Bonus Round 1.5: AUs

AUs

SASO 2017 is over, but this round is perpetually open to new fills (no new prompts).

Second verse, same as the first! This is an overflow post for br1, meant to hold new prompts and their fills (so that we don't hit comment cap on the first br post).

Please read this whole post before commenting to ensure that your team gets the most points possible. (There are changes from last year!)

RULES
  • Submit prompts by commenting to this post with an alternate universe idea, along with a ship from one of our nominated fandoms. There's a comment template below for your convenience.
    • Your prompt MUST include some kind of relationship. (This is not the sports anime gen olympics.) Platonic relationships are indicated by an "&" between the names (e.g., Izumi & Sakaeguchi). Non-platonic relationships use "/" (e.g., Izumi/Sakaeguchi). Please don't say "Any pairing," either!
  • An AU can be a canon divergence, e.g. "what if [character] was the Team Captain instead of the canon captain character?", or a completely different setting altogether, e.g., pop idol AU, coffee shop AU, superheroes AU, etc.
  • Fill prompts by leaving a responding comment to the prompt with your newly-created work.
  • Remember to follow the general bonus round rules, outlined here.

FORMAT
Bonus round shenanigans all happen in the comments below. Brand-new works only, please.

Required Work Minimums:
  • 400 words (prose)

There is no max work cap.

Posts not using this format will be understood to be unofficial discussion posts, regardless of what they contain. They, like all comments in this community, are subject to the code of conduct.

If you see anyone breaking the code of conduct (e.g., causing drama, being rude) anywhere (not just DW), please contact the mods immediately.

SCORING
These numbers apply to your team as a whole, not each individual teammate. Make as many prompts/fills as you want!

For prompts: 5 points each (maximum of 50 prompt points per team per round)

For fills:
First 4 fills by any member of your team: 20 points each
Fills 5-10: 15 points each
Fills 11-20: 5 points each
Fills 21-50: 2 points each
Fills 51+: 1 point each

All scored content must be created new for this round.

Etc.
If you're hunting through the prompts looking for what to fill, a good trick is to view top-level comments only (see the line of links below this post).

Have a question? Check The FAQ first. If you still need help, feel free to contact the mods. Happy fanworking!

I need this really badly, so

***

A hiker is stranded in the mountains. His food ran out a few days ago, and he can't remember what it's like to drink. There’s nothing here but trees upon trees and the stars above.
He’s going to die.
He sees a flicker, something like a silhouette. But it's no mirage, it's solid. It's a person — a person in a white layered kimono.
“Help me,” the hiker croaks. “Help me, please.”
“Lucky! Well, not for you. Sorry. I’m not going to help you. You see, you’re in the territory of the mountain god.”
And the hiker sees inhuman purple eyes, and curses his luck.

People have been dying in the mountains less. Paved roads and streetlights make travel a lot safer, and have starved the mountain god.
But today he’s full of energy, and flies down to the edge of the mountain, to where a young couple have set up a modest boutique. “Maki-chan!” calls the mountain god. “Are you here today?”
A groan trickles out of the shed. Out shuffles comes a lanky man with mossy green hair and an outfit so bright it hurts the mountain god’s eyes. “Now I wish I wasn’t. Why are you so energetic?”
“Offering!”
“Huh. Good for you.”
This new god that camps out in the back of this humble store calls himself Fashion. He’s always dressed in clashing bright colors and pieces of fabric that could barely be called clothing. The mountain god understands reverence for tailors, but reverence for clothing itself is absurd— so he’ll never call the new god by his proper name. Instead, he dubbed the new god Makishima— but that wasn’t cute enough, so Maki-chan it is.
Makishima retaliated by calling the mountain god Toudou.
Neither are determined to move, so they’ve come to a sort of stalemate.

