LINN how could I pass this one up. You brought this on yourself, but if it helps, you can consider it a prequel to the other one ;D

***

Just before he started his third year of high school, Morisuke and his mother went to the zoo. He remembered the way she had paused while they watched the elephants being fed, and looked at him which such a sad expression that he'd been momentarily convinced she was dying. But then she'd just laughed, and taken his hand, and told him to make the most of his last year of school.

"It'll go by so quickly," she said, squeezing his fingers so tightly it hurt. "Make the most of it. Don't leave anything you'll regret."

Morisuke had laughed, and promised, and then there had been training camp, and the qualifiers, the week laid up in bed while he rested his ankle, an awkward Christmas eve date with a girl in his class, Nationals. Before he knew it, they were graduating, and there was nothing to do but wave goodbye to Kai and Kuroo, and promise to meet up before Yaku moved away to university.

Plans kept falling through for nearly a month; one of them would be busy, or something would come up, but eventually they managed to keep their word. They visited Nekoma, and watched a practice match with Karasuno, but going back so soon made them feel awkward and unwanted, and Morisuke could tell that Kuroo especially was unsettled by the experience. He pulled Kuroo aside after Kai had caught the train, and dragged him to a nearby cafe.

"You're sulking."

"You don't know that."

Yaku kicked him under the table.

"Ouch! Why is there no love in your heart, Yakkun?"

Eventually, when they were done tormenting one another, Kuroo sighed and began to talk. About school, and the team, and everyone being so far away.

"You're not even moving," Morisuke said, kicking him again gently. "You can see Kenma and the others anytime you want."

"Kai's going to Osaka," Kuroo said, looking out of the window. "And you--"

Morisuke sighed. Kyoto was far, but it wasn't that far. "I'm not going to the moon," he said crossly.

Kuroo laughed. "It feels like that."

Maybe it was because Morisuke knew he would secretly miss Kuroo, or maybe they were both trying to assuage each other's anxieties about leaving school, but they spent almost every day together after that. Morisuke remembered his mother's words.

Don't leave anything you'll regret

Two nights before Morisuke was due to leave, he and Kuroo lay on the roof of Kuroo's apartment building, staring up at the heavy sky.

"I can't believe you're going so soon," Kuroo said.

Morisuke hummed. "I have to give you something."

Kuroo turned to him, his grin vivid in the darkness. "A souvenir?"

"Something like that," Morisuke said, and then he leaned over and kissed him.

It didn't last very long. After a few seconds, Kuroo began to kiss him back, and moved his hand up to cover Morisuke's fingers on his chest. Then they both pulled away, and blinked at one another, neither wanting to speak first.

"So that's it," Morisuke said at last, rolling onto his back again. "That's all it was."

Kuroo touched his own mouth with his fingertips. "Was that a statement," he said at last, his voice very soft. "Or a question?"

Morisuke's face burned. He looked away. "Neither. Both."

"You're leaving."

"Yeah."

Kuroo was quiet for a long time. "I kinda feel like you already answered your own question," he said at last.

Morisuke felt suddenly hollow. "Okay," he said. After a moment, he pushed himself to his feet. "Fine. Then I'll see you around."

"Yakkun."

Morisuke sighed, but didn't turn around. "Yeah?"

"I'll miss you."
