While Yui knew that having Kiyoko as the poster girl of the club would elevate their status, she hadn't expected this level of turnout at their booth during the cultural festival for new students. Unfortunately, most of the turn out were overeager boys, not exactly the demographic Yui is looking to recruit for the girls' volleyball club.
So far, Yui has only met two first years interested in joining the club and has spent most of her time shooing away Tanaka and Nishinoya from the boys' club.
"Any luck?" Chizuru asks when she drops by in the afternoon. Yui and Kiyoko are still manning the booth, despite the obvious decrease in foot traffic. She looks at the tables around them. "The chess club seems to be popular."
"Don't be discouraged," Kiyoko says in that quiet but definite voice of hers. "Quality is more important than quantity."
Chizuru just nods before running off. "Hay hay, Captain!"
"Co-captain," Kiyoko corrects while turning to Yui, effectively making Yui blush.
That's when someone makes a sounds akin to a small puppy. They turn to find a small blonde girl in front of the table, looking unsure. "E-excuse me."
"Do you play volleyball?!" Yui asks immediately, leaning over the table.
"Um."
Yui continues. "Do you want to play volleyball? No experience necessary. We can teach you the basics!"
Kiyoko puts a hand on Yui's arm. "Let her talk."
The blonde looks frantically between Yui and Kiyoko before saying, in a small voice, "I'm looking for the art club's booth?"
Yui can feel herself deflate. "Oh. It's five tables down, around the corner."
"I-um, I've never played volleyball, or any sport," the blonde says. "I didn't really participate in any clubs in middle school, so I thought I'd give the art club a try... Sorry for rambling!"
"What's your name?" Kiyoko asks gently.
"Ah-sorry! I'm Yachi Hitoka from Class 1-5." Yachi flushes.
Kiyoko gives Yui a look before turning to Yachi again. "Would you like to come watch us play volleyball? We've been practicing with the boys' club and our line up this year is the best it has ever been."
"Really?" Yachi asks, looking like she'd be equally impressed if Kiyoko had told her about grass or the bathroom.
"Yeah," Yui adds with a grin. "We’re still in need of a manager. If you like what you see, maybe you can stick around?"
Yachi looks uncertain, but she nods regardless. "I've never participated in an all girls sport."
"It's the best," Yui tells her and means it.
Kiyoko gives Yachi her signature smile, and Yui knows it's a done deal. "We are practicing tomorrow after class. Please come to the gym and watch us."
The smile Yachi gives them is equally lovely. "I look forward to it!"
