Inui continued reading from the two hefty tomes suspended in mid-air in front of him while his hands were occupied. One hand steadily stirred a cauldron while the other hand was tangled deeply into Kaidou’s hair. Kaidou’s head was resting in Inui’s lap as he sat cross-legged on the floor of the dusty, beaten down shack. It was hardly a properly laboratory, but it was Inui’s best option for not getting caught in his secret work.
Kaidou made a groaning sort of noise into Inui’s thigh. Inui paused, before moving his hand to stroke Kaidou once again. Luckily, Kaidou wouldn’t transform tonight — the full moon had been last night, and so tonight would only bring discomfort, but not a rampage. Inui did his best to soothe him.
Only Kaidou was supposed to know about the shack, a secret place where he could transform, contained, and no one would be the wiser about sharing their school with a werewolf.
It had been easy for Inui to figure out that his underclassmen suffered from werewolfry. Only slightly harder to find the secret tunnel to the shack. And after that, sneaking out the books from the library which had pertained to becoming an animagus had been child’s play.
Inui felt a flutter in the pit of his stomach. He was close. He had worked on this process nearly every night since the idea had occurred to him, mere weeks after learning Kaidou’s secret. He had spent nearly every night in the attic of this shack, save for the ones where Kaidou transformed and raged within, alone.
One full moon, curiosity had gotten the best of Inui, and he’d crawled as far as he dared down the passageway to the shack. He’d been scared to death that Kaidou would smell him, and his animal mind would try to hunt him down. Kaidou hadn’t seemed to notice, or if he did, his rages didn’t seem to intensify. Inui had stayed there and read by wandlight for as much of the night as he could.
(Kaidou had said later, from what little he could remember, that it had been the most peaceful night he had passed as a werewolf.)
If all went well, before the year was through, Inui would be able to do a lot more than just wait and listen.
“It’s ready, I think,” Inui said.
Kaidou lifted his head, slightly groggy. “Really?”
Inui nodded, and let the books he was reading fall to the floor. (Everyone already thought the shack was haunted; a few extra bumps wouldn’t draw any attention.) Inui reached out and fished a pair of tongs through the cauldron, until it pulled out a boiled mandrake leaf.
“One month,” Inui said, transferring the leaf gingerly from tongs to his fingers. “I won’t be able to speak much, not until your next transformation.
Kaidou nodded, very seriously. “That’s fine. I’ll speak for both of us.”
Inui raised his eyebrows at that.
Kaidou shrunk a bit at the scrutiny, but continued, “I mean. Neither of us talk that much.”
Inui shrugged, accepting the point. Without further adieu, he opened his mouth. Kaidou reached out, stopping his hand before he could put in the mandrake leaf.
“Wait, before you do that,” Kaidou said.
“Yes?”
Kaidou was hesitating again, but seemed to steel himself the longer the moment stretched on. He leaned forward, and before Inui could ask, Kaidou kissed him.
Inui gaped at him. “I… of course, Kaidou.” Inui was pretty sure they were both blushing, but it was hard to see in the low light. He calculated that it was fairly likely though.
Inui opted to kiss Kaidou one more time, before sealing the leaf away in his mouth.

Kaidou leaned away quickly, averting his eyes. “Thank you, senpai. For… everything.”
