"Oniichan," Natsu said, poking her head around the door to Shouyou's room. She was biting her lip, her large eyes looking positively enormous as she stared. She twisted the fabric of her sleeve nervously.
"What's wrong, Natsu?" Shouyou asked. He set down his volleyball magazine and sat up on his bed.
Natsu stepped into his room, wrung her hands, and asked, "Did you get hit in the head?"
That was certainly not what he'd expected.
"What?" he asked. "What do you mean?"
"Did you get hit in the head with a volleyball during practice?"
"No, why?"
"Well," Natsu said, "you've been acting really weird lately. I was worried you were going crazy."
"...How have I been acting weird?" Shouyou asked hesitantly. He got off his bed and sat on the floor next to the mattress, gesturing for Natsu to come closer.
"You smile really weird sometimes, even when nothing funny happened," Natsu said. "And you keep running into things, but that might be because you're on your phone all the time? And you keep talking really loud in your sleep—I can hear it from my bedroom sometimes."
Shouyou blushed. Oh. So that's what this was about.
He and Kageyama had started dating two weeks ago. Ever since then, they'd been messaging each other almost non-stop—a minor miracle, considering how awful Kageyama had been before about keeping up with communication. He hadn't thought he'd changed his behavior enough that people would start to notice, but he guessed he was wrong.
"Um, you don't have to worry about anything, Natsu," Shouyou said. "I'm fine! I promise. I didn't get hit in the head."
"Okay..." Natsu said, but she didn't look satisfied. She twisted her sleeve again. "...Did you and Kageyama-san get into a fight?"
"Huh?" Shouyou said. "Why would you think that?"
"You used to talk about him all the time, but now you change the subject whenever I ask about him."
"Oh."
Damn, his little sister was really observant.
Natsu's eyes started to fill with tears, taking his silence for an affirmative answer. "I knew it," she said. "Does this mean he won't come over to the house anymore? What if I invite him over? Would he come, even if you two are fighting?"
"Oh, no, no, don't worry—we're not fighting," Shouyou clarified quickly. "Um, yeah. We're, um. We're definitely not fighting."
Natsu tilted her head, staring at him again with those huge brown eyes. Crap... He'd never been able to deny her anything.
"Can you keep a secret, Natsu?" he asked her. She nodded her tiny head seriously. "Um, so.... The reason I haven't been talking about Tobio—um, I mean Kageyama-san as much is because, well, um. You know what girlfriends and boyfriends are, right?"
Natsu smiled. "Of course I know, silly!"
"Well...." Shouyou took a breath. "Kageyama-san is my boyfriend now."
If Natsu's eyes had been wide before, they were almost comically huge now. "Really?" she said, clappnig her hands excitedly. "Does that he'll come over more often? Can I call him oniichan now?"
"Sure, if you want," Shouyou laughed. "But, um, don't tell mom and dad yet, okay? I need to tell them on my own."
Natsu mimed zipping her lips and throwing away the key. "I won't tell anyone! I promise."
"Thanks, Natsu," he said. He pulled her into a small hug.
"Kageyama-san makes you really happy," Natsu said. "So that makes me really happy."
"I'm really happy, too," Shouyou replied. He meant it.
Who would have thought that coming out would be so easy?