“What’s wrong with my clothes?”
“I’m telling you, it looks bad.”
“Anyone who wears an outfit with four sleeves has no right to talk! Why are there even four of them? You only have two arms!”
“It’s conceptual. But seriously, traditional clothing’s only in style for performers and festivals.”
Toudou squawks. “Excuse me? These clothes are reverence! I have to have some majesty!”
“Around who? Your fellow gods? Your worshippers?” Toudou tenses up, and Makishima realizes how carelessly he let his words fall. He clicks his tongue. “Sorry. I was just—”
“Lady Amaterasu is back in Takamagahara. The Kamui have huddled all up north. There used to be a time when the kami would all gather together and celebrate, but now most of them are afraid to leave their shrines.”
The generations pass, and are consumed by new gods. Of technology, of media, of new things to entertain them. The people forget what it’s like to give thanks to the earth they live on. They weep by their grandparents’ deathbeds, but can’t recall the names of the gods in their grandparents’ shrines.
They’ve forgotten what it’s like to be afraid, so they’ve forgotten who they should be worshipping.
Toudou knows that his faith is thinning. The reason he’s not fading away is because people still look out of their houses at night and fear what could be lurking on the mountains. But that won’t last for long. When the last person who adores the mountain god leaves this earth, so will he.
“But don’t worry! I won’t be going that easily!”
Makishima pauses, and then laughs, pushing his hair back over his shoulder. “You’re too noisy to just keel over, anyway.”
“Wh—Maki-chan!”

“You keep coming by here. Are you lonely or something?”
Toudou hums, grabbing a shirt from the outside rack and holding it up to himself. “You never come to visit me, so I have to do all the work!” He laughs to himself. “You say that now, but if I leave, I bet you actually miss my company!”
“I doubt it.” Makishima scoffs, and takes off a different shirt from the rack. It’s purple, faint like the wildflowers that dot the new roads. He holds it out, and Toudou takes it.
It’s a splash of color against white, and Toudou loves it.

Makishima wrinkles his nose. “It stinks.”
“Don’t tell me you’ve never seen a corpse before.”
“I have! But just not… like this. This is just- just brutal. ”
Toudou pauses, the tip of the nagitana still in the corpse’s flesh. Most of body been cut up into small, manageable pieces to swallow, each brimming with the deceased’s trapped soul.
“It’s not like I like doing this either,” Toudou sighs. “Back then, people used to do this for me.”
Lanterns up and down the mountain, from where the village people marched to the shrine. A young sacrifice, shrouded in white with their hands clasped in prayer. They’d kneel, lower their head, and wait for the blade fall. Their flesh, their soul, would go to the gods— to him, as reverence for fertile land and safe passage.
“But now I have to do everything by myself!”
Makishima covers his face with a puffed sleeve. “Human sacrifice is outdated.”
Toudou swivels his head around. “What about all the people who starve themselves to fit in your clothes? Or all the people who die trying to make them?”
“…Fair point.”

“You put all this work in, but people don’t care about you.”
“That’s right,” Toudou says, and that’s that. There’s no need to gloss over it. “Maybe I’ll relinquish the mountain to the next new god that comes along. ‘Industry’, maybe.”
“I doubt it. But is it really that bad, or are you just being dramatic again?”
“I’m just the right amount of dramatic! But this doesn’t need any spicing up. You’ve seen me cutting up corpses, Maki-chan. You new gods say we’re outdated, but that’s not really the case. People have just changed. So, enjoy my company while you can!”
“I don’t know if I can enjoy an old god who wakes me up from my nap and barges in whenever he feels like it.” Toudou yelps, but Makishima continues, “But yeah. It won’t be the same. Change your kimono to light purple. Then you won’t be so bad.”
The couple inside is closing up for the night, and soon it’ll be time for him to go. Makishima can only stay where business is active. He’ll reappear someplace else in the world, wherever there’s ‘high fashion’, whatever that means.
“You should stay sometime,” Toudou says, knocking their shoulders together. “You should see the stars. I bet you can’t see them with the city lights blinding everything.”
Makishima sighs, and scratches his head, and Toudou expects another rebuff, like so many times before. “When these two pull an all-nighter, maybe then.”
The mountains have always been harsh, even with roads winding through it, but when the ground flattens and makes a charming makeshift path to a small little boutique at the end of the mountain, the people say what a weird miracle it is. Whoever’s up there, they muse, must have a funny sense of humor.

