Chris frowns as the god of the underworld grins back at him, slumping easily in his throne.
“You know, that’s not the most original request I’ve heard,” Miyuki says, tapping his fingers on the arm of his throne. “But I have to say, coming from you, it’s got a better ring to it.”
Chris tries not to show any sort of disrespect, considering that he’s quite literally in Miyuki’s realm, but has trouble biting back some choice words. He finally settles on, “So, is it a deal?”
Miyuki tilts his head, before shifting his weight and rocking straight up out of his throne to stand. He doesn’t say anything, just circles Chris, appraising him. Chris follows him with his eyes, as much as he can without turning his body. On Miyuki’s second lap around, he reaches out a finger and grazes it along the line of Chris’s jaw, tipping his head back. Chris doesn’t fight it, but he can’t hold back a small scowl.
“It’s just interesting,” Miyuki says. “Since you’re not quite all human, right?” He moves Chris’s face, with no greater hold on it than the index finger now jabbed just under the point of Chris’s chin. “Otherwise you wouldn’t’ve got all the way down here.”
Chris frowns. “You’re right.”
Miyuki shrugs with a grin, seeming to accept that as praise.
“Do we have a deal or not?” Chris presses.
Miyuki clicks his tongue. “Maybe. Tell me, what kind of mortal lures a not-quite-mortal like yourself down here?”
“His name is Zaizen Naoyuki,” Chris says.
Miyuki smirks, but it has a sinister glint to it. “That’s not really what I asked, is it? What makes him so special?”
Chris pauses, setting his jaw firmly.
“Well?” Miyuki asks. “Incredibly smart? Strong?” He stop to leer slightly. “Handsome?” Chris doesn’t say anything for a beat, which is apparently a touch too long for Miyuki. “Come on now, suddenly you’re not so talkative?”
“I guess you could say he’s those things,” Chris says. “But that’s not why I’m here.”
Miyuki raises his eyebrows. “Really then? Go on.”
Chris sets his jaw firmly. “He’s… mine… That’s all you need to know.”
Miyuki looks amused at that. “Oh, possessive. Well, that is interesting…”
“So?” Chris asks.
Miyuki walks back over to his throne, and sits on the edge of it. “Well, you lay out a good argument, but we still haven’t quite figured out what’s in it for me, have we?”
Chris frowns. “Anything.”
Miyuki’s eyes widen. “Well. I didn’t expect you to go all in so soon. Wouldn’t you like to hear what I had in mind?”
Chris stares him down.
Miyuki only shrugs. “I’ll take that as a yes. Fine. You can take your mortal, and if you can walk him right back out the way you came, you can have him back, no strings attached.”
Chris frowns. “But?”
Miyuki grins. “But if you can’t safely return him to the land of the living, I keep him. No second shots, Takigawa.”
Chris nods. “Fine.”
“One more thing,” Miyuki says, holding out a finger. “I get you.”
“What?”
“Or rather, your immortality,” Miyuki says. “After all, you stay immortal, and you have as many shots as you want, in all honesty. If you can’t get him back out, I want dibs on your immortal soul. Which means if you fail to get him out, even if you manage to get out yourself, someday you’ll end up…” He stands, walking towards Chris again. “Right. Back. Here,” he says, punctuating each word with a step. “How about that? Your mortal still worth it?”
“Yes.”
Miyuki’s eyes widen. “And with no hesitation. I’m impressed.”
Chris glares at him.
Miyuki waves a hand. “Fine, fine. I’ll show you to him. But, there’s another thing you should know…”
“Of course there is,” Chris grumbles.
Miyuki grins. “The living can’t look upon a ghost on the way out of the underworld. Doing so banishes them back to the depths. That’s just the way it is. If you look at him at an point, that’s a failure. So, you’ll just need to trust that I’m giving up the right ghost.”
“And how will I know you’re not tricking me?” Chris asks with a scowl.
Miyuki leans towards him, still grinning. “Well, that’s just part of the gamble, isn’t it, Takigawa?”
