JJ is so sensitive, and I couldn't help but take that and run with it. It's such a minor detail in episode 10, but he does invite Otabek out to eat with him and Isabella, and I always personally saw that as proof that he really did try to make friends in the skating world. I get kind of mad at how abrasive everyone else is to him in canon, lol. I'm glad you like this!