Living in the back end of nowhere isn't fun at all, Tooru decides at four years old. At five years old, he learns it doesn't matter what he decides in the end, and starts helping his dad on the water farm. That doesn't stop him from wandering further than he should into the desert and shrubland surrounding their homestead, exploring as far as he can in the few hours he gets to himself before exhaustion overtakes him and he goes to bed for the day.
Water farming is as mundane as it gets, Tooru decides at eight. Drawing water out of the air and ground and storing it in magical vials isn't exactly his idea of adventure and excitement. He'd rather fight monsters, ride dragons, conquer kingdoms, feel his lungs shake with desperation as he swims through a storm away from a pirate ship. But no -- alas, he's the son of water farmers, the grandson of water farmers, probably from a long line of desert nomads turned water farmers. Cloud extraction isn't exactly high up on skills that'll help on the battlefield, either, and how's Tooru going to travel the world and fight evil when he's grown up like that?
So that's why, also at eight years old, he starts training sword-fighting with sticks against trees, robbing himself of another two hours of sleep. It's worth it, even if his mother shouts at him most evenings when he returns home with bruises and a rueful grin.

Stumbling across strange creatures isn't unusual when you live this far out of the cities and towns. Most were hunted or smoked out centuries ago in more populated areas, but here in the Arcane Shrublands it's a lovely yet common surprise to find an abandoned wraith nest or dull shedded dragon scales.
He's ten when he meets the baby dragon. It's not exactly a dragon, he thinks. Way too small to be one. He'd assume it was the mundane counterpart, a bearded dragon most people call them, except in the place of the sanded yellow-lime scales it has charcoal, gray and blue ones. And the eyes aren't round and dark as they should be, they're a mossy green with a sharp slanted pupil.
Whatever it is, it's kind of hideous, and Tooru gladly tells it so on their first meeting. Later that evening, while he's dodging imaginery stabs and rolling to the right to leap at a tree with his sword-stick, something bites him hard on the foot. He lets out a shrill squawk of a yell, turning to glare accusatorily at the... thing staring impassively back at him before turning and scrambling onto a nearby boulder.
It's two more evenings of that. On the third, Tooru takes the lizard -- christened Iwa-chan for the rock perch it likes to look down snootily at Tooru from -- home. What's a farm without any animals, after all?

Tooru is fifteen, after an argument turned fight turned one-sided drunken brawl with his father, when he decides Iwa-chan is his best friend, black spikes and green eyes and scales and all.

At nineteen years old, Tooru has grown into himself in all ways a boy can. He's tall, strong from farm labour and sharp from the magic casting that accompanies it. His voice is deep, skin smooth and hands calloused, and in the village a day's ride over he's known among certain groups of young girls as a prime bachelor to put their hopes into.
Even his eccentricities are admired, particularly among his father's friends. At first they teased him, put him down, scorned him even for his ever-growing yearning to travel and explore, his thirst for knowledge of spells far outside the usual span of knowledge of a water farmer, the lizard perpetually perched on his shoulder whispering into his ear. Then he rigged out his family's farm with a system twice as efficient as before, and stubbornly weened his parents off of their alcohol dependency, and saved his younger sister from a pack of sand wolves all by himself, and that's when the men of the town started taking him more seriously.

