Bonus Round 4: Quotes

Bonus Round 4: Quotes

A shipping olympics favorite, this round uses quotes of all sorts to fuel your creative endeavors.

This round is CLOSED as of 7PM on July 21 EDT. Late fills may be posted, but they will not receive points.

  • Submit prompts by commenting to this post with a quote attributed to a specific person or character, along with any ship/ot3/etc. from one of our nominated fandoms.
    • Example: "You must be the change you wish to see in the world." - M. Gandhi
    • The quote can come from anywhere. Famous people, poetry, songs, books, movies, your neighbor, etc.
    • Your prompt MUST include some kind of relationship. (This is not the sports anime gen olympics.) Platonic relationships are indicated by an "&" between the names (e.g., Makoto & Rin). Non-platonic relationships use "/" (e.g., Makoto/Rin). Please don't say "Any pairing," either!
  • Fill prompts by replying to the prompt with your quote-inspired fanwork.
  • Remember to follow the general bonus round rules, outlined here.

Bonus round shenanigans all happen in the comments below. Brand-new works only, please.

Required Work Minimums:
  • 400 words (prose)
  • 400px by 400px (art)

There is no max work cap.

Format your comment in one of the following ways:

  • Replace [YOUR SHIP] with the name of the team you belong to, including Grandstand or Sports Teams
  • Place the prompt's relationship in the first bolded line of the comment. Including the canon isn't required, but it's nice.
  • Below that, place applicable major content tags (when applicable; otherwise write "no tags" or "none")
  • Visual example
  • Replace [YOUR SHIP] with the name of the team you belong to
  • Replace RATING with the rating of your fill (G - E)

Posts not using this format will be understood to be unofficial discussion posts, regardless of what they contain. They, like all comments in this community, are subject to the code of conduct.

These numbers apply to your team as a whole, not each individual teammate. Make as many prompts/fills as you want!

For prompts: 5 points each (maximum of 50 prompt points per team per round)

For fills:

First 3 fills by any member of your team: 20 points each
Fills 4-10: 10 points each
Fills 11-20: 5 points each
Fills 21+: 2 points each

All scored content must be created new for this round.

If you're hunting through the prompts looking for what to fill, a good trick is to view top-level comments only.

eat me lira

(There is no writing on the small, simple packaging. Against her better judgement, she opens it anyway, pulling out the little card to see what it had to say.

"Truly, this is where
Travelers who go or come
Over parting ways--
Friends or strangers--all must meet:
The gate of "Meeting Hill."

Kana supposes something like this was bound to happen to her. There are only so many outcomes that occur when one works so closely with the underground, so many which could've been far, far worse.

She just should've seen it coming instead of letting it blindside her like this.

(One card begets two, three, and Kana simply wishes she knew where they were coming from so she could return the favor.

After the fourth card, she decides she's going to find out, closing her tattoo parlour and waiting inside to see who is leaving the unmarked letters.

Its only eleven when another letter is slid under the doorframe.

She wastes no time throwing it open, and finds Kataoka.

Somehow, she's not surprised.)

The best feature of Kataoka's apartment are the floor to ceiling windows, giving her the view of the city unlike any other. Today the sun greets her through the windows,as she rolls out of bed, throwing on one of her boyfriend's shirts.

He's not here today, either. She isn't sure she remembers the last time she's seen his face.

She makes tea.

(Once, when he was sent across the country for business, she received a card in the mail.

"When I look up at
The wide-stretched plain of heaven,
Is the moon the same
That rose on Mount Mikasa
In the land of Kasuga?

It took her two hours to stop smiling.)

The commute is longer, but she doesn't mind sacrificing a little sleep when she knows the tattoo she's putting on this morning. She was a nice young woman, her age, animated and different from her normal customers. It'll be a nice change, and help take some of the ache off her mind.

(Kana feels bad for giggling, but Tesshin is a terrible kisser.

"I haven't had a lot of practice." he says as he pulls back, and Kana can't keep laughing at such earnestness.

"Then, I'll have to make sure you get plenty more.")

The second she steps off the train she smells smoke, and not the kind from a cigarette.

Her heart pounds against her chest as she walks down the street, trying to tell herself it's probably nothing, but the smell only gets thicker the closer and closer she gets to her store. Hers. The one her mother gave her, the one she worked at and trained in ever since she was a child, where she had her first drink, where everything for her started and --

(They fit together like some higher powered engineered it so that there was no excess space between them when she rested her cheek against his shoulder and his arm was around her waist.

There's only the shared sound of them catching their breath, but even that dies down as they relax, the little apartment silent once again.

She knows she's taking a risk here, but when it comes to Tesshin, Kana takes plenty of them, so what's one more?

"I have met my love.
When I compare this present
With feelings of the past,
My passion is now as if
I have never loved before.

-- she watches it burn to the ground.

Kataoka returns to his apartment, throwing his ash-covered clothes in the trash, he finds an envelope with small, simple packaging.

Inside, he pulls out a small card with fiery red print.

"Like a driven wave,
Dashed by fierce winds on a rock,
So am I: alone
And crushed upon the shore,
Remembering what has been.

He thinks about returning the card, but instead he waits for her at her apartment. He knows why she will not return to his.

"Why are you here, Kataoka?" she says in the most professional tone that shaves away their history.

He tries to do the same, but knows he fails. "To talk about what happened."

Her fingers clench into fists at her side, teeth gritted. "Do you really have anything to say to me about that? Do you?"

"No!" She shouts, and it's as if simply by him being in her presence it's flipped the switch to send her eyes ablaze with rage, hands reaching up to grab at his collar and shake him. "That was my home! All of the history there, gone, just like that, and you, you knew about it, is that why you were avoiding me?!"

Kataoka didn't realize he had so little to say.

"I'm sorry."

Kana slaps him hard enough to crack his lip.

"If you're sorry, then bring whoever did this to justice. Now get out of my building."

( Of all the cards he gave her, there was only one he gave her face to face.

"It's your card." Tesshin says with the shyest of smiles, eyes looking at the set of keys to his apartment attached to it. "I thought I'd save it for something special." )

The second time she sees the card, it's on a large cardboard box at her doorstep. She doesn't know what it's inside, but she recognizes that distinct metallic smell that fills the air.

"By Oe Mountain
The road to Ikuno
Is far away,
And neither have I beheld
Nor crossed its bridge of heaven.
