Bonus Round 1.5: AUs

SASO 2017 is over, but this round is perpetually open to new fills (no new prompts).

Second verse, same as the first! This is an overflow post for br1, meant to hold new prompts and their fills (so that we don't hit comment cap on the first br post).

Please read this whole post before commenting to ensure that your team gets the most points possible. (There are changes from last year!)

  • Submit prompts by commenting to this post with an alternate universe idea, along with a ship from one of our nominated fandoms. There's a comment template below for your convenience.
    • Your prompt MUST include some kind of relationship. (This is not the sports anime gen olympics.) Platonic relationships are indicated by an "&" between the names (e.g., Izumi & Sakaeguchi). Non-platonic relationships use "/" (e.g., Izumi/Sakaeguchi). Please don't say "Any pairing," either!
  • An AU can be a canon divergence, e.g. "what if [character] was the Team Captain instead of the canon captain character?", or a completely different setting altogether, e.g., pop idol AU, coffee shop AU, superheroes AU, etc.
  • Fill prompts by leaving a responding comment to the prompt with your newly-created work.
  • Remember to follow the general bonus round rules, outlined here.

Bonus round shenanigans all happen in the comments below. Brand-new works only, please.

Required Work Minimums:
  • 400 words (prose)
  • 400px by 400px (art)
  • 14 lines (poetry)
There is no max work cap.

Format your comment in one of the following ways:

  • Replace [YOUR SHIP] with the name of the team you belong to. Any way you format it is fine.
  • Copy/paste/fill out the following form into your comment box. Delete the guidance text that's in parentheses. Make sure you use tags.

Here is a BR Template Creator for your convenience if the textarea is confusing.

Posts not using this format will be understood to be unofficial discussion posts, regardless of what they contain. They, like all comments in this community, are subject to the code of conduct.

If you see anyone breaking the code of conduct (e.g., causing drama, being rude) anywhere (not just DW), please contact the mods immediately.

These numbers apply to your team as a whole, not each individual teammate. Make as many prompts/fills as you want!

For prompts: 5 points each (maximum of 50 prompt points per team per round)

For fills:
First 4 fills by any member of your team: 20 points each
Fills 5-10: 15 points each
Fills 11-20: 5 points each
Fills 21-50: 2 points each
Fills 51+: 1 point each

All scored content must be created new for this round.

If you're hunting through the prompts looking for what to fill, a good trick is to view top-level comments only (see the line of links below this post).

"You're a monster of your own making," Akashi murmurs as he stands over Himuro in the locker room.

Akashi came to Rakuzan with a plan, and it had included the three Uncrowned Kings at his disposal. It hadn't included Himuro Tatsuya, who squares his shoulders as he stands beside three players far better than him and doesn't flinch.

Himuro Tatsuya, who looks up at him, hair falling over one eye and obscuring the very corner of his smile as he regards Akashi and says, "I believe you would know plenty about that, wouldn't you?"

Himuro is not the shadow that Akashi wants; his light might be dull, but there's no use in trying to extinguish it because it only makes him burn harder, even if it's not any brighter, until he burns himself out. He might not fit neatly into Akashi's plans, but he'll be useful all the same. Akashi will find his shadow elsewhere; this player is too useful in his own way for it to be wasted.

"I'm curious," Akashi says, "about just how familiar you are with your own limitations."

"Excruciatingly familiar," Himuro replies between clenched teeth, and Akashi's gaze catches on the glint of metal around his neck. A necklace with a ring, perhaps, but Akashi can recognise a ball and chain when he sees it. "Can I ask the same of you?"

"I am absolute," Akashi states it as a simple fact.

Himuro nods, as if that's enough of an answer for him. There's a familiarity in his gaze that Akashi doesn't like. It makes him want to break something.

It won't do to break his own players. His eyes settle on the chain around Himuro's neck. Something else then, he decides.

"I have the final decision for who is allowed on the first string," Akashi tells him. "There are better players than you."

"Only four, in this entire basketball club," Himuro replies. "There is room on the court for five."

Six, Akashi silently corrects him, but that's something that he'll address later.

"Your place as a starting member will be guaranteed, on one condition."

Himuro smiles at him, just as good at using his fakes off the court as he is when playing. Unfortunately for him, Akashi sees through all of it. "You're very interesting, aren't you, Captain?"

Akashi holds his hand out, waiting. "My players will be expected to play at their fullest. I will not tolerate any of them being weighed down by extra weight, Tatsuya."