"Iwa-chan~," Tooru sings. "Iwa-chan, he's a lizard dragon boy, Iwa-chan, Iwa-chan~"
The bearded dragon perched on his shoulder nips gently at his jaw, a sign that he knows Tooru is singing about him and doesn't appreciate it, and will let him go on anyway. He may be an animal, and a mundane one at that, but Tooru is sure -- has learned through the ten years they've spent together -- that he's pretty much a person in scaly form. It's like he can hear a voice in his head, an exasperated but fond stupid as he traipses through the shrubbery to his usual training ground.
Years of trampling has packed the dirt tight underfoot. It's nice; like a little home he's made for himself in the wild. Tooru feels more at peace out here than at home anyway, even though he and his parents have passed the troublesome phase in their relationship for the most part. It's nice to feel like the whole world is yours for the taking, rather than confined by class and status and wealth and means. And geography, of course. There's also the fact that he's a thousand leagues away from civilization in any direction -- or at least, that's what it feels like.
It was already dark out when he left, not that it matters. He knows his way to his clearing as well as the back of his hand. The cool night air on his skin, the rough fabric of his shirt rubbing against his back, the soft pinch of Iwa-chan's claws on his shoulder -- it's all familiar to him, it feels like home, and just like that he can feel the tension of the day bleed out of his neck and shoulders. He tilts his head a little as he walks, nuzzling the lizard with his hair and cheek. A soft clicking sounds as reply, soothing and quiet.
Once he reaches the trianing ground Tooru doesn't hesitate in picking up one of the many wooden swords he's carved himself; its handle is worn, too smooth to produce even the slightest splinter. A skinny thing, designed to be used with a partner. He wanted to try making double-edged curved swords but making that with wood is asking for more trouble than it's worth. As he does so, the lizard scrambles down his arm and settles down on his favourite perch to judge Tooru's swordplay.
"And besides," he mutters, half to Iwa-chan, half to himself, "if I got used to the weighting of wooden swords and trained with them it would make getting used to the real thing all the harder."
Iwa-chan gives him a beady stare as if to say, "look what you're holding in your hand, stupid".
And Tooru twirls the wooden sword with a flourish, ending it with the tip pointing at his pet dramatically. Iwa-chan doesn't even blink. "I won't be using a one-handed weapon like this ever, obviously, Iwa-chan. It's too clumsy. I want something nimble--" He punctuates it with a complicated twirl-turn-parry-turn-slash in the opposite direction. "Something fast and flexible. That I can use spells with instead of on."
He glances back at Iwa-chan for affirmation. He just blinks at him, face unmoving. 'That makes no sense', it says.
"Shut up," Tooru mutters, turning away to hide a grin.
The next four hours are taken up with as complex swordplay as you can practice alone, Tooru panting and sweating as he perfects his own style of fighitng, Iwa-chan watching with his beady slanted eyes all the while. It's only when the birds start their morning rounds and the world turns pale and purple with the beginning of dawn does Tooru allow himself to sit down, exhausted and drenched and satiated, beside Iwa-chan's boulder.
He pulls off his shirt and lets the cool air, still waiting for the sun to warm it, raise goosebumps along his skin. A big sigh escapes his lips. "That went well, Iwa-chan," he mutters, absentmindedly stroking the lizard beside his head. Iwa-chan moved towards him the second Tooru made himself comfortable, enjoying the warmth of his skin probably. He nuzzles him fondly. "That went well."
Quietly, they watch the sun rise. Light peeks across the wide open space, through the bushes some as as tall as three men and some knee level, across the planes of the Arcane Shrublands. Sleepiness pervades his senses, but Tooru had purpose in training all night.
"Happy birthday to me." He cracks his neck to the side, and groans deep in his chest with satisfaction. "Guess who's a man now, hmm?"
Iwa-chan bumps his nose on his cheek. Tooru smirks.
"That's right," he coos, "that's right, Iwa-chan, I am, aren't I? Twenty years old, lucky me. And you know what also means, don't you? Of course you do~" He turns and gazes adoringly at the scaly black thing. "It's a decade since you, asshole you are, bit me on the ankle and scarred me for life." He did, as well. Even if Iwa-chan sometimes licks at the tiny scar with his forked little tongue as if to apologise, Tooru will never let it go.
