Bonus Round 3: Gift Tags

Bonus Round 3: Gift Tags

Feeling generous? In this round, you get to give creative gifts as prompts.

This round is CLOSED as of 7PM on July 7 EDT. Late fills may be posted, but they will not receive points.

RULES
  • Submit prompts as a gift tag in the format below. You can specify the size and a characteristic of the gift, who the sender is, who the recipient is, and a one or two sentence note from the sender to the recipient. Descriptions of the package and the included note don’t have to be explicit, see below.
    • Package: medium sized cube, rattles
      From: Kageyama Tobio
      To: Hinata Shouyou
Note: These will help you get better.
    • Envelope: manila, 12''x17'', very thick and heavy
      From: Tezuka Kunimitsu
      To: Kinjou Shingo
Note: Enclosed - Play without regrets!
  • Your prompt MUST include a relationship. Platonic relationships are indicated by an "&" between the names (e.g., Riko & Momoi). Non-platonic relationships use "/" (e.g., Riko/Momoi). Please don't say "Any pairing," either.
  • Fill prompts by leaving a responding comment to the prompt with your newly-created work. Fillers can get creative with how to interpret the prompt: your fill can be about the character receiving the gift, one or both characters using the gift, what prompted the sender to send the gift—the physical gift itself can even be excluded from your fill. What’s important is that the gift tag is clearly the inspiration for your fill.
  • Remember to follow the general bonus round rules, outlined here.

Prompt: Team Grandstand

Arakita Yasutomo &/ Toudou Jinpachi, Yowamushi Pedal
Supernatural Elements (Werewolves)

Package: A new set of clothes left under the porch of the Toudou family ryokan.
To: The werewolf who keeps changing under the porch
Note: Those clothes can't be comfortable, or warm. Also, they're too ragged and you keep scaring our guests. Please use these instead; I have it on good authority that they're the latest trends. (P.S. I have tea in the back garden every night if you're ever looking for company)

supernatural elements (werewolves, witches)

No one knew that the ryokan was run by a coven. Even Arakita had been unaware that he was hiding under a witch’s front porch before the package appeared one autumn night, permeated with the warm, peppery smell of magic. The note on it was friendly—

But Arakita did not trust it. He did not trust anyone, especially after they invaded his space and took his things.

In his anger, he acted rashly. It was easy enough to get into the back garden—he cleared the wooden fence in one leap, and landed in a patch of soft, cool grass. The smell of magic was even stronger here, where the witches sang to their plants to make them grow lush and charmed the koi fish to dazzle the ryokan guests.

One of the witches sat on a carved stone bench on the in the center of the garden, partially hidden by the low-hanging branches of a weeping willow. A tray with a clay teapot and two teacups sat beside him. He had hair like black ink solidified, and when he turned his head towards Arakita, the silver ornaments in his hair jingled.

He smiled at Arakita, showing bright white teeth.

“You got my note,” he said. Arakita knew his name—he had signed the note in big, bold letters.

“You stole my things.”

“I replaced them. I couldn’t let you run around in those rags you call clothes. It isn’t good for my ryokan’s image.”

Arakita snarled.

“Stay out of my space.”

Your space?” Toudou laughed.“My family has owned this land for generations. Technically, you are trespassing.”

“I can go wherever I want,” Arakita said, in a voice that made most people tremble. But Toudou’s smile never faltered. His eyes, bottomless and iridescent in the moonlight, followed Arakita as he prowled along the edge of the garden.

“Only because I let you.”

Something in his voice made the back of Arakita’s neck prickle, even though his smile was as pleasant as ever. Arakita wanted to turn and flee the garden and never come back, but he didn’t. He stood there and stared at Toudou.

“Come and sit with me,” Toudou said.

“Never,” said Arakita.

Still, he did not move.

Toudou picked up the clay pot and poured himself a cup of fragrant chamomile tea. He inclined his head towards Arakita, making the ornaments in his hair jingle again.

“Oh, you will,” he said pleasantly, and took a long sip of tea.

The scent of magic was stronger than ever.

Mmmm, this was a lovely fill. Thank you. I love the darker/dangerous side of Toudou that's coming out here, and how easily he starts pulling Arakita in. I know Makishima's normally the spider, but that's what Toudou reminded me of here.

Word count:: 554
Nudity, vague body horror

“Arakita?”

The voice stops Arakita in his tracks. His entire body freezes up, still half-running on animal instincts that say if he stays still, he won’t be seen.

Except he knows he’s been seen, now, instincts be damned, he’s not stupid. He feels his bones crack and hears the faint snapping and creaking as everything pops back into its human place. It hurts, like it always does, but he’s almost used to the pain, now. Almost.

“Arakita,” Toudou says again, and Arakita winces. “That is you.”

“Yeah, well,” Arakita says in a voice rough from a sleepless night spent screaming and howling as a monster. His toes shrink and his foot changes shape and he winces, trying his best not to whimper.

“What are you -- why are you under my porch?”

Arakita half laughs, half groans. “Good to see you too,” he mutters, and commences the slow process of crawling out from under the porch on malformed limbs. He’d be embarrassed, if he had enough energy for such an emotion, but he’s exhausted, and hurting, and he just wants to find somewhere to curl up and sleep off what he’s somewhat sarcastically dubbed his “werewolf hangover.”

Toudou’s chattering away, because of course he is, at the ass-crack of dawn with an old classmate discovered under his porch. “-- hard to believe it’s been so long, really, and you don’t have to sneak around, we have plenty of rooms and you know I’d love to have you -- oh my god, Arakita! What happened?

The overhead light flicks on, cutting through the dawn half-light and making Arakita growl instinctively. His lips curl back just in time for him to feel the grinding shift of his wolf fangs retracting into his skull and flattening into small, harmless human teeth.

Toudou is staring at him in what can only be described as abject horror, and as awful as he feels Arakita can’t bring himself to react with more than a weak scowl. He’s uncomfortably aware that he’s naked and thinner than he’s ever been and covered in scrapes and bruises and gashes and dirt. And he doesn’t know how to explain it, can’t get his mind to work when it’s still muddled up with the wolf. He knows he had a plan, once, some kind of story for when Toudou or his family inevitably caught him trespassing -- but it’s gone, now, lost somewhere in the mountains, and the truth is, Arakita keeps coming back here because it’s safe and smells familiar and sometimes, he can curl up behind the steam-heated rocks for a nap.

“I…” he says, and then he has to stop. He doesn’t know what to say. He doesn’t know how to explain what has happened to him, since they all finished high school together. He can’t find the words and instead, he just shakes his head.

He hears Toudou take a breath in -- it’s a familiar sound, Toudou always breathes deep before launching into a lecture, and Arakita braces himself.

“Okay,” Toudou says simply. “Come inside. You need a bath. I’ll find you some clothes and whip up something to eat while you’re cleaning up and then we can talk.”

Toudou opens the door and steps back, holding it in an open, unconditional invitation, and Arakita follows him inside on shaky legs.

Thank you for the fill! I love how you wrote Arakita's mind here with its mix of wolf and human and Arakita trying to pull a coherent train of thought out of it anyway somehow until he finally gives in. And also how it looks like Toudou's about to start lecturing/interrogating, and Arakita's trying to gear up in response, and then suddenly they're not, and the door is open. And I also really liked how you described the body horror aspects of the transformation. Thanks again for a lovely fill.
