That last line is SO BRILLIANT. It just reflects so perfectly what Yanagi went through and how much it tortured him to see the results so clearly but be unable to do anything about it. The way you detailed Yanagi's slow descent into despair keeps pace with the team as well - there's this looming, crushing sense of dread that just weighs down the reader as well as Yanagi.
