I've got a hunger twisting my stomach into knots that my tongue has tied off.

The locker room is always a mess of sweat and stink and shouts, and Daichi thinks it's never been louder than this year. Kageyama and Hinata are unmutable, and they rile up Tanaka and Nishinoya, and those two in turn get Ennoshita going, and rope Yamaguchi into it, and by the time the rest of the team is laughing and egging them on (or scowling, in Tsukishima's case), ten minutes on either end of practice has been eaten up in the tsunami of nonsense.

Early on, Suga suggests they move practice up a half hour to compensate. Daichi agrees.

Daichi wouldn't go so far to say Suga always has good suggestions, but nearly everything he puts on the table not having to do with spicy food or karaoke has been well thought-out, well-planned, something worth stopping over to implement. Suga's reliable like that. Crazy, but methodical. Suga pays attention. Nearly everything's got basis in some fact. Daichi doesn't know what he'd do without him. Probably quit volleyball a long time ago, or saw it sour.

"Christmas Eve is coming up," Suga says, after Hinata's bounded out of the club room, boisterous bunch in tow. "Got any plans?"

"Ah, ha, not really," Asahi says, scratching the back of his neck. "I, ah, I don't -- well."

Daichi and Suga look at each other, grin, and turn back to Asahi. "Nishinoya?" Daichi asks.

Asahi turns three shades of red. "I -- I gotta go."

Suga and Daichi laugh, but Asahi's laughing with them, a little, just enough. Asahi waves over his shoulder and then there were two.

"And you?" Suga asks, turning to Daichi. Daichi notices how close they are and take a breath to keep himself in place. "Got any Christmas Eve plans?"

Not yet, his heart says. Not yet, but do you want--

"No," Daichi says, quietly.

Suga's not impossible to read. He's not transparent, but Daichi has known him three years now; shared heartaches and victories and late-night training camp sugar-high insomnias. Daichi knows what Suga's eyes look like when they light up with hope.

"I'm going to see them light the star on the tree downtown," Suga says, voice carefully light, a careful distance from Daichi, a careful measured event, with a careful measured offer: "You could come."

I could, Daichi thinks. I want to, let's make it a date--

"Thanks, but I might just get an early night."

Suga nods, and Daichi has known him three years now; it doesn't matter that he smiles and picks up his bag and walks out with Daichi. Daichi knows what Suga's eyes look like when he's disappointed.
