Takahiro wakes up to a mural of an aquarium painted on the wall outside of his apartment. It's enchanted, filled with all kinds of fish with brightly coloured scales. He watches them swim back and forth across the painted water as he drinks his morning coffee, and smiles to himself.
He goes downstairs afterwards with a can of paint and a brush. There are people walking past and admiring the mural but no one who looks like they're responsible for it. Takahiro knew better than to expect to meet the artist behind the mural but he's disappointed all the same. He already wants to talk to them, swapping tips about mixing their paint with magic.
He carefully touches his dry brush to the mural, just to test whether it's been protected by magic. He knows that artists sometimes do, to keep their murals from being painted over. This one isn't, just left there for people to interact with as they please, and so Takahiro adds to it, painting coral at the bottom of the tank, smiling as the fish come to swim through it when he's done.
He goes to work and by the time he comes home, he finds some new fish painted into the mural. He recognises the original artist's style and grins. Whoever they are, they must live close by and they don't seem to mind Takahiro adding to it.
Over the next few days, it becomes something of a routine. Takahiro wakes up and drinks his coffee as he takes in the changes that have been made to the mural. He adds something of his own before he leaves to work, and then comes home to yet another addition.
On the second day, someone paints over the aquarium entirely. Takahiro paints it back, leaving the blue of the water and a crab that waves its pincers threateningly at anyone to walks too close.
He gets home to find a hermit crab. He grins, going to his apartment to change and grab his paint, before he goes back downstairs. He's already planning on painting jellyfish when he realises that there's someone else already painting them into the mural.
"Holy shit," Takahiro says, recognising the art style even while it's still coming together. "Is it you? Aquarium guy?"
"Hey," the other guy says, turning around. He eyes the paint bucket and brush in Takahiro's hands. "Coral guy?"
Takahiro grins. "I'm Hanamaki."
"Matsukawa," comes the reply. "What were you going to paint?"
"Same thing you are. Great minds, huh?"
Matsukawa grins. "You can say that again. How about we fill this tank with jellyfish, then get some coffee together?"
Takahiro gives Matsukawa a matching grin. "Definitely."
