"I'm a tiger," Naruko tells Miki when he's seated in her bathtub, knees drawn to his chest while she meticulously works the shampoo through his hair. "One day I will grow into a tiger, and then you'll all be sorry."
"Okay," Miki says pleasantly and curls her fingers on the patch of skin behind his ears. She laughs when Naruko purrs and doesn't complain when his tail splashes water out of the tub and onto her apron.
"Just because you're nice to me doesn't mean I'm going to stay," Naruko warns her. "I'm going to leave. I'm a tiger." He carries himself like a haughty purebred cat, and not like the stray that Miki had rescued from behind the bike shop three months ago. Naruko has been saying the same thing since his first day here, and back then Miki had set a pouch of food and supplies in the coat closet in case Naruko really did want to leave in the middle of the night. Naruko never did, and eventually Imaizumi discovered the snacks inside and ate them with Naruko.
"Why do you always fight with Imaizumi-kun?" Miki asks as she turns on the shower nozzle. It washes the soap suds out of Naruko's hair and flattens his bangs to his face.
Naruko shakes water out of his face vigorously. "He's a party pooper and doesn't want to play with me."
"Imaizumi-kun is a rabbit," Miki reminds him as she attacks his hair with a towel. "He's not as high energy as you, Naruko-kun. He doesn't like to be surprised and sometimes he wants to be alone. That doesn't mean Imaizumi-kun doesn't like you."
Naruko sinks into the water. "But now he really doesn't."
"Maybe if you apologized," Miki suggests. She had come home from work today to find Imaizumi and Naruko in a heated argument over the concept of personal space after Naruko tried to groom Imaizumi. It had escalated until Naruko knocked the potted plant off the counter and Imaizumi, who normally would have helped Naruko clean up the mess before Miki came home, hopped away and locked himself in Miki's room.
"Maybe," Naruko says and blows bubbles under the water.
Later, when Miki has gone across the hall to visit her neighbor Ishigaki and their crazy lizard, Naruko breaks into Miki's room. He finds Imaizumi snoring softly on Miki's bed, and jumps up as quietly as possible. As a safety measure, he brings his favorite chew toy along and curls up around Imaizumi's back. Naruko resists the urge to swat at Imaizumi's soft tail. Since Miki's pillows are so fluffy, he falls asleep almost immediately.
Imaizumi is gone when Naruko wakes up to the sound of Miki making dinner. Yet, when he enters the living room and stretches across the floor, Naruko finds Imaizumi sitting on the couch with Naruko's chew toy, like a consolation of sorts.
Minor victories. Naruko grins to himself. Tigers always win.
