Naruko has just finished giving Kanzaki the obligatory chocolate when she hears a familiar wave of squeals in the back of the hallway. Lunchtime ruckus is pretty common at Sohoku, especially on Valentine's Day. Still, that doesn't make Naruko feel any less annoyed at the horde of Imaizumi's fangirls gathering behind them.
"Some things never change," Kanzaki says as he takes a bite of Naruko's chocolate. It's kind of him, since Naruko knows Kanzaki's own desk has been filled to the brim with chocolate from admirers. "You should make your move soon, Naruko-chan." His smile is so genuine that Naruko can't even muster up the energy to be mad.
"Whatever!" Naruko says and turns on her heels. With some difficulties, she manages to squeeze herself back into the classroom to find Onoda at her desk, Onoda's nose behind her favorite shoujou manga.
Onoda gives her a wide and toothy smile. "Imaizumi-san is popular as always! Her fanclub even asked me to pass chocolates along."
"Ack!" Naruko resists the urge to pull at her own hair, if only it'll tame the bird's nest on top of her head. "Don't help them! Hotshot already has enough!"
As if speaking of the devil, Imaizumi appears in the doorway. She looks like a proper heiress with her impeccable hair and regulation-length uniform, as if she hadn't battled her way through a crowd of fans. When Imaizumi takes a seat next to them, it's with the air and grace of someone accustomed to receiving gifts from admirers. "What?" Imaizumi asks when it becomes apparent that Onoda and Naruko are both staring at her.
"Well!" Naruko huffs. "At least Kanzaki liked my chocolate! He didn't think it was burnt."
Imaizumi makes a constipated expression, which is unfair considering she's still so pretty. "I never implied your cooking was bad, you jump to conclusions yourself."
This makes Naruko pout. "I know an insult when I hear one! Whatever! You just won't get chocolate from me, then!"
"Okay," Imaizumi says quietly, which is uncharacteristic of her. There's a faint dust of pink coloring her pale cheeks, and Naruko is about to poke her more when the bell signaling the end of lunch rings.
Naruko doesn't bring it up again until the end of afternoon practice, when Kanzaki is done inspecting their bikes. Naruko is pinning a tiger hairclip into her bangs when she hears Kanzaki thank Imaizumi for her chocolate. It then dawns on Naruko that Imaizumi didn't give her any chocolate. "What gives, hotshot?!" She demands when Kanzaki leaves. "Where's my chocolate."
For some reason, this causes Imaizumi to stiffen. Her normally pristine face flushes in embarrassment, which is a feat since Naruko has seen Imaizumi ride 20 kilometers without breaking a sweat. "It's in my bag," she says at last, which prompts Naruko to go dig through Imaizumi's school bag.
Inside, Naruko finds three notebooks, extra bike gloves, some lip gloss, and a piece of chocolate wrapped in blue foil. It doesn't look like the obligatory ones Naruko saw Imaizumi give Onoda or Kanzaki. In fact, it looks homemade. "Eh," Naruko says eventually. "When were you gonna give this to me?"
Imaizumi's eyes are glued to the wall. "Never. Since you didn’t give me mine."
"That's because you insulted them!" Naruko huffs, then goes riffling through her own bag before throwing a red-wrapped piece of chocolate at Imaizumi. "Here! Have it! And it's not burnt! I worked hard making it and-" She abruptly stops talking when her brain catches up. "I mean- ah, whatever! I admit it! I gave you homemade chocolate! Laugh if you want!"
"I won't laugh," Imaizumi says quietly. She's cradling Naruko's chocolate in her hands like an expensive suspension fork and not something Naruko cooked up with her mother. "Thank you."
"So..." Naruko says awkwardly, because the silence is killing her. "What are you gonna give me for White Day?"
Imaizumi pauses, her eyes bright and determined. "There's a nice route to Kanagawa. I was thinking we could take a day trip and bike there."
"Oh," Naruko says, then grins. "We don't have to wait a month for that! Let's do it this weekend!"
"Okay," Imaizumi says easily.
"Let's ride home now?" Naruko suggests, carefully putting Imaizumi's chocolate in her bag. "We’ll race to that street lamp again?"
Imaizumi smirks, which is the first normal thing she's done all day. "I'll win."
