Everyone from Beauxbatons is gorgeous, and Kuroo feels her breath catch in her throat from the very moment they walk in through the doors of the Great Hall. She hears the murmurs that travel through the entire Hogwarts student body, regardless of gender, and knows that she's not the only one who thinks so.
Most of the students from Beauxbatons are aware of the effect that they're having on the people around them. Kuroo wonders just how many of them have some Veela blood in them, because they're graceful as they walk through the hall to the table that has been set aside specially for them. Every head in the hall turns as one, following their movements.
She doesn't think that anyone at Hogwarts really starts thinking of the Beauxbatons students individually for a while, and Kuroo knows that she's guilty of it too. They frequently stick together, seeking familiarity in an unfamiliar environment, and no one really seems brave enough to approach them when they're in groups like that.
The first time Kuroo sees one of them on her own, she's in the library doing her homework.
Of course the Beauxbatons students have school work to do while they're here for the Triwizard Tournament too. Kuroo has seen them taking their lessons together in empty classrooms around the school, while she walks from one class to the next. They have homework to do, too.
There's no one else sitting at the table with the Beauxbatons girl, even though there are plenty of people just staring at her. Kuroo takes a deep breath, carrying her book bag over and putting her things down on the table, opposite to the girl.
"Do you mind if I sit here?"
She barely even looks up from her book. "I don't mind."
Kuroo sits, and feels a few Hogwarts students' eyes on her, like they're vicariously living through her. She does her best to ignore it, and she's about to ask for the girl's name, just to be polite, when she takes a look at the textbook sitting open on the table.
"Do you take Ancient Runes?" Kuroo blurts out instead, and this time, the girl looks up. "It doesn't get offered until the later years, here. Do they start early at Beauxbatons?"
"Not really. I can't take the subject yet, but I'm interested in it. I thought I might do some extra reading, while I was here."
"I taught myself Elder Futhark when I was ten," Kuroo says, and perhaps she should be embarrassed about just how eager she sounds, but it makes the girl from Beauxbatons look up, suddenly interested.
"I love Elder and Younger Futhark," she replies earnestly.
Kuroo grins, extending her hand across the table. "I'm Kuroo."
The girl smiles, taking the offered hand and shaking. "I'm Akaashi."
