The uncertain future stretches out in front of him like a deep, dark lake that he can't see into no matter how hard he tries.
He stands on the shore, letting it reach his toes, but he isn't sure how he's going to navigate his way across. He doesn't know what's waiting on the other side from him and he still isn't entire sure that he wants to find out.
Of all the possibilities, the one thing that terrifies him he most is the possibility that he'll make his way across and discover that wherever he finds himself, once he's on the other side, Tooru isn't there with him.
He doesn't know how to deal with it and he swallows it down, determined not to let it show. He has faith in Tooru, he has faith in them both. He doesn't want to let himself doubt any of it.
Except Tooru can see it anyway. He reads through all the masks that Hajime wears, just as easily as Hajime does with him. He can read Hajime's deepest fears in the lines of his frown and he kisses them until Hajime is at ease, until those lines disappear.
"You don't have to worry about anything at all," Tooru tells him and it might be easier said than done but Hajime feels like he can believe it a little more when Tooru says it, rather than when he tells it to himself. "I'll be there. Of course I will be. You're not going to get rid of me that easily, you know."
Hajime laughs, but the sound comes out choked. He buries his face into the side of Tooru's neck, taking refuge in his warmth, in his familiarity.
"Yeah, you're not going to get away from me either," Hajime replies, and Tooru has always made him feel like absolutely anything is possible. This is no different. "Whatever waits for us in the future, we'll get there together."
"If you ever lose your way," Tooru says, pressing a light kiss to Hajime's lips, "all you need to do is listen out for me. You've helped me stay on the right track even when I felt like I was falling off. Let me guide you too."
"You always do," Hajime murmurs, their palms pressed against each other, their fingers slotting together, and it suddenly feels ridiculous to worry that they'll ever be apart. This is the one place in the world where Hajime belongs. Nothing's going to change that. "I'll be right there with you. If I lose you, I'll find you again. I promise."

"Good," Tooru murmurs, kissing Hajime again. "Me too."
