Title: His tears.

***

Against everything Yuushi had ever read on his favorite novels it was not raining during this funeral. People were not completely silent, there were no black umbrellas or shy tears. Even he being closely acquainted with the family for a long time, there were many people there he did not know and a small group of familiar faces from his middle-school but he knew they had lost touch with most of them. They had lost touch with each other also but Yuuta’s treatment made them reconnect and everything else after that.

Syusuke strengthened the hold on his hand when Yumiko, started crying once more, he held his lover’s hand while his brain tried to come up with something to say but nothing went out. Syusuke let go of his hand and hugged Yumiko, letting her cry on his shoulder, his expression a complete blank. Yuushi did not remember when was the last time he saw Syusuke smile, maybe it was a few months after they had re encountered, in the corridors of the hospital he worked. Him going to the Neurosurgery area and Syusuke returning from accompanying his brother to oncology. There was a bright smile on that day, a smile that made him invite his old rival out.

Some old face from Hyotei, maybe Shishido, maybe Jirou, touched his shoulder in a pitiful attempt at a goodbye, he just nodded, while his attention was still focused on Syusuke, on Yumiko’s cries and on the grave in front of them.

One by one the guests were leaving, those louder ones he did not know left at start, now only close family left, each of them hugged Syusuke and Yumiko, some shook his hand but most ignored his presence there. Yumiko stopped crying, she had dried all her tears by now, she left with an excuse of having something to pick up on the car. Yuushi knew she just wanted to cry even more but on a place without their gazes on her.

When she left, Syusuke took his hand once more but still did not look at him.

“If there was a way…” Syusuke’s voice was out in a whisper.

“There was no way, everyone and, specially, you, tried everything they could.” Yuushi tried to assure himself while he assured the man he loved.

Syusuke did not speak again until they reached their apartment. The first tears Yuushi saw where cried on that same night, when he hugged Syusuke. The last thing he remembered was falling asleep hugging his lover, his eyes also wet in tears.
