“What? What makes you ask that? I don’t even like him.”
Daichi blinks as Oikawa practically lifts his nose in the air and walks back to the kitchen to get another drink, then turns back to Kageyama, who looks distinctly… flustered. All he’d done was ask how their relationship was going. He hadn’t thought it would be such a big deal.
“Is everything okay?” he asks, frowning lightly, and Kageyama just flushes harder, looking past Daichi’s shoulder and not meeting his eyes.
“It’s fine, Daichi-san. Just…” He shrugs and gestures helplessly all in one awkward movement. “Oikawa-san. You know.”
Daichi glances over his shoulder, takes in the sight of Oikawa leaning over the counter to talk to Kuroo as he pours them both a drink. “Yeah, I know Oikawa-san,” he says slowly. “That’s why I’m asking if everything is okay.”
“It’s fine. He just… he’s like that.” Kageyama looks close to combusting. He hides his face behind his cup as he takes a longer-than-necessary drink of beer. Daichi doesn’t try to prod him to speak until he’s ready. “I knew what I was getting into.”
“As long as you’re sure,” Daichi says, though he still feels undeniably doubtful about the whole thing. It’s not that he doesn’t think Kageyama to make the right decisions, and it’s not that he doesn’t like Oikawa as a person. But, well… it’s hard to think of them dating, really. Daichi’s not sure how exactly they fit together. And while it isn’t necessary for him to know all the details, he does want to know that Kageyama is happy, at the very least.
Daichi is interrupted from his thoughts by Kageyama pushing his cup into his chest. “I’m sure,” he says, with a confidence he’s seemingly pulled out of thin air. He waits for Daichi to take his cup before pushing through the crowd, and Daichi frowns, eyes following him.
It doesn’t take him long to see where Kageyama ends up - across from Oikawa, in a small group of people who’ve started dancing to the music playing from one of their phones. Even from across the room, Daichi can see how brightly Oikawa smiles when he sees Kageyama, how tightly he loops an arm around his waist and pulls him in close. It’s completely at odds with what Oikawa had said before - but that was Daichi’s fault, probably, for assuming that what Oikawa said would ever match what Oikawa did.
Daichi sighs, then finishes off Kageyama’s drink. He still definitely doesn’t get it. But as long as the two of them know what they’re doing, he’s fine not getting involved. Especially now that their dancing is taking a turn that Daichi isn’t drunk enough to witness yet.
