“Eww!” Kikumaru balked, his feline ears laying flat on his head. He backed away, retreating into Oishi’s side. Oishi seemed to be equally squeamish, a look of concern contorting his face.

“Oh, good. You found him,” Inui said, coming up along side the pair of them. His black robes were slightly singed, but that was hardly an unusual state for them; they were often covered in far more distasteful things.

On the ground was Kaidou, and he was far worse off than Inui’s robes. The attacking party had been a bit too much, managing to pierce through both Kaidou’s armor and his thick, draconic skin.

He was in far more pieces than any one party member should be.

“Well, nothing to do but gather him up,” Inui said, rolling up the sleeves of his robes. “Would you mind lending me a hand?”

“Inui, his brains aren’t even in his head anymore,” Kikumaru said, wrinkling his nose.

“Hmm.” Inui reached out and grabbed Kaidou’s muzzle, tilting it to examine his head. “Right. Well, nothing to do but just shove them back in. I find the eye socket to be the best way to go.” He was already tilting the head the right way, prying the more damaged eye open. “Mind handing the brain to me?”

Kikumaru gagged. “Okay, I’m leaving. Good luck with the Kaidou thing.”

Inui frowned, but said nothing as he set about gathering the pieces of Kaidou together himself.

Kaidou awoke in Inui’s workshop, his eyes slowly fluttering open while Inui was still in the middle of stitching his abdomen shut. It wouldn’t be an issue, Inui knew from experience. Kaidou’s pain sensations were far too dulled to register as simple a repair as this.

Kaidou’s hand shot up, running over his skull.

“It’s all there,” Inui said simply. “Most of your original skull bone too, though I did have to supplement a little. I also took the liberty of applying a potion to stimulate hair regrowth. I had to shave it clean while I was working up there.”

Kaidou hissed at that, and Inui smiled. Kaidou raised his other arm, only to find his hand missing. “Don’t worry. That’s next on my list.”

Kaidou huffed and let his arm fall to his side. “Sorry, senpai.”

Inui tied off the suture he was on, and reached over to grab the pan that Kaidou’s hand was sitting in. “Sorry for what?”

“I keep messing up.”

Inui picked up Kaidou’s hand, clawed and scaled, and turned it over. He sat down on the worktable, next to Kaidou, and lined up the hand with the matching wrist. “You have nothing to apologize for. It can be hard getting used to. You’re not as durable as you once were.”

Kaidou grimaced. “Now that I’m dead you mean.”

“You’re not dead,” Inui said. “You’re here, aren’t you?”

“Because you’re keeping me alive.” He flinched as Inui pierced his skin with a needle, and began stitching again. “If you weren’t a necromancer…”

“You said it yourself. I’m ‘keeping you alive’. So by definition, you aren’t dead.”

“That seems like an excuse, senpai.”

Inui shrugged.

“Why do you keep me alive anyway?”

Inui smiled again as he tied off his sutures again, finished reattaching the hand. He rubbed a salve over it, to let the magic finish mending the muscle and bone beneath it. “I suppose you’ll have to stay alive long enough to find out.”
