People think of contagion as a one-way thing. They think of a sick person infecting a well person. They think of poisonous ideas and falsehoods spreading.

What they fail to remember is that it works both ways.

Antigens and antibodies can be spread. So can the truth. So can new scientific discoveries.

Contagion doesn’t always have to be a bad thing.

But Midousuji is convinced that it’s awful.

Ishigaki’s just another mass-produced little soldier, another minion to move as he wants. He was the ace but wasn’t strong enough to hold the position so captain or not, Midousuji won’t listen to him.

He won’t.

Ishigaki can make all the pretty speeches he wants but all he achieves is making Midousuji sick at the sentiment of them.

He feels awful whenever Ishigaki starts talking, bored contempt far too quickly giving way to irritation. He doesn’t need to be saved! He doesn’t want to be saved!

What’s the point of it anyway? For Ishigaki to be able to pat himself on the back about what a good person he is to redeem someone like Midousuji?

Midousuji’s desires won’t hurt him. He’s been chasing them all his life.

And he won’t let Ishigaki make him so soft that he’s capable of being hurt either.

(Ishigaki’s the first person to comment positively on his looks since his mother died. It’s Ishigaki’s fault that now Midousuji sometimes looks in the mirror when he’s showering after practice, it’s all Ishigaki’s fault that Midousuji looks at him to see if he still thinks Midousuji is beautiful even after his change in hairstyle.

Ishigaki’s opinion shouldn’t matter to him and yet…)

They call it lovesickness and it's the first time that Midousuji's ever agreed so much with the common people. Yes, this is a sickness, this is an illness most dire. There's no other way to describe this ugly, awkward sensation that only Ishigaki can cure even though he's the cause of it.

There's no vaccine against it and no treatment either. Midousuji's infected and he'd rather cut his own heart out than love Ishigaki with it but in the end, he has no choice but to let his traitorous heart do as it wills.

He treats Ishigaki with as much contempt as he can. If he can't fall out of love on his own, maybe he can goad Ishigaki into being so cruel that Midousuji stops loving him.

(It doesn't work. It doesn't work and then Ishigaki leaves, like Midousuji always knew it would, and it hurts so much that Midousuji wonders how he survived such a loss the first time.)