His soft tone contradicts the biting words. Iwa-chan tilts his head to the side. His pupils narrow slightly. Tooru can't help but giggle. "You're--" He leans forward, nose to nose with Iwa-chan. "God, you're so damn ugly," he snorts, before leaning forward and giving him a tiny peck on the tip of his nose. "I love you anyway, though."
"Yeah, no shit," comes the reply, and Tooru has exactly half a second to snicker to himself before he freezes. Freezes, opens his eyes, stares forward blindly. Blinks again. Reminds himself to breathe. Looks up.
Green eyes look back at him. Not slanted though, and not beady, and definitively not the eyes of the lizard he's lovingly cared for these past ten years. Tooru's mouth opens and closes like a fish. He's lost for words, which--
"That's a first," the voice says, or rather, the owner of the voice, that being the human that is sitting -- lying? -- right where his beautiful ugly Iwa-chan was exactly five seconds ago.
Tooru looks up slowly, mouth dry. It takes three swallows to try form the words. "...I-Iwa-chan?"
The man is strong, and lean, and shirtless. His trousers are the same ripped peasant-cloth that Tooru's are. He's got dark hair, black as his scales, spiky as his beard, and eyes the same mossy green as before. Tooru can't breathe. His lizard just--
"God, finally," the man is saying, leaning back to sit up on the boulder. He rolls his shoulders back, the muscles of his torso rippling as he does. He takes a great big breath, holds it for a moment, before letting it all out in one long whoosh. That's when he finally looks down again at Tooru, who's still trying to blink himself back to reality when Iwa-chan was Iwa-chan.
But the second they make eye contact, Tooru can't help it -- he lets out a loud unelegant bark of laughter. "Y-You're--" Cackles overtake him, robbing him of breath, and he has to physically calm himself down enough to say, "Of course you're got frowny eyebrows. Of course you do. Grumpy old-- hahaha, grumpy old man!"
Iwa-chan Human Version stares at him in the same way as before, judgmental and silent. But then a soft grin peeks out, and before his eyes it grows into a blinding beaming smile. It's funny; lizard Iwa-chan was about as ugly as human Iwa-chan isn't.
"You saved me," Iwa-chan says, eyes soft.
"You're my lizard," Tooru shoots back blankly.
Iwa-chan waves a hand in the air as if to brush it off -- his skin is tan, 'sun-kissed' one would say -- and lithely hops off the boulder to sit beside Tooru. "I was cursed," he begins, and it's all Tooru can do to silently nod along as he listens, "by the leader of a colony of dragons almost a century ago. My family hunted his to near extinction in the span of a decade, so as revenge he kidnapped me -- the only son and heir-- and turned me into a mundane bearded dragon."
He falls silent as if waiting for Tooru to say something.
"That sucks," he ends up with.
"Yeah," Iwa-chan agrees with a solemn nod. "But cause you kissed me on the nose after ten years, here I am. Thanks for that."
"That's... convenient."
"Yeah."
"Not that I'm complaining."
"Me neither," Iwa-chan laughs darkly.
Tooru winces. "God, I changed and pissed and cried in front of you and everything."
Iwa-chan snorts. "You're so ugly when you cry."
"Excuse you, I'm damn radiant."
Iwa-chan rolls his eyes. Tooru pointedly notices that he doesn't argue that point, and smirks to himself. Still my pet.
"So like... why did your family hunt the dragons?"
"Uh." He rubs the back of his head. "It was complicated. They burned a bunch of our villages, my granddad waged a war or two, it was a mess. And of course--" He rolls his eyes again, something Tooru can already tell is a habit. "They all decide to take it out on the young prince. Because logic."
"You're a prince?"
"Yeah, didn't I mention that?"
Tooru shakes his head silently. Well, I wanted adventure in far away lands... "So what now?"
"Well, I have to return probably, and get rid of the evil that's taken over while I was gone. All my family's dead by now, anyway. I was the sole heir, you know?"
"That sucks," Tooru says again.
"Not really. Like I said, wars against dragons."
"Fair."
"Yeah."
Even though they just met (as mutual humans) for the first time, Tooru feels like he knows Iwa-chan intimately. So when Iwa-chan glances over with a knowing look, face carefully neutral, Tooru knows something big is about to happen.
"You wanna come along?" Iwa-chan asks casually.
Tooru blinks. Adventure. Magic. Potential epic love story.
"Yeah." He shrugs. "Sounds like fun."

