Everything feels a little colder once Tatsuya leaves.

In actual fact, the seasons are changing and summer is settling into suburban Los Angeles like a heavy blanket of dry heat. Shuuzou knows that it's all in his head, but he still can't help the way his entire life feels different, just for the fact that he's spent all of this time with Tatsuya only to see him leave again.

He tries to tell himself that it's just the stress of worrying about his father's health, when he no longer has anything to distract himself with, but he knows that's not the case. He knows that it's because he misses Tatsuya, and it has him lying awake at night, too restless, feeling a little too empty to be able to sleep. He hates the feeling of it, the sudden emptiness in his chest, the way he finds his mind wandering to Tatsuya and where in Japan he might have gone, which school he might be attending, which of Shuuzou's old teammates he might come across, because there's no way of going to Japan and loving basketball as much as Tatsuya does before coming up against the Generation of Miracles, either as a teammate or an opponent.

He wonders how Tatsuya would match up against each and every single one of them, from either side of the court, and he finds that he can't dwell on it for too long without feeling jealous of the thought that they could be playing basketball with Tatsuya while Shuuzou is stuck an ocean away, in the worst possible timezone to even organise Skype video calls. He doesn't want to think of anyone playing on the same court as Tatsuya while he can't, and especially not when it's someone he knows so well that he can just shut his eyes and play out how the situation would go in his mind.

It's tempting, in his lonelier moments, to do it anyway. At least that way, he can think about Tatsuya in a little more detail, rather than just having to deal with this general feeling of missing him without actually being able to do anything about it.

There are other people playing on the street ball court that they spent most of their time on, during their time together. Shuuzou knows them all, knows that they know Tatsuya too. There are members of Tatsuya's gang that Shuuzou recognises, the ones that Tatsuya nodded to and told him, let them know if you need anything. I've told them to take care of you, in that mysterious and dangerous way of his that Shuuzou loves just as much as he loves the smooth, talented player he is on the court.

With a sigh, he steps up to the sidelines, next to the rest of the team that he used to play street ball with. They're yet to decide on a permanent replacement for Tatsuya, cycling through some promising players until they settle on one.

Shuuzou doesn't mind. For now, he'll play with Tatsuya's memory lingering on the court. It's not enough, but it will have to do.
