Shintarou's mornings are quiet and rushed and on the days that he has work, and soft and slow on the days he does not. Regardless of which it is, they always begin in the same way: with Kazunari in his arms.

It's a day off today, and there's no alarm to pull Shintarou out of his sleep. Kazunari has the day off as well and he's still sleeping peacefully, his face pressed against Shintarou's chest. Shintarou rests his palm flat against the bare skin of Kazunari's back and he can feel each deep breath as it's taken, in the gentle rise and fall beneath his hand.

Shuffling a little so that they're both more comfortable, Shintarou decides to stay in bed for a little longer. He's tired, after all, from working long shifts at the hospital, from having to leave home early and return late. He hasn't had the chance to do this in a while, to just lie in bed and memorise the way Kazunari feels in his arms.

Perhaps he's come to take it for granted, because it's such a regular occurrence now and they're both usually in too much of a hurry on work mornings to put much thought into it. Shintarou doesn't remember what it's like to not have Kazunari in his arms, can't even conceptualise what it would be like not to have Kazunari in his life. He knows there was a point, somewhere in his past that feels far too distant, when he didn't even know the name Takao Kazunari or the person it was attached to. He can separate his life into before and after, if he wants, but he no longer remembers what before even felt like. He pities his past self for what he didn't have, and it feels like pitying a stranger that he has no connection to.

"Shin-chan?" Kazunari asks as he wakes, his voice still thick with sleep. "You okay? You're squeezing me really tight."

Loosening his grip, Shintarou kisses Kazunari on the forehead. "I apologise."

"Is something wrong?" Kazunari asks, nuzzling into the curve of Shintarou's neck. He's tactile at the best of times, and it's further amplified when he's tired.

Shintarou exhales softly, stroking his fingers through Kazunari's hair. "Nothing is wrong, in fact. Everything is wonderful."

"Slow mornings are nice, huh?" Kazunari smiles, pressing a kiss to Shintarou's cheek. "Have you listened to the Oha Asa station yet?"

"No," Shintarou murmurs, watching as Kazunari reaches over to turn their bedside radio on.

He can already tell that it's going to be a good day for Cancer.
