No warnings, just Hinata being a little petty/obsessive. Thanks so much for the chance to write my dark horse pair!

The Olympic medal looks oversized in his hand when he thrusts it triumphantly into the air. On the podium itself, wide smile spread from cheek to cheek, Hinata jumps into the air. The sun glints off the medal and the Olympic torch is positioned just right that its flames look like a continuation of Hinata’s hair.

The picture makes the cover of Newsweek with the headline: THE TINY GIANT OF JAPAN.

Everyone who knows or knew Hinata buys a copy; Hinata’s Facebook feed is flooded with photos of the cover next to photos of Hinata and them,

The only person who doesn’t do that is Ushijima. Hinata wonders if he’s even seen the interview.

R: “As the whole world knows, you’re only 166 cm. That’s very short for a volleyball player! What inspired you to get into volleyball?”

SH: “When I was a kid, I saw a volleyball match on TV when I was passing by. There was this kid, a teenager, jumping. He wasn’t much taller than me but when he jumped, it looked like he was flying. I thought if he could do it, maybe I could learn too!”

R: “And that led you to the Olympics?”

SH: “Not on its own. I met a lot of people along the way who encouraged and discouraged me. My setter, Kageyama-kun, he believed in me and I believed in him. We make a good team because we’ve been together since high school. And Oikawa-kun, he’s also very good. He was one of the first people to pay us the respect of taking us seriously as opponents. And Bokuto-kun too!”

R: “So who was it that discouraged you?”

SH: “Ah, well.” he laughs nervously. “A lot of people teased me for being short. But the worst was this one guy, Ushijima Wakatoshi. He was the ace of his school, Shirtoriwaza, and he acted like we didn’t have a chance against him. Said we were concrete and stuff. I got so mad, I jumped right up and stole a ball from him at his own school.”

R: “You stole a ball?!”

SH: “No, no, not really stole. I jumped higher than him and hit it. I didn’t take it home or anything!”

R: “Ah. It must’ve surprised him to see you in the Olympics!”

SH: “...No, I don’t think so.”

R: “No?”

SH: “I wrote to him when I made it onto the Olympics team.”

R: “What- why?!”

SH: “Well, he just made me so angry back then! I still get angry thinking about it. I wanted him to know that I’d succeeded!”

R: “...Did he ever reply?”

SH: “Yes. He sent me a good luck card.”

Maybe, Hinata thinks, he’ll hand-deliver a copy of the magazine to Ushijima.
