Bonus Round 4: Quotes

Bonus Round 4: Quotes

A shipping olympics favorite, this round uses quotes of all sorts to fuel your creative endeavors.

This round is CLOSED as of 7PM on July 21 EDT. Late fills may be posted, but they will not receive points.

RULES
  • Submit prompts by commenting to this post with a quote attributed to a specific person or character, along with any ship/ot3/etc. from one of our nominated fandoms.
    • Example: "You must be the change you wish to see in the world." - M. Gandhi
    • The quote can come from anywhere. Famous people, poetry, songs, books, movies, your neighbor, etc.
    • Your prompt MUST include some kind of relationship. (This is not the sports anime gen olympics.) Platonic relationships are indicated by an "&" between the names (e.g., Makoto & Rin). Non-platonic relationships use "/" (e.g., Makoto/Rin). Please don't say "Any pairing," either!
  • Fill prompts by replying to the prompt with your quote-inspired fanwork.
  • Remember to follow the general bonus round rules, outlined here.

Shinobu doesn't think that she's ever witnessed warmth and radiance like this anywhere else.

There are poems written about it, of course. She thinks of the autumn verses when she looks at Chihaya, and people have always marvelled at the way the words of the hundred poets resonate even in modern day, but Shinobu has never felt it quite as much as she does now.

Chihaya could be the summer, burning hot with the determination that makes her stand out against most of Shinobu's other opponents, but the summer is too hot, too unpleasant for extended periods of time. Chihaya is not that.

She could be the spring, full of energy and growth, but even that doesn't fit quite the way that it should. She isn't that green, she isn't stumbling to find her feet; she's standing on solid ground, and working out where she wants to go from there.

Chihaya is the autumn. Just as the trees of an orchard are in full bloom, weighed down with fruits ready for harvest, Chihaya is full of all the things that she has trained herself for; she has technique, strategy, a love for the game. She's so full of everything that she can barely contain it. Her karuta itself is energetic, like she has so much of it that she needs to share it, and Shinobu has learned to stop disdaining that, when she can see just how far it's letting Chihaya progress.

Shinobu herself is the winter, cold and silent and forbidding. She freezes out all those who will stand in her way and there is no amount of warmth that can beat her. Not even the fire that burns within Chihaya. She is the stillness of a frozen lake, and wears her smile the way that the trees wear frost.

She won't allow herself to be beaten, and she can't be, with small, weak attempts. Technique by itself is nothing. Talent is nothing. A love for the game is nothing.

With all of them combined, however, Chihaya makes a worthwhile opponent. Not an equal, because Shinobu doesn't have anyone she would consider as such, but someone who makes their games enjoyable.

That in itself is enough of a miracle, Shinobu thinks with a wry smile.

They kneel opposite each other, bowing their heads as they lay out the cards in front of them, and Shinobu finds that she is excited. She's decided that she isn't going to let Chihaya take any cards from her at all today, but unlike other opponents, she knows that it isn't going to be easy, that Chihaya isn't going to give up.

Shinobu will outlast her, though. After all, the autumn always fades into winter.