It takes Himuro a moment to realise what Akashi is asking. He frowns, opening his mouth to protest. Akashi looks down at him, waiting, watching as Himuro's thoughts play out across his face.

The ring and necklace, when dropped into Akashi's hand, is not that heavy at all. Himuro, however, seems as if he's just shed the weight of the world.

Eiji slammed the open the door to the roof and immediately made his way to the edge. Gripping his hands around the edge, he took a deep breath and let it all out.

He paused, short of breath but still angry. “MEANIE! PROMISE-BREAKER! JERK! HOW COULD YOU?”

Even if he wanted to continue, one of the neighbors opened a window and yelled at him to be quiet, which considering the burn of his throat, Eiji agreed and apologized. He had no energy left to be angry anyway and his hands slipped easily from the edge.

Eiji hated fighting with Oishi, as often as it happened. He tended to lash out first and then apologize later, but they never fought for more than a day or two. This, however...this wasn’t even a fight. Oishi had broken his trust. He wasn’t going to play with Eiji during nationals. He disappeared after every practice before Eiji could even try to approach him. So where did they even go from here?

And oh, there was a thought. Was tennis the only thing keeping them together? Was tennis the reason why they were even still friends? Oishi probably had told Tezuka about his injury, since he trusted the captain and best friend so much more than him. Eiji was just his doubles partner. He saw that Eiji was strong in tennis and they became a pair. Being a good double pair meant they had to understand each other, so that’s why they had to hang out. And why they did their homework together. And played tennis, the one thing that they actually had in common. They played so much tennis....It was only always about tennis, huh?

Sinking down to the ground, Eiji wasn’t ashamed of his tears, he was just ashamed that he had never realized it before.

“Um..hello? You okay over there?”

The voice sounded a little nervous but Eiji wasn’t in the mood to respond.

“I, uh, have been here the whole time!! I didn’t mean to eavesdrop, but you were loud enough that i’m pretty sure the whole neighborhood heard. Anyway, it sounds like you’re having a rough time and um, I just want to say that if you need an ear, I’m here! My friend Haru is still showering, so I’m stuck on his roof until he’s done so...Um. No pressure, but it sounds like you could use a friend.”

Eiji couldn’t deny that. He needed a friend...even if that friend wasn’t Oishi. He stood up, wiping his face, and looked around. “Who...Where are you?”

“Turn right and look up.”

There, on the roof of the dojo next to Eiji’s house, stood a boy he’d never seen before. He was obviously older, and considering he said Haru, he had to have meant Haruki, the son of the dojo’s owner.

“I’m Hashimoto Kazuma. First year at Meishin University.” Hashimoto’s smile was bright even in the dim lights of night and Eiji found himself drifting a little closer to it. “What’s your name?”

“Kikumaru Eiji. I’m a third year at Seigaku Middle School.”

“Eh!? Middle school? I figured you were in high school at least!” Hashimoto laughed. “You were saying something about nationals, do you play a sport, Eiji-kun?”

“I play tennis. I’m a regular. I...I, uh.” He stopped and Hashimoto only smiled patiently. “I usually play doubles. I was a part of a nationally ranked doubles pair but recently, well, a while ago my partner got hurt. But then he said he was okay and our team has been doing really well and we’re in the national tournament!! But it turns out he lied and his wrist is still hurt and he can’t play and he kept it a secret and made a huge scene in front of our team when our captain came back and now I don’t have a double partner or best friend anymore.”

Once the words started flowing, he couldn’t stop them, but Hashimoto seemed to hear every single one of them.

“Sounds like you’ve been through a lot lately. But it must feel better to get it out though, yeah?”

“A little.” Eiji admitted, twisting his fingers together. “But it doesn’t solve anything. We were going to go to nationals together again...but win this time. It’s our last year’s the last chance we have.”

“Sounds stressful.”

“Um, yes.”

“It reminds me of the days that I did judo and competed...I was decent, but my heart was never really there. Though it sounds to me like you care a lot about tennis and your partner, enough to bottle up all those emotions and shout them to the heavens.”

Eiji was glad it was night time and that there was enough of a distance that Hashimoto couldn’t see him blushing. He had made a small fool of himself after all.

“Still...I don’t blame you for being angry. It’s never nice to have your trust broken by someone you care about. Relationships are built on trust and maintained by communication, so if one side isn’t doing that, it’ll come back and hurt the other at some point. I’m sorry that you had to learn that the hard way. But I also have a feeling that your partner didn’t mean it. You’re third years and made an incredible promise to go to nationals! That’s a lot to carry! And when he got injured, it probably hurt more to think about letting you down than the actual pain instead.”

