Momoi is hiding behind the corridors, expertly spying on Kuroko when she feels someone squat down next to her. "What are you doing?" She hisses at Kise, who just blinks back at her.
"What are we play, Momocchi?"
We're playing, when will Tetsu-kun notice me Momoi doesn't say. She instinctively cradles the stack of papers in her arms. Nagata-sensei had asked her to deliver these to Kuroko's classroom, and Momoi had gladly accepted this task of the utmost importance. Now, she's squatting behind a screen door while watching Kuroko speak quietly with-
"Ah! Akashicchi!" Kise starts to stand up, but yelps when Momoi tugs him down. He pouts. "This is no way to treat your senpai, Momocchi!"
"We're in the same year, Ki-chan." Momoi swats absently at his sweater. Kuroko is currently handing Akashi, student council president and prince charming of Teiko, a large manila envelope. Could it be a love letter?
Kise lets out a quiet huff. "Your mangaka-senpai, then!" Kise says as if he's the main artist of Let's Play Basketball!, a popular BL manga about an underdog high school basketball team, instead of someone who shows up once a week to ink flowery backgrounds.
Up ahead, Akashi is accepting the envelope with a graceful smile. This makes Momoi nervous. Akashi reminds her of one of the main characters of Let's Play Basketball. Given that Kuroko has openly admitted that he based the airhead character off Kise, it's not too far of a stretch to say he'd do the same for Akashi. Curses, Momoi thinks as she bites her lips. In the two months she's spent inking for Kuroko, she'd yet to ascertain if his personal preferences aligned with the subject of his manga. All Momoi had been able to confirm was that (1) Kuroko was much more domestic than her; (2) Paper grain quality mattered more than she thought; and (3) Kise could not be trusted to keep a secret. She's not even surprised when Kise, annoyed by the lack of attention Momoi gives him, jumps up and starts waving at Kuroko.
"Kurokocchi! Akashicchi! Are you hanging out without me?" He's up and out of her arm span before Momoi can stop him.
Reluctantly, Momoi stands up and follows.
"Hello," Akashi says pleasantly when Momoi joins.
Kise loops his arm around Kuroko. "What were you talking about?"
"Nothing in particular," Akashi says, which is pretty suspicious.
Kuroko just shrugs, the beginning of a smile evident on his lips. "I was wondering when Momoi-san would come join our conversation."
Momoi flushes. "You noticed?"
"I always notice you," Kuroko says easily, making Momoi's heart somersault in her rib cage. It's obvious he doesn't mean anything deeper by the compliment, but moments like this still makes Momoi disproportionately happy.
A small part of Momoi wishes, desperately, for Kuroko to actually be interested in Akashi. It would make her blatant crush easier to brush off, to laugh over. Instead, she finds herself looking at her hands, then blinking. "Ah! I need to give this to Tanaka-sensei."
"I'll help," Kuroko offers, extracting himself from Kise's arms. He walks Momoi to his classroom, then spends the rest of lunch period chatting with her about pen stroke techniques. When the bell signaling the end of lunch rings, Kuroko gives her a faint smile and says, "See you later."
This is enough, Momoi tells herself adamantly. Having Kuroko treat her like an equal, cook for her during their marathon editing sessions, and share jokes with her is enough. Momoi brings both palms to her cheeks. This is enough.