And so, at nineteen years old, Oikawa Tooru knows he wants to explore the world and have adventures and that his best friend is a mundane dragon called Iwa-chan.
At twenty, he sets out with his best friend in tow, and prepares to do just that.

***

Long long ago, when the world is still young, Heaven and Earth are close enough to cross in one day. Humans and gods alike walk the sprawling lands with abandon, and everyone knows of the Heavenly Emperor’s seven children. They held tremendous power and talent; however, with their blessed gifts comes dangerous pride. And this pride is the beginning of their doom.

There is Akashi, said to take after the Heavenly Emperor himself, all-knowing and commanding like the brightest and most fearless war general. There is Murasakibara, the biggest presence of them all, immovable and unstoppable all at the same time. There is Midorima, the most accurate archer in all the lands above and below, never faltering and always high-achieving. There is Aomine, the fastest and strongest warrior with a fiery ambition to match, unbeatable in any challenge. There is Kise, captivating and mesmerizing in every and any way, always striving to surpass. There is Momoi, sharp and curious, the wisest of them all. And there is Kuroko, the youngest son, the one whose very existence is a question of its own.

Kuroko is often found wandering through the skies, keeping his friend Ogiwara company. Ogiwara is a spirit of the sun, and Kuroko rather likes the warmth he gives, purely and unconditionally.

But because Kuroko is the most doted on of all his siblings, it is natural that the other Heavenly children became jealous towards Ogiwara. They demanded Kuroko’s attention, and when he refused to give it to them, they used their father’s blessings and turned themselves into suns as well.

“If Kuroko wants the sun,” says Aomine, “then I’ll be the best, brightest sun there ever was. No one can beat me.”

“Think again, Aomine,” Kise says, and he moves across the sky, doing his best to outshine all of them.

Midorima turns up his nose at them, but he doesn’t hesitate to project himself into the sky. Murasakibara is already there, floating lazily and dangerously close to the earth, scorching the land until it’s barren. Momoi isn’t as good at being a sun, but she’s determined to win Kuroko’s favour more than anyone else, so she shines and shines and shines. Akashi burns in position at high noon, staring down at the earth that Kuroko loves so much with disdain.

Together, the seven suns in the sky is too much for the mortals on earth to bear. Their crops burn, the rivers dry up, and even under their flimsy roofs the heat is too much. The humans pray to the gods and the heavens above, leaving as much food as they can spare as sacrifices, asking for their deities to spare them some mercy. But the Heaven’s Children remain fixed in the sky.

When Kuroko realizes what is going on, he is heartbroken. He pleads to his siblings, but they are too busy competing in the skies to hear him. Only Ogiwara hears him, and he implores his friend to ask the mortals for help.

“Go, Kuroko,” Ogiwara says. “Take this elixir of life. When you find a worthy warrior, give it to them as a reward. But remember, it is for two. Make sure to take half the elixir to return, Kuroko. No less, and more more.”

So Kuroko descends from the Heavens.

He travels from village to village, searching for anyone that might be strong enough to defeat his siblings. It takes days, maybe weeks. The world is on fire, and night is nowhere to be found.

Finally, finally, Kuroko comes across a famed archer. His name is Kagami, and he has no interest in things outside of the mortal realm.

“Please, Kagami-kun,” Kuroko says, “Please help me defeat my siblings.”

“They’re your family, aren’t they?” Kagami returns. “Why would you want to defeat them?”

“They will ruin the earth,” says Kuroko, “and then themselves. I am trying to save them from themselves.”

“By using me.”

“Yes.” Kuroko stares up at Kagami, eyes as calm as the quiet oceans. “You are the greatest archer of these lands, and I believe you can help me.”

Kagami hesitates. “What’s in it for me?”

