Bonus Round 5: Clue

Clue

SASO 2017 is over, but this round is perpetually open to new fills (no new prompts).

Sometimes, all you need are a few little details to imagine something bigger. This round is inspired by a classic board game with a cast of colorful characters, but for SASO your only limits on "who", "where", and "with what" are what you can imagine (and the SASO fandom list, of course)!

This round closes on 5 August @ 7PM EDT. (Countdown Timer.)

Please read this whole post before commenting to ensure that your team gets the most points possible. (There are changes from last year!)

RULES
  • Submit prompts by commenting to this post with the format of a Clue mystery - "[character] in the [location] with [item]", along with any ship/ot3/etc. from one of our nominated fandoms.
    • Example: Sawamura Daichi in the teachers' lounge with the Hello Kitty! lunchbox
    • The person in your prompt MAY be a member of your ship, but is not REQUIRED to be part of your ship. They must still be a named character from a SASO-nominated fandom.
    • Your place must be a physical location, not a state of being or a state of being. However, this location is not required to be real, nor must it be from the same setting as the characters.
    • The "item" used must be a physical object that the character can hold or manipulate.
    • Unlike the board game, your prompt is NOT required to imply murder. The scenario implied can be anything at all! (As always, please tag properly!)
    • Your prompt MUST include some kind of relationship. Platonic relationships are indicated by an "&" between the names (e.g., Natsuo & Yuzuko). Non-platonic relationships use "/" (e.g., Natsuo/Yuzuko). Please don't say "Any pairing," either!
  • Fill prompts by replying to the prompt with your Clue-inspired fanwork.
  • Remember to follow the general bonus round rules, outlined here.
  • Here is a prompt/fill index for your convenience.

Really it's G-rated, but Arakita's bad mouth, you know how it is.

***

At first blush, Kinjou Shingo seemed like the easiest catcher Arakita had ever had to work with. He was quiet, reliable, and could hurl a fastball from home plate to second base quicker than most guys could even blink. He was big -- Arakita couldn’t believe they were the same height, Kinjou had at least two extra kilos of muscle on him and a posture to put lampposts to shame -- and every one of his senses seemed methodically cultivated, a walking portfolio of robust skillsets and quick reflexes.

That he had walloped Arakita’s high school team at nationals last year should probably have left Arakita with more lingering resentment than he had, but it was hard to hate the sturdy pillar-of-the-team types. After all, Fuku-chan had been like that too.

It all fell apart by their second practice, though, when Kinjou refused to run their plays without signs.

“I told you,” Arakita said, voice raised, pushing his gloved hand against Kinjou’s padded chestpiece like he’s actually got any chance of shoving him back. “I don’t need ‘em! I can smell what you’re thinkin’ just fine!”

“Even if that’s true,” Kinjou persisted, narrowed gaze obscured behind his mirrored red shades -- the sun was trending toward the horizon now, he had to keep it out of his eyes -- “it’s not going to work one hundred percent of the time. We need to work out our signals now, while we’re getting acquainted. Any more like this and bad habits will start to set in.”

“My habits work great,” Arakita countered, almost spitting, baring a full row of white teeth when he spoke now. “Fuku-chan never had a problem with it!”

“I’m not Fukutomi,” said Kinjou, “hard as that may be to believe.”

A peculiar anger began to rise up in Arakita’s throat as bile, so he spat instead, kicking at the soft dirt of the mound with his heel. Around them, the rest of Yonan’s first year players started to groan loudly: the time-out was running long now, and no one relished the idea of being last to the dining hall two days in a row. From second base, Machimiya shouted something about it being the wrong time for a lovers’ tiff.

Arakita couldn’t resist grinding his teeth at that one. Together with Kinjou’s remark, it was setting his temper right up to the edge.

