Deliberate sports injury, Kirisaki Daiichi vs Touou. Aka when your boyfriend is on a team known for crippling opponents and you have to keep your team safe. Thank you for prompting this!

***

Everything Imayoshi knows about Hanamiya (and therefore, Kirisaki Daiichi), he tells his team before their match against the other school. He drags them into the meeting room - even Aomine - and says, “Listen to me. This match will be harder than any other. We won’t be playing to win. We’ll be playing to get out intact.”

Sakurai’s eyes widen and his shoulders scrunch in. Wakamatsu jerks his head up, hands curling into fists. Aomine just looks bored, as usual, but Momoi’s eyes are sharply focused. If she’s listening, Aomine doesn’t need to.

The others are all paying keen attention; when Imayoshi switches on the compilation tape of Kirisaki’s games, the air soon fills with muttered oaths and sounds of dismay.

This is what Imayoshi tells them.

1) Hanamiya will target Aomine. He’s the genius of the team and he’s the one Hanamiya will most want to destroy.
2) Hanamiya doesn’t care about winning. He’ll go after injuries more than victory.
3) Play on the side closest to the referee. If you have to, stick right next to the boundary line. Don’t let anyone get between you and the referee, no matter what.
4) Don’t go for a shot unless you’re sure you can make it. They’ll get the rebounds because no matter what, nobody’s going to be fighting on the inside. That’s where careers are crushed.
5) There is no point winning this one game if you get too crippled to play the rest of the season. Play it safe.

The last order he only gives when Aomine has wandered off.

6) At all costs, protect Aomine.

Aomine doesn’t appreciate being treated like some frail little baby by his own team. Ten minutes into the game and he’s outpacing his teammates, dribbling without passing and scoring shots on his own. They’re all doing their best to cover for him, to protect him, but nobody can keep up.

The Kirisaki boys can’t even get close enough to touch him but Imayoshi knows better than to assume Hanamiya’s given up.

While everyone’s watching Aomine, Sakurai falls and twists his ankle. No more three-pointers from him though with Aomine dominating the game, it’s not as if Sakurai is necessary. Sakurai pouts from the bench while his ankle is iced, watching the glory.

“Three,” Hanamiya says right before he steals the ball.

Wakamatsu slugs one of the opposing players. The referee doesn’t even wait to hear what the provocation was; Wakamatsu’s ordered off the court for the remainder of the game. He slams the door when he leaves for the locker room.

Hanamiy whispers, “Two,” at Imayoshi the next time they pass each other.

Susa hits the floor so hard when he’s shoved in passing that something twists in his shoulder. With his arm rendered useless, Imayoshi’s forced to take on another substitute. He’s briefed the substitutes as well on Kirisaki Daiichi’s tactics but they don’t have the same synergy the regulars have.

“One.” Hanamiya grins at Imayoshi and then jostles him lightly, far too lightly to be another but the equivalent of a love bite.

*

Hanamiya always counts down - three, two, one, BOOM - and Imayoshi knows taking Aomine down will be the grand finale.

Imayoshi’s the only person on the court who’s safe and even as his mind works to find a away to protect Aomine, he wonders how Hanamiya justified it to his team that they had to leave Imayoshi alone.

*

They were never meant to be on the opposite sides of the battlefield.
