too prone to self-doubt. He would shuffle his feet or move the glove too much, and Junta would pick up on his nerves and pitch slower than he should. Kazuki tried his best to talk Riou through it, but he couldn’t help but think about all the years that he and Junta had spent playing together. Kazuki had come to learn about Junta during those times, all his quirks, what brought out the best in him and what brought out the worst. Junta knew how to read him, and he knew how to read Junta.

But Riou did not, and now Kazuki had only the rest of the summer to teach him. How to give advice, when the connection he had with Junta had taken years to form?

How to give advice, when as a captain you’d just let down your entire team with a devastatingly close loss to a team of freshmen?

No, Kazuki does not linger after practice ended. Those questions nip at his heels. And Kazuki knows they are easier to ignore the further he gets form the field.

The further he gets from Junta.

When he gets home, he eats, he showers, and spends too long playing a mindless videogame with his headphones in and the sound blasting. His parents have started to ask him, gently but insistently, about his plans for college. Kazuki wishes they wouldn’t.

It is dark by the time he wanders back downstairs. Both his parents have gone to bed. He should probably get some sleep too, soon, if he wants to be well-rested for school and practice tomorrow. But as he is grabbing himself a late snack, he catches a strange box lying on the kitchen counter.

He looks again, and sees it is lying on top of a piece of paper. On it, in his mother’s handwriting, reads:

Kazuki – Junta stopped by. He said you left this at practice. Tried calling you down but you must have been busy.

Kazuki can hear the reproach in her words. He knows how she would have spoken the message to him. The disappointment would not have been at the foreground – she knows too well how the loss has upset him – but it would be there, nonetheless. Kazuki feels a sudden wave of guilt. It had been a very rude thing to do, to lock himself away when someone has stopped by to see him.

And then he thinks of Junta. Had he stayed, waiting to see if Kazuki would come down and see him? Or, like Kazuki himself, had he stayed no longer than was necessary?

All at once he realizes that he did not know. He had spent the day congratulating himself quietly that he knew Junta better than Riou did, and yet now he was at an utter loss as to how Junta probably responded to being at his house.

Kazuki opens the box. Delicately packed inside is his phone. Kazuki just stares blankly at it. He’s never left his phone at practice before. It’s a stupid thing to do. A careless thing to do. The kind of mistake you made when you were in a rush.

It merely blinks silently back at him.

He has a new message.

He checks: he actually has two new messages. They are both from Junta.

“I miss you,” comes the first message.

“I miss talking to you,” reads the second.

The words are a quick punch to the gut. Kazuki feels the breath leaving his lungs. He feels his stomach turn itself into knots.

Kazuki had thought it hurt to see his teammates again. He hadn’t realized how much he has been hurting them.

How much he has been hurting Junta.

"I’m sorry Junta," he responds, "I’ll be back at practice tomorrow."