Hashimoto’s words cut right through him. Eiji hadn’t thought about it that way. And considering how he let his emotions get the best of him and immediately assume the worse, well, he felt like crying again.

“Then to realize that his injury hadn’t healed, well. I’m sure he was scared and upset but mostly didn’t want to hurt you. You seem like a very caring person, Eiji-kun, I’m sure this is all a misunderstanding. If not, well, you can tell Haru to find me and beat me up, hehe.”

“Oi, Kazu, are you still up here? We need to go over formations for practice tomor- Eiji?” Haruki came into view, looking between the two of them. “ weren’t bothering Eiji were you?”

“Me? No! I was just making a new friend.” Hashimoto winked at Eiji before throwing an arm around Haruki’s shoulders. “Looks like it’s time for me to go but...remember what I said, Eiji-kun! Oh, and let Haru know about nationals! We’ll come cheer you on. We’re really good at it.”

Eiji waved until the door closed behind them. What a strange happening...but he was happy for it. He did feel much better than he did before coming up to the rooftop.

Carefully, closing his hand one finger at a time, he raised a fist out just like all the times he’d done it to connect with Oishi.

Tomorrow. Tomorrow after their match against Higa, he would try to talk to him. But first he had a singles match to get through.

ahh it's been a rly long time since i've written kikasa lol, i hope this is okay! i guess it came out as more of a straight up roleswap but i really liked the prompt, thanks for posting it!!!

Kasamatsu definitely has a problem with him. What it is, Kise’s not entirely sure yet, but neither his captainly authority nor his sparkling charms seem to have any impact on the tight-lipped glare that the little freshman always seems to be shooting him. He does what Kise says, because he’s very respectful, but he never laughs at Kise’s bad jokes or even speaks to him beyond what’s absolutely necessary for politeness. And worse, he pushes himself far beyond what Kise asks of his freshmen, to the point that Kise almost has to worry about him, even with his attitude problem. It irks Kise.

Which is why, genius that he is, he ends up volunteering to stay late for extra practice with Kasamatsu rather than letting his vice captain do it. It doesn't bother him at all to stay late; he does it more often than not anyway, sometimes with company and sometimes without. But Kasamatsu has been very determinedly ignoring Kise while they’ve been making practice shots, and when Kise offers to help him with his individual offense, Kasamatsu still seems to avoid his eyes as much as possible. Eventually Kise’s patience wears thin and he straightens up, tucking the ball under one arm and looking down at Kasamatsu with exasperation.

“Kasamatsu-kun.” Kasamatsu looks somewhere off to Kise’s left, crossing his arms over his chest. He’s panting from trying to outdo Kise, but still insisting on keeping up the same stubborn avoidance that’s been driving Kise crazy for weeks.

“Yes?” It takes every ounce of Kise’s self-control not to roll his eyes. He takes a deep breath through his nose, giving himself a second.

What is your problem?” And okay, maybe he should have taken two. His self-control has definitely frayed beyond what even his old Teikou teammates can usually push him to, his captainly authority nowhere in evidence, but it’s frustrating to deal with a person who’s so totally unwilling to work with him when he hasn't done anything but his best with them.

His tone gets Kasamatsu’s attention, anyway, the furrow between his eyebrows relaxing for a second as Kasamatsu finally looks at him before returning in full force.

“I’m sorry, senpai?”

Sighing, Kise reaches up to press the heel of his hand against his eye, trying to stave off the pressure he can feel building behind it. “I don't know what you think of me, Kasamatsu-kun, but I’m not stupid. Even if I were, it doesn't take a genius to figure out that you don't like me. You’re a good player and a hard worker, and I think you have a lot of potential. I want to help you as much as I can, but I can’t do that if you’re always avoiding me like this.”

“Hard worker? What does someone like you know about hard work?” As soon as the words leave his mouth, Kasamatsu snaps it shut again, his eyes dropping to the floor. It’s hard to tell, but Kise thinks he might be blushing, which softens the sharp flare of anger that shoots through his stomach at the question. He takes his time to get ahold of his temper, setting aside the urge to snap right back and instead gathering his thoughts to figure out the best way to answer. If Kasamatsu squirms a little in the long silence, Kise can’t bring himself to say he really minds.

“I see. So that’s what it’s about? I’m one of the Miracles, so I didn't have to work for any of it? I’m a naturally talented prettyboy who they just handed the captain title to without having earned it at all?” No answer.

