"It's warming up, over here," Masako says over their video call, and she's doing the best to keep the hope out of her voice. Most people, she knows, wouldn't even hear it but Alex isn't most people.
"You say that, but I think that our definitions of warm are quite different," Alex laughs. From what Masako can see, she's sitting in a bath tub, her tail visible at the edge of the screen. She's probably at Kagami's place. Tokyo is close, but not close enough.
"You came up here to visit once before," Masako points out.
"In summer, yeah."
"I met you during the Winter Cup. You transformed yourself to have legs. You didn't look that uncomfortable."
"You've seen the snow in Akita, right?" Alex laughs, and Masako knows that it's not an actual question. Masako is, after all, a yuki onna. She knows exactly what the snow is like. "I'm a warm water mermaid, Masako. If I come up to visit you, I'll die."
"Dying isn't as bad as it sounds," Masako murmurs, resting her chin in her hand. "I could always spare you from the cold, you know. If it gets that bad. You know the legends. You know they're true."
Alex sighs. "What if you filled your tub for me? That's probably easier than waiting until I'm on the brink of death and using your magic to keep me alive."
"I could do that. I'll buy more jackets for you so you can stay warm, if you feel like walking around. Otherwise, you won't really be able to move about."
With a soft chuckle, Alex shakes her head. "If I'm coming up to visit, I don't expect that either of us will be spending much time getting out of the house anyway. Or bed."
Masako hums, the corners of her lips curving into a smile as Alex winks at her on the screen. "You have a point there. Does this mean you'll visit, then?"
"It means I'm thinking about it," Alex replies firmly, and Masako knows her well enough to know that it means it's only a matter of time. She should probably start cleaning the bathtub. And the rest of the apartment, while she's at it.
"School holidays are coming up soon," Masako points out. "I'll have more time for you if you visit then. We might not actually have to leave the house at all."
"Damn it," Alex sighs, and Masako hides her smile behind her hand.
