Everyone had always said Eijun had been born with a great gift (even if he thought of it more as a curse). That was- until the day he met the most unusual, and at the same time captivating fox while traversing through the forest.
You see Eijun’s gift was he could talk with animals. Where others would hear squeaks, and squawks, and growls, words formed to Eijun’s ears and he could strangely enough communicate with them. Earning his fair share of odd looks and retreating animals in his wake of the ‘one strange human’ they had encountered.
He had, of course, gotten himself miserably lost in the twisting canopies of leaves, and old hardly-used trails until Eijun was deep into the heart of the forest. Barely even a breath of wind with creatures a distant noise from Eijun’s sensitive ears, until, he came across a frail fox caught within the sharp teeth of a very large steel trap.
“Shhhh… how long have you been caught in there?” Eijun tried to soothe the weak, startled fox, his own reflection caught within the wide eyes.
“You… you can understand me? And… I can hear you…” it managed to mumble out before a shudder of pain raked through the fox’s body, shock already well past set in to the battle between hypothermia, blood loss, and starvation.
“I can and you’ll need to lay perfectly still for me to be able to get you out,” Eijun reaching into his hip pouch to find the right tools he needed, gingerly setting to work on loosening the iron jaws from around the fox’s trapped hind leg.
Slowly and ever-so carefully loosening the screws and coils holding the jaws tight, until Eijun had enough slack in the tension so the fox could slide out his injured leg, the trap once again slamming shut in its own form of anger.
Eijun concerned with the fox’s shallow breathing and frail appearance before he remembered the water flask attached to his hip, bringing it to the parched animal’s lips before it gulped down what it could manage before passing out cold. Fear running ice cold in Eijun’s veins as his years of survival training finally kicked in with a dangerous situation in his midst.
He scoured the nearby brush until he found the herbs and berries needed to make a disinfectant paste, tearing off clothing from his own shirt to bind the wound firmly from any other irritants. Managing to fashion a sling of sorts to support and carry the fox close to his chest while Eijun fought against the forest.
Praying he was heading the right direction and would make it back to the village with enough time to save the fox’s life now hanging in his hands.

It took hours to battle his way through the brush but thankfully Eijun had left early enough in the morning before getting hopelessly lost to escape the last clumps and coils of vine by the late afternoon. Managing to find the trail back to the small village on the outskirts where he had stabled his horse for the day.
Hooves sent flying across the ground once Eijun discovered the veterinarian was out of town, fox cradled close to his chest as he made the desperate ride back to his own home town.
The thundering beat of hooves growing louder as he tried to keep the fox warm against his chest, breathing seeming to grow even more fragile until he finally arrived at the town’s outskirts. Skidding to a stop just outside the door before hastily tying his horse, and making his way gingerly inside.
All the vet could tell him is that he seemed to have found one lucky fox. Removing the bandaging and properly cleaning and stitching the wound, he had no idea how it had survived for likely almost a week in the forest tethered to a steel trap.
Although Eijun was determined to find out once the fox properly woke up, managing to tube feed some nutrients and liquids into the poor creature before the vet decided it was the best he could do, letting Eijun off with a nod and ‘promise to pay me back later’ when he attempted to pay for the fox’s care.
The sun sinking towards the horizon as Eijun headed back outside, a little more relaxed and the bundle warmer against his chest as he again set out on horseback for home.
Thankful for the help in the stables to grab and attend to his horse while he rushed the fox inside out of the chilly air.
Retreating from anyone else in the house to escape to his own room, settling the fox in a nest of blankets on his bed before quietly slipping away to the kitchen for a much-needed meal.
Eijun working his magic to have his fill of warming stew and bread in no time from the cook, eaten hastily as he didn't want to leave the fox alone for too long in his room. Also managing to talk his way into a spare portion to sneak back to his room just in case (and in hope) the fox would be awake when he returned.
Soft steps in the hallways as he took care to open and close his door gingerly, not seeing any movement under the bundle of blankets as he stepped over the threshold to set the extra food onto a side table.
Eijun retreating to his wardrobe to peel off his torn clothing from the day, slipping into his sleeping shirt and pants before making his way back to the bed.
Startled when the covers went flying from the bed, and even more shocked to find a sea of toned, tanned, and exposed skin on display instead of the expected bundle of fur and fluffy ears.
Eyes opening slowly to reveal copper orbs that set his insides alight, the man stretching languidly on Eijun’s bed without a care in the world; sleek moonlight leaving dustings of light freckles against his skin.
“Miyuki…” A harsh raspy voice began before Eijun could hand him a glass of water from his night stand, the liquid devoured in seconds as the man began to speak once more. “My name is Miyuki Kazuya, and I am forever in your debt Sawamura Eijun.”
The slow curl of Miyuki’s smirk turning his insides to jelly at just how handsome the stranger was how lying completely naked in his bed… thinking about the disappearing fox and the appearance of this stranger and noticing immediately the same glowing, captivating eyes held by both.