“Hm. Well, I won’t tell you you’re totally wrong. It’s true, after I graduated from Teikou, it wasn't hard to become the best on a regular team.” Kasamatsu shifts, his fists curling tighter against his ribs, but he still doesn't say anything. Sighing through his nose at the ridiculous stubbornness, Kise gathers himself to keep going.

“But you know, I still lost. A lot. It’s not like I was the only Miracle around, and even with all of my talent, my team still lost over and over again. At first, it didn't really bother me that much. I still had my modeling career on my mind, and basketball had stopped being fun a long time ago.” Kise pauses, dribbling the ball lazily to buy himself a little time. “It still feels bad, though, right? Especially seeing all of my teammates. It didn't matter so much to me, but a lot of those guys, they really cared. And I’m flighty, sure, but you can't spend that much time around people and not care at all when they’re that broken up about something.

“So I did start to try, and to work. We still lost plenty, but this team helped me find what I love about basketball again. I’m grateful to them for that, and I’ll do everything in my ability to bring them every victory I can. I won't tell you I deserve to be captain here, but I work as hard as I can to be worthy of the belief my teammates have in me and the responsibility they’ve trusted me with.” When Kise looks back, Kasamatsu is watching him, intent and searching. Kise smiles at him, small and without any of his usual efforts to dazzle.

“I guess what I mean, Kasamatsu-kun, is that you don't have to like me. But I don't ever want you to think that because I used to be a Miracle this doesn't mean anything to me, or that I don't care about this team.”

Finally, Kasamatsu drops his arms and the wrinkle between his eyebrows smooths out. He’s still serious and unsmiling, but none of the sullen snarl Kise has gotten used to seeing on him is anywhere to be found as Kasamatsu shakes his head slowly.

“I don't think that, senpai. And… I’m sorry for being rude before. It wasn't right of me.” When he breaks eye contact this time, it’s a brief, guilty flash to the side that makes Kise grin.

“All is forgiven, Kasamatsu-kun!” Waving a hand dismissively, Kise dribbles the ball a few more times before tossing it back towards the cart he had retrieved it from. “But if you really wanted to make it up to me, I wouldn't say no to an ice cream. It’s getting hot again, don't you think?” Kasamatsu looks a little wide-eyed at the suggestion, and Kise can't help laughing at him. It’s kind of cute, and if he’s really always so serious, Kise thinks he’s going to have a lot of fun with his new kouhai this year.

Onoda toddled onto the playground and looked around a little nervously. It was so full of noisy other kids running around and shrieking! Some of them were chasing each other and some of them were fighting near the swings and--

He looked back at his mother, eyes big and blue behind his oversized round glasses, and she made a shooing gesture with her hands while smiling encouragingly.

Onoda’s lower lip trembled but he made himself face the playground and take another step forward. There had to be someone else who wasn’t playing with anyone!

...There! There was a boy in the corner, with short black hair and eyes as big as Onoda’s. Except they were black, not blue, but that was okay! He looked like he was quiet and just as new to the park as Onoda was!

Clutching his favorite stuffed toy, Nigou-san the husky, to his chest, Onoda headed towards the strange boy and then plopped down next to him.

“Hi,” he said, shining a bright, gap-toothed smile at the other boy, “I’m Onoda Sakamachi. What’s your name?”

“...” The boy stared at him as if not sure Onoda was actually addressing him or not, then finally said, “I’m Midousuji Akira.”

“Hi, Midousuji-kun.” Onodo pronounced the name carefully, not wanting to embarrass himself, and then held out Nigou-chan for Midousuji to see. “This is Nigou-chan. He’s my dog because my mother says I can’t have a real dog but Nigou-chan is just as good.”

“...Hello,” Midousuji said a little uncertainly. He reached out, grasped one fluffy stuffed limb and gave it a cautious shake. It seemed safer than trying to shake hands with the boy. Midousuji didn’t have any toys. Did that matter?

“Do you have any pets?” Onoda asked hopefully.

Midousuji shook his head no.

“...I named Nigou-san after a dog on Kuroko no Basuke! It’s a cartoon about basketball players. Do you like cartoons?”

Midousuji nodded.

Pleased to have found a starting point for their conversation, Onoda rattled away cheerfully about his favorite anime. When he discovered that Midousuji actually knew enough about his favorite Gundam shows to discuss them semi-knowledgeably, that was when their friendship was sealed.