Kuroko considers. “Your name will go down in history. You will become the champion of the Heavens and the Earth. If you help me, I will make a legend out of you.”

“But I don’t want to be a legend,” Kagami says. “I just want to live as fully as I can.”
“I promise you can and you will,” Kuroko tells him.

So Kagami and Kuroko go to bring down Heaven’s Children. The seven suns in the sky is almost too much to look at. Kuroko stays where he is in the shadows, directing Kagami as he faces the burning skies, standing tall and fearless. Even as his skin blisters and sweat rolls off his form, Kagami does not falter. He trusts in Kuroko’s words, and shoots.

The first sun to go is Kise. He falls through the sky with an anguished cry, and lands in the town of Kaijo. He is fished out days later from the nearby seas by a man named Kasamatsu, and Kise falls in love with the human art of sailing.

The second sun to go is Midorima. He drops into the fields of Shuutoku, and is found by a farmer boy of the Takao family. Midorima is appalled by the amount of physical exertion the humans have to do in order to sustain themselves, and spends years and years trying to find an easier way for the people that took him in.

The third sun to fall is Murasakibara. He goes down wordlessly, and decades later is discovered living a life of bountiful foods in the mountains of Yosen with a man whose beauty is rumoured to rival the goddesses.

The fourth and fifth sun descends together. Momoi and Aomine wake up in the town of Touou, and together they rebuild the town until its name is heard far and wide throughout the lands.

The sixth sun is the hardest to shoot down, but when he does, Akashi goes without a fight. He lands in the town that will later become the new capital of a new kingdom that will be read about in history books decades and decades from now.

Kagami lifts his bow and holds it steady. The sky is much emptier now, the heat less harsh, and slowly the earth revives itself. The last and final sun sits low on the horizon.

“Wait,” Kuroko says. He looks up at his friend, and even though he is too far from the Heavens to see him, he knows Ogiwara is smiling at him. “Humans need sunlight to grow. Let us leave one sun in the sky, Kagami-kun.”

True to Kuroko’s words, Kagami returns a champion, a hero. He turns down all the offers for marriage and knighthood and riches, however, and instead turns to Kuroko, now a familiar presence.

“I don’t want anything else, so come home with me,” he says, and Kuroko agrees.

They live in peace for several years in a tiny village called Seirin, beloved by the people not for their fame but for their help around town. Until one day, a greedy emperor arrives in search of the legendary elixir of life.

The emperor is sly, and tells his men to wait until Kagami has left the house. Kuroko is alone when they knock down the door. His Heavenly gifts have long been abandoned that day long ago when he came down to Earth. Still, he stands tall in the face of their weapons and threats.

“Give me the elixir,” says Gold. “Make me immortal.”

“I refuse,” Kuroko responds.

But when the Jabberwock soldiers do not stand down, Kuroko resorts to desperate measures. Right in front of their eyes, Kuroko drinks the elixir, drinks and drinks until every last drop is gone. Distantly, he hears Ogiwara’s words from way back then: Take half the elixir to return, Kuroko. No less and no more. He can feel his body begin to tingle. He stares down Gold and his men.

“Leave,” he says quietly, and he is sad but resigned to see the fear in the Jabberwock soldiers. Kuroko was a child of the Heavens, after all. “Do not come back.”

Soon, Kuroko’s feet lifts off from the earth, and he begins to float towards to skies. He can’t hear Ogiwara anymore, nor can he find the gates to his first home. Instead, Kuroko finds refuge in the far, far away moon, and there he stays.

When Kagami returns home, he finds it empty and deserted. There is an empty vial on the floor, but no trace of Kuroko. Not even the lingering scent of vanilla and rain. He races back out in time to see the moon rise, and there, in the shadows of the distant moon, is a figure as familiar as his own reflection in water. And he can feel his heart break. Not even the great warrior Kagami can reach the moon.

As years pass, Kagami spends his nights outside, watching the moon and hiding from the sun. He wonders if Kuroko ever watches him back.

(He does, every night, until the end of time.)
