They graduate on a clear, sunny day where the buzz of excitement mixes in the air with the uncertainty of the future and the wistfulness for the time that has passed.
Three whole years, Issei thinks to himself, and it feels like all he has to show for it is the graduation diploma in his hands and the soft but painful burn in his chest as he looks at Takahiro, unsure if he's missed his chance or if he's staring at it right now and just can't see it for what it is.
"Hey," Takahiro murmurs with a half smile, pulling Issei out of his thoughts and back into the present.
Enjoy the moment, Issei thinks to himself. He isn't getting this one again, for better or worse. He's only going to have the one chance to do something about it.
"Hey yourself," he replies, and he taps his diploma tube against Takahiro's shoulder, once, twice, until Takahiro lifts his up and knocks it away.
"What is this, a sword fight?" Takahiro asks, a slow grin creeping across his lips.
"Could be," Issei replies. He takes a breath. "Could be something else."
"Yeah," Takahiro agrees, low and considering. "This really could be, huh?"
Issei leaves it at that, giving Takahiro a lazy grin. "So hey, anyway, congratulations on graduating, or whatever. See you at our first semester of university?"
"Maybe before then, if you're lucky," Takahiro replies with a wink that's completely over the top, but Issei gets it. He gets that Takahiro is afraid right now, when he is too. He gets that this sort of thing needs time, that they've had three years and they still need a little longer. That's completely fine. Issei has always thought of himself as a particularly patient, thoughtful person. There's no need for that to change now, even if he's almost in reach of what he wants.
Takahiro is the one who starts inventing excuses for them to spend time with each other. So we don't go into shock and die because we're too used to seeing each other every single day, is laughably transparent, but Issei's been running out of good excuses too. He'll take this one.
They start off in a busier part of town, before wandering off into the quieter streets, where they can just mumble their conversation to each other and they understand, half by hearing and half by knowing each other well enough.
"So, hey," Takahiro says, as he and Issei climb an old fence, into a playground that's been shut for months.
"Yeah?" Issei knows where this is going. They reach for each other's hands, but he asks anyway.
Takahiro doesn't give him an answer, but gives him a kiss. All things considered, it's even better.