After an hour, when Onoda’s mother finally called for him to come back, Onoda had decided that Midoushuji was his best friend and they were going to be friends forever! To make absolutely sure of it, he pushed Nigou-chan into Midousuji’s arms.

“He’ll look after you this week,” he said proudly. “Give him back to me next week, okay?”

Midousuji nodded quickly and for the first time since they’d met, Midousuji’s smile held no uncertainty.

thank you for giving me an excuse to revisit my orchestra days <3

Like all things that concern Akashi Seijuurou, the change does not become apparent right away. Akashi, in essence, is subtle until he's not, upon which he directs every eye in the room to himself.

But capable as he might be of turning heads wherever he goes with the sheer magnitude of his presence, he is otherwise a quiet man; quiet not for a lack of confidence, but for an excess of grandeur. Midorima has no description for Akashi, mid-solo, other than that of an emperor or a king, speaking through his violin as his subjects listen.

(If anyone ever told Akashi this, he would tilt his head and smile in that quizzical way of his, as if he hasn't a clue.)

For a moment, though, as he silently reads the set list for the upcoming concert, Akashi sheds his regalia and becomes something akin to a lost child. Uncertainty passes across his features like ink in water, spreading before it dissolves.

Like Midorima said, the change is subtle, something that no one but those beside him could've seen, and only if they knew him as well as Midorima does.

Then Akashi picks up his cloak and rights the crown on his head, and the moment leaves as quietly as it arrived.

Midorima does not ask him about it. It simply isn't done between the two of them. He does not envy the camaraderie of the other sections, soft and private laughter filling the silence between notes during rehearsal, nor the friendly rivalry they tend to develop among themselves like those idiots on cello. The piano was meant to be be solitary in the first place, and it isn't seldom that he thinks Akashi might feel the same about being concertmaster.

Though whatever Akashi's feelings may be, he still speaks in a tone gentler than Midorima's could ever attempt, possessing more authority that Midorima's could ever have. Midorima has his place at the outskirts of the stage, Akashi belongs in the center, and they can meet in the middle when rehearsal's done.

The conductor dismisses them and the symphony of instruments in unison is replaced by the cacophony of packing them up. Aomine walks past him, Momoi's double bass in one hand and his cello in the other, while Kuroko tails behind with his viola still in his grip, as if he still wants to squeeze in practice time in some hidden corner. Kise and the other flutists follow suit, their chatter an irritant in Midorima's ears, keeping him in place until they're gone. As if on cue, Murasakibara comes up to him, speaking around a lollipop.

"Mido-chin, I'm coming with you."

"I don't recall the two of us making plans together."

"Not just you," says Murasakibara in a drawl. "Aka-chin said he needs more rosin, and I need a new mallet."

"Akashi did not mention—"

"Ah, I think Atsushi may have assumed you would still accompany us to the store," interrupts Akashi, violin slung over his shoulder. His smile is pleasant, anticipatory. Midorima sighs, tucking his sheet music folder under his arm.

"If I must."

He lets them walk ahead, Murasakibara complaining about one thing or another and Akashi nodding in commiseration, and he though the thought crosses his mind more than once when he and Akashi find a moment alone, he does not ask about it.

"Something's on your mind, Shintarou."

It is the day of the concert, and the atmosphere is of equal parts excitement and nervousness, neither of which Midorima feels; he has done everything humanly possible in preparation for this, and all he has to do is exactly what's expected of him. It was not in the orchestra's best interest for Akashi to overturn that with distractions, so he must have another motive up his sleeve.

"And I assume you already know what it is," says Midorima, and Akashi's in amused expression is the yes, I do Midorima expected to hear.

"You're worried about me. You needn't be. The set list is perfect, and the ensemble is in top condition. It was a moment of weakness, which I have already overcome."

Midorima says nothing. Akashi's voice lowers as he speaks.

"The final piece was performed at the last concert I went to with my mother. She once said it was her favorite. For that reason, I haven't touched it since."

Since, in this instance, is too big a word to be contained in a few syllables. It spans a period of time that's immeasurable; it contains grief, and healing, and how neither of these processes ever really end. Midorima would put a hand on Akashi's shoulder, but it simply isn't done, between the two of them.

Instead, he says, "your hard work will not go unrewarded." It is what he himself would like to hear, and he begins to think it may not be what Akashi might have wanted until Akashi grants him a smile, as simple and as uncomplicated as hearing Vivaldi in the spring.

"Yes, I suppose it won't."
