Bonus Round 5: Myth & Lore

Bonus Round 5: Myth & Lore

Summer's a time for swapping stories around the campfire. With that in mind, this round draws inspiration from the stories humanity have told each other over the centuries.

This round is CLOSED as of 7PM on August 4 EDT. Late fills may be posted, but they will not receive points.

  • This round does not have prompts. Instead, we ask you to draw inspiration from the wide pool of mythology, fantasy, folklore, and fable. An urban fantasy or supernatural AU? A re-imagining of your favorite folk tale? Characters swapping ghost stories or playing D&D? As long as your fill in some way incorporates the fantastical and/or supernatural, it's welcome here.
  • Your fill still has to be about a ship from one of our nominated fandoms. What ships you create work for is up to you, though.
  • To submit your fill, simply leave it as a comment as a reply to this post.
  • Remember to follow the general bonus round rules, outlined here.

Bonus round shenanigans all happen in the comments below. Brand-new works only, please.

Required Work Minimums:
  • 400 words (prose)
  • 400px by 400px (art)

Posts not using this format will be understood to be unofficial discussion posts, regardless of what they contain. They, like all comments in this community, are subject to the code of conduct.

These numbers apply to your team as a whole, not each individual teammate. Make as many fills as you want!

For fills:

First 3 fills by any member of your team: 20 points each
Fills 4-10: 10 points each
Fills 11-20: 5 points each
Fills 21+: 2 points each

All scored content must be created new for this round.

If you're hunting through the prompts looking for what to fill, a good trick is to view top-level comments only.

Ship: Hoshizora Rin/Toujou Nozomi
Word Count: 1,140

Outside Nozomi's window, the sky is a velvet curtain speckled with diamonds, the deep purple of the nighttime heavens untouched by the light of a moon that's gone dark and new. Nozomi enjoys new moon nights — they're a chance for the stars to shine brighter, to try harder. She folds herself into the window seat with her cheek against the glass, a book of charms spread out across her knees.

There comes a thump from the floor, the sound of her little black kitten trying — and failing — to jump onto the seat cushion.

Nozomi puts her hand down and the kitten jumps on that instead, batting at her fingertips and mewling softly from the ground. With her hands occupied, Nozomi is left to flick the pages of her book forward with a thought, with the gentle application of magic that's practical, nothing but practical, which definitely isn't for show.

(The smile on her lips speaks against that.)

The kitten jumps on her arm, little claws only just biting into her skin, and then up onto the window seat. Nozomi laughs through the momentary prickle of pain, a high, musical sound full of the simple pleasure of sharing a seat with a cat. Hers is an inquisitive one, shoving her little head under Nozomi's knees as soon as she's high enough to reach, shoving her wet little nose against the nearest windowpane as if she, too, wants to stare out into the night.

"The stars are beautiful, aren't they?" Nozomi asks.

Her familiar gives a little "mreow" of agreement, and Nozomi laughs again, reaching down to tousle the fur atop the cat's head. She pushes into Nozomi's hand, eager and purring, and Nozomi pulls her all the way into her lap. Every good witch needs a familiar, and Nozomi in particular needed the company more than most.

She deals in wishes; in charms for luck, for good fortune, for love. She gives people the things they might not be brave enough to ask for with their own voices, wishes where they only have the heart to ask for her. Miss Nozomi, write me a charm. Miss Nozomi, do me a spell. This is absolutely hopeless, miss Nozomi, isn't there some way you can help?

There always is, but the trick of her magic is, there's so little Nozomi can do for herself.

"Oh!" Nozomi exclaims, hand stilling in the middle of tickling the cat's chin, eye caught by a star shooting across the sky. "Did you see that, little one?"

Her familiar stares up at her, with bright, golden eyes that shine in the room's low light. Nozomi flops back against the cushions lining the cup of the window seat and tugs the cat with her, until she can feel her familiar's purring as if the vibrations are resonating from within her own chest, in tune with her own heart. There isn't a lot Nozomi can do for herself, with wishes and charms and practical magic. But no one ever said the things she does for others cannot benefit her as well.

"Make a wish," she says. "That shooting star is just for you."

Her fingertips tingle, tremble with magic that lights up her blood, her hands shaking as she carefully pets the cat who's been her constant companion for months. There's a dam inside of her, a blockade behind which the power builds and builds, all the intensity of a star shower gathering in her heart as she makes herself a conduit for the universe. Passive yet powerful; this is the skill she's dedicated herself towards.

The magic flows out of her all at once, in a joyous outrushing that escapes from her hands and her heart even as it sings in her veins. There's the chime of something being struck and catching, a single peal like the purest bell ringing. And then there's a weight on Nozomi's chest, much heavier than what had been there before.

"Miss Nozomi!" a startled voice says, as small hands press at her shoulders.

The golden eyes staring back at her are familiar, even if the rest of the girl sprawled in her lap seems nothing but new. Nozomi's mouth twitches, her lips turning up at the corners. "I always wondered what a cat would wish for. Somehow this isn't what I would have guessed!"

The girl's cheeks puff up, and go pink, but even through her embarrassment she stares Nozomi down. Cats were stubborn creatures; Nozomi supposes she shouldn't be surprised.

"So what if I wanted to be a girl," she says. "I didn't think you should get all the fun."

"Ah ah," Nozomi says. "That's what it is? You want to have fun?"

"I do!" she declares.

"Well then," Nozomi says, sitting up slowly so that Rin is forced to sit back, a tactic that's worked countless times before for cornering her into her cat carrier. "Let's find something fun for the both of us to do."

It isn't what Nozomi expects, having her familiar transform with the force of a star, having a little redheaded girl go tumbling into her lap. But she makes her living around the unexpected, and she does pride herself on her ability to improvise. Rin stumbles out of the window seat and scrambles to her feet; Nozomi swings her legs down and stands with more grace. She slips her arm around Rin's shoulders, steering her back towards the kitchen.

It's late, going on midnight, but what better hour for witchery to be afoot?

"Will I stay like this?" Rin asks, in a very small voice.

"That's up to you, I think," Nozomi replies. "The magic is in you, now. It's up to you to keep that spirit alive."

"I will!" Rin insists. "I will, I will, I will, I'll do whatever it takes, miss Nozomi. I have hands now!"

She spreads them out before her, giving all of her fingers an excited little wriggle. Nozomi laughs, and reaches out with her free hand to flick on the kitchen light.

"Now," she says. "As much as cats are supposed to like cream, how do you feel about cookies?"

Rin's round little eyes open up big and wide, alight with her eagerness. "I would love a cookie."

"Then here you go," Nozomi says, dumping a canister of flour into her arms. "Let's make some."

Every good witch needs a familiar. It's a mantra Nozomi has repeated to herself more than once in the past, when her customers filter out of the shop downstairs at the end of the day and she's left to her own loose ends. She's always needed one more than most. Maybe the universe, great gorgeous yawning thing that she's devoted herself to hearing, has chosen to listen to her instead. Maybe it's granted her wish, and gifted her with a friend.
