"If you ever need something, just ask," Kinjou said as he and Makishima stood by the security checkpoint in the airport. "I mean it. I don't care what it is; if you just need to not speak English for awhile, I'll call. If you need me over there in person, I'll be there."

"I'll be fine, Kinjou," Makishima said nonchalantly as he took back his suitcase.

"I know, but the offer's there. Now go show the world your style. I'll miss you."

"I'll miss you too."

Makishima wheeled his suitcases into the line for security, waving at Kinjou one last time before he passed through the gates. Kinjou stayed where he was for far longer, watching through the glass until Makishima boarded the plane.

For the first few months Makishima was abroad, Kinjou e-mailed regularly, and Makishima replied sporadically as he was wont to do. It was nearly three months later when Kinjou received a cryptic e-mail, sent from England in the wee hours of the morning.

To: kinjou@yonan.edu
From: peak_spider@yahoo.co.jp
Subject:
Kinjou, do you remember what you said at the airport?
Kinjou immediately sent back a reply.

I do, and I meant it. Why?
He didn't get a reply immediately, but when he checked his mailbox the next day, he found an envelope shipped overnight from England. Inside was a single plane ticket with the hastily scribbled note:
If the offer's still on. I think I need you here.
He didn't stop to think. He immediately e-mailed his professors to say he'd be out for a few days, left a message for Arakita asking him to get any relevant assignments from Kinjou's classmates, went back to his room to pack the essentials, and messaged Makishima to let him know he was on his way.

When he arrived in England many hours later, he looked around the arrivals gate for familiar green hair, but he didn't see anyone. It wasn't until several minutes later that he saw a taxi driver waiting and holding up a sign with his name. He was surprised when he got into the taxi, and he was even more surprised several minutes later when it dropped him off in front of a hospital.

He was distracted checking his phone for any updates from Makishima when he first walked through the doors, but as soon as he looked up, he saw the familiar hair he had been looking for earlier pacing by the far windows.

"Makishima," he called out as he approached.

Makishima turned slowly toward him. "Kinjou?" he asked as if he wasn't sure he believed what he was saying.

"I got your message."

"You came," Makishima said, hugging him awkwardly and then collapsing against him.

"What happened?" Kinjou asked as he guided Makishima into the nearest chair.

"Ren was in an accident. He was hit by a car."

"I'm sorry, Makishima. How is he?"

"He was in surgery for nine hours yesterday. He's back in surgery now. They've kept him sedated since the accident. The doctors don't seem too optimistic, but they aren't giving up yet."

"When was the last time you ate?" Kinjou asked.

Makishima looked at him blankly. "Since the accident? I'm not really sure. I think someone brought me something yesterday."

"And I'm guessing you haven't slept either?"

Makishima shook his head. "Too nervous."

"Stay here," Kinjou ordered as he stood. "I'm going to get us both something to eat; I'll be right back."

Makishima nodded.

Kinjou found someone to direct him to the cafeteria in the hospital and picked out food for both Makishima and himself. He hadn't really eaten since leaving Japan himself, and from the sound of it, Makishima hadn't eaten in even longer.

He hurried back to the waiting area and found Makishima staring blankly at the wall.

"Here," Kinjou said, pressing a bottle of orange juice into Makishima's hands. "Drink."

As he ate his own sandwich, he kept an eye on Makishima. Once the juice was gone, he handed Makishima a container of yogurt. He had tried to pick food that wouldn't sit too badly on a completely empty stomach; the last thing he wanted was to make Makishima feel any worse than he already was.

"Did they give an estimate of how long the surgery would take?" Kinjou asked when they finished eating.

"Not really," Makishima replied. "They weren't certain exactly what they'd need to do, so they weren't even willing to give an estimate."

"There's nothing we can do right now other than wait, so why don't you try to get at least a little sleep. I'll wake you up if anyone comes over."

"Are you sure? You've been traveling, and—"

"I'll be fine. You need sleep more than I do right now," Kinjou said, running his fingers through Makishima's hair until Makishima fell asleep on his shoulder.

A few hours later, someone in scrubs burst through the door and headed in their direction. Kinjou shook Makishima awake, then stepped aside to give the surgeon some privacy as he spoke with Makishima.

As soon as the surgeon left, Makishima waved Kinjou back. "Ren's stable for now," he said. "They're going to keep him sedated for another day to be safe, but we can go see him for a few minutes now. They're estimating he'll probably be here for another week or so."

"That's great news," Kinjou said. "Here's what we're going to do: you'll go and see Ren for a few minutes, and then we'll go back to your place so you can get some proper rest. Starting tomorrow, you tell me what you need, and I'll take care of it. You need someone to help make phone calls, I can do that. You need someone to do the dishes so you can take care of other things, I can do that too."

"You're sure, Kinjou?"

"I'm sure. It's why I'm here. Now let's go see Ren."

A little over a week later, two days after Ren had been released from the hospital, Kinjou and Makishima were standing in the airport.

"I feel like a bad boyfriend," Makishima said. "You came all the way out here, and I didn't even show you around."

"There were other more important things to take care of," Kinjou corrected. "You can always invite me back under better circumstances and give me the proper tour."

He gave Makishima a final hug goodbye before heading to the security check. He was halfway there when he paused. "The offer still stands," he called back over his shoulder. "It's not a one-time use."