“So just try it!” he snapped, giving Kinjou another mitt-covered shove against the chest. It was like trying to dislodge a pesky popcorn kernel that was determined to stay lodged in his teeth. “You’re a science major, yeah? Run a fuckin’ experiment, do half the plays with signs and half of ‘em without. I’ll wipe that smartass look right off your face.”

“From what you’re saying,” Kinjou answered, even-keeled both in tone and footing, without a trace of smartass anywhere, “the results would be meaningless. You’d just ‘smell’ my calls either way.”

“So I’ll plug my nose on the signed ones!”

“That’s exactly what I’m talking about,” the catcher sighed. He unlatched the straps of his face mask, sending another wave of groaning across the diamond. It signalled that Kinjou intended to drag this conversation out even further, which was probably exactly the message he wanted to send -- to direct some extra pressure onto Arakita from the team. “Your method leaves us one head cold away from fouling up an entire inning. Or suppose it’s raining, or pollen season--”

“--this is stupid, I can’t believe we’re even talkin’ about this--”

“--things you know very well will leave you useless,” Kinjou continued, over the interruption. With the mask off, Arakita could see the deep crease of his mouth as he frowned; the way his short canine eyebrows bunched together above his sunglasses. “What is the blocker here, Arakita? What do you need from me in order for this to work?”

“I didn’t ask to get put in a battery with you--”

This time it was Kinjou who moved -- grabbing Arakita’s bicep with his free hand and squeezing until his grip was just shy of painful. Arakita’s mouth opened, prepped for some objection, but the outrage melted before it had a chance to form, as he realized Kinjou had very specifically grabbed his left arm, because the possibility injuring a pitcher’s throwing arm -- however accidentally, no matter if it was in a sudden burst of anger or frustration -- was unthinkable to him.

Arakita’s jaw clicked shut. He met Kinjou’s gaze from behind his rose-colored shades.

“I’m not Fukutomi,” Kinjou told him, again. “If you were in need of someone like him, you would have followed him to Meisou, wouldn’t you? Instead you chose Yonan. Why?”

A hissed breath through clenched teeth. “Because if I stuck with him -- another four years, same catcher, same batters, same clean-up… I’d never…”

“Yes?”

A younger him would have choked on his tongue and died rather than say the words that came next.

“...Because I’d never get any better,” Arakita ground out. He wasn’t looking at Kinjou anymore, but somewhere past him, at… something. Where a certain captain had once told him to look for a horizon.

Just as swiftly as he had grabbed it, Kinjou’s hand vanished from around Arakita’s arm. He really was snakelike, the way he moved sometimes. Kinjou patted his catcher’s mitt against the pitcher’s shoulder, his deep-set expression finally starting to shift upward into something more conspiring.

“Then we work on signs first,” Kinjou told him. “Any additional tool we can add to your arsenal is a good one. And won’t that surprise Fukutomi, when we face off against Meisou in the rain and you strike out every one of his batters?”

“Heh…” Damn, that little grin was infectious too. This guy was trouble. “Yeah, that’d be a good one.”

“Glad you agree, partner.”

“HAVE YOU KISSED AND MADE UP YET?” Machimiya shouted from second base, hands cupped over his mouth like an improvised megaphone. The sun had all but dipped below the treeline now.

“First order of business,” Kinjou continued, slipping his gear back on. “On the next batter, try a fastball so straight down the center it’ll sail right over your head and into Machimiya’s face.”

This got a snort out of Arakita, and the nastiest smirk he’d worn since before his last year of high school nationals. He adjusted his cap. “You’re not so bad, Kinjou.”

My HC is this is why he chose Yonan, moreso than having the major he wanted. He loves his pack but he's worried about stagnating ;w; ...Of course originally he just didn't pass Meisou's entrance exam, but whatever, sensei changes things according to his whims so I can too...

KINARA BEING THE SAME HEIGHT IS LIKE, THE THING THAT MURDERS ME EVERY TIME, IT IS MY ABSOLUTE FAVORITE. Thank you for the lovely prompt <3 <3
